Weekly Calendar & Liturgies
Jesus said: A little while and you will see me no longer; And again, a little while and you will see me”.
Jesus spoke these words in John’s Gospel during his long discourse to his disciples before his crucifixion and death tell-ing them that he was about to leave them but that he would return.
I am using his words though in a very different context to remind you of my own upcoming departure for a time. When Archbishop Sartain called to ask me to come to Sacred Heart I had already made plans to be in Europe for an ex-tended period of time; he said he didn’t want me to change my travel plans but asked if I would still come here as parish priest and I agreed to do so. This has been a delightful beginning for me and in some ways I wish I were not leaving so soon for an extended time away. But flight reservations are much more difficult to change these days—even with Alaska air!
I have 45 people going to Ireland for the visit of Pope Francis for the International Forum of Families. He will celebrate the closing Mass for the expected 700,000 pilgrims on Sunday August 26 in Dublin. I will leave this Monday morning several days ahead of the group and I will celebrate the Mass for the Feast of the Assumption in the little church in my home parish in Limerick County on Wed August 15. It will be a Mass of Remembrance for my parents Terence and Margaret Madigan along with my family members—2 brothers and a sister and their families who live in Ireland. (My dad died in 1979, aged 69, and my mom died just four years ago aged 94.) I will welcome the group of pilgrims the following Sunday for their first Mass in Ireland following their arrival on that Sunday morning.
My home parish of St. John The Baptist is a small parish and with the drop off in attendance over the past num-ber of years they no longer have a resident priest which has made them very anxious about the survival of the parish. A priest comes in from a neighboring parish to celebrate a reduced schedule of Masses each week. In my growing up years we would have never imagined this happening when even the smallest parish had its own priest. They live with the wor-ry that the parish might be closed forcing them to have to go to a larger neighboring parish something that we are experi-encing in many parts of the Catholic world. During a visit home a couple of years ago family and friends began asking if I would ever consider returning to my homeland to help in the midst of this scarcity of priests and as politely as I could I declined. I have been gone from Ireland, and a priest in this Archdiocese, for over 44 years and I would find it very hard to return to live; it is a very different country to the one I left and many friends I knew have died. Besides I get much more life from the celebration of Mass here with the involvement of Catholics along with the music and singing than I do from the rushed pace of Mass in Ireland. Furthermore, I have my plot reserved in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kent!!
When the pilgrimage group returns to the US, I will remain on with family to visit and do some hiking as well as some hiking in Spain. The summer weather in Ireland left much to be desired for many years with lots of rain and many locals began to go to countries like Spain and Portugal to get sun in this era of cheaper and accessible flights. My family were among those who found less expensive places to go to “dry out” from the rain—probably after too much alcohol also! However, as you may have read, the climates in these countries have been undergoing significant change and Ire-land has had a long spell of very dry and hot weather which had been well nigh unbearable for the locals who have been complaining about the lack of rain and the sun being too hot—they have been promising God that they will never com-plain about rain again!! Remember what I said last Sunday in my homily about complaining: I’m betting that their prom-ise about not complaining will only last until the end of the first week of rain! I will fly back to Seattle on Oct 2.
While I am gone you will have Fr. Bill Watson, SJ for the 9 am and 7 pm Masses this Wednesday Aug. 15 for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Fr. Akor from Nigeria will arrive next Saturday Aug. 18. You will also have a cou-ple of weekend visits from Bishop Muggenborg on Sunday Aug. 19 and on Sept. 22/23. Deacon Sam, in his Pastoral Coordinator role, will continue to manage the day-to-day affairs of the parish to ensure that things go forward as smooth-ly as possible. Fr. Ritter is complaining that when he would go away they never sent a Bishop to cover for him!!
Jesus left the Apostles after the Resurrection saying that he would return in a little while; it’s been a long time waiting for his second coming—not that we are in any rush since it would mean the end of the world. My time away is to be much shorter! I look forward to seeing you again to resume our faith journey together. I will pray for you and I ask you to pray for me. Fr. John.
Malarkey from Fr. John!

WHAT IS A SACRISTAN?
In parish life, one of the roles that is rarely seen by parish-ioners is that of a sacristan. It is a “behind-the-scenes” position that makes the priest and deacon’s job less stress-ful. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal explains, “The following also exercise(s) a liturgical function: The sacristan, who carefully arranges the liturgical books, the vestments, and other things necessary in the celebration of the Mass” (No. 105). It is an essential service in the parish that is responsible for keeping the liturgical items for Mass in order. If you are interested in becoming a Sacristan, please con-tact Deacon Scott at [email protected]
