Saturday Evening: 5:00 PM Sunday:10:00AM, 12:00PM 1st Sunday 8:00 AM Italian/English Mass Monday-Saturday: 9:00 AM in the Chapel Holy Days of Obligation: Mass times will be listed in the bulletin on the Sunday prior to the holy day.

CELEBRATION OF SACRAMENTS

BAPTISM: Communal celebrations of Baptism take place on the first and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. To arrange a Bap-tism, please call the Rectory. A Baptismal Instruction Session is required before the Baptism. Because Godparents play an im-portant role in the child’s Christian life and education, Godpar-ents must be practicing Catholics who have been confirmed, are at least 16 years of age and, if married, must be in a mar-riage recognized by the Catholic Church. If there is a question about the suitability of someone to be a Godparent, please call the Rectory before asking the person to be a Godparent. RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance takes place on Saturdays from 4:00 to 4:45 PM. At other times, the person should make the request directly to a priest. MARRIAGE: Engaged couples should contact the Rectory at least six months in advance. Diocesan regulations require a marriage preparation program for all couples. MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: If a parishion-er is in the hospital or homebound, please contact the Rectory. Arrangements can be made for the person to receive the Sac-rament of the Anointing of the Sick. Also, Holy Communion can be brought to our homebound parishioners.

KEEPING UP WITH EXPENSES The parish effort to closely manage day to day expens-es continues. However, expenses such as utilities, prop-erty insurance and our archdiocesan assessment for central services (in some months totaling as much as $15,000) put a strain on our ability to keep current with all expenses. Our objective is to achieve that goal with-out any assistance from the Archdiocese. The continued generosity of every parishioner and increased giving whenever possible will make that possible. Thank you for your continued support.

PARISHIONER REGISTRATION Parishioner registration is important to the parish as well as the parishioner. All parishioners are encouraged to register. Once you have registered and continue to par-ticipate by attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist regularly; you will find it helpful for the enrollment of children in the Religious Education Program, and to obtain the necessary documents to become a Godpar-ent or a sponsor for Confirmation. If you would like to register please stop by the rectory during regular business hours. Monday thru Friday 9am to 4pm. If you are presently receiving envelopes and would like them discontinued please call the rectory and we will assist you. (845-561-2264)

Sponsors for Baptism/Confirmation Serving as a Sponsor is a great honor and serious re-sponsibility in the Church. Sponsors are liturgical minis-ters who promise to support the candidate and be a good example of living the Catholic Faith. For this rea-son the Church has certain requirements that have to be addressed before one can be considered a Sponsor. A Sponsor is expected to be attending Mass on Sun-days and Holy Days of Obligation, be at least 16 years of age, Baptized and Confirmed in the Catholic Church, not a parent of the candidate and if married, validly mar-ried, in the Church and if not married not living with someone as if married. Sponsor Certificates will be granted only to people who can satisfy these require-ments.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From the early medieval period, it was expected that the many bishops of Italy travel to Rome at least once every three years to give a report of their ministry, with a footnote granting the bishops of Sicily a visit every five years. By the eleventh century, the idea of bishops visit-ing the tombs of the apostles was a very strict require-ment for all within reasonable reach of Rome. The age of discovery and the expansion of the Church into remote corners of the earth made this an unreasonable burden in many cases, yet every bishop was required at least to send a representative to Rome every five years. In 1911, Pope St. Pius X established the rule for a “quinquennial” (meaning “once in five years”) report, called an ad limina. This literally means “to the threshhold,” and refers to the expectation that the visiting bishop will go to the thresholds of the tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul and to a personal audience with the Holy Father. An ex-emption was given to so-called “mission territories,” which in 1911 included the United States. The reports were still required, but could be filed by letter with an office of the missions called “Propagation of the Faith.” This status was changed in 1917 and since that time all American bishops have been subject to the ad limina. These reports, careful-ly kept in the Vatican archives, are a treasure trove for historians, providing snapshots of culture and faith and a record of the Church’s resilience even in times of persecu-tion and change.

DEPENDING ON GOD “Getting by with a little help from our friends” is not an idea that began with the Beatles. Certainly the idea of “getting by with a little help from God” goes back at least to the first reading today from Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to this weekend’s scriptures. No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had given him, he persevered—even though he needed help from the people around him. The Israelites especially depended on God for freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and destitute, had no one to de-pend on, but still she would not give up. She could not afford to bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into weariness until finally he met her demands. We sometimes need to turn to others to help us through difficult times; but if we always turn to God, we won’t be disappointed, for our help, the psalm assures us, is from the Lord.
