Did you know??? An organ stop (or just stop) is used by the organist to select which group of pipes (known as ranks) will sound when a key is pressed. This allows for a wide variety of sounds including the simulation of sounds such as those of the oboe, trombone and other orchestral instruments. The Cathedral organ has 54 stops.

Note from Rector:Observed every year, Lent is a special time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The music of this period, as every liturgical season throughout the year, captures the reflective nature of Lent. You may have noticed over the past couple weeks that three of the Masses (5:15 pm and 9:00 am) are now all in English. However, during Lent the Lamb of God will be sung in Latin, but will return to English when Lent concludes. I totally support Daniel in the changes he has made.

Nursery is open from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm Sundays for children ages 12 mos. to 3 years. The nursery is on the lower level (take the elevator).

Children’s, Youth and Adult Faith Formation

Children’s Faith Formation Corner“Children and God have a unique bond”

A major theme for the whole Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is our covenant relationship with God. In Level II, the children will begin to consider their response to God, which is part of the covenant. The expression of this relationship through Liturgy is a thread that winds throughout the children’s years of catechesis. A special focus is placed on the Liturgy of the Eucharist as well as the moral parables and Reconciliation during the First Communion year.

Please pray for the children and the Catechists in Level II; Mary Alice Teller, Pascale Anderson and Mary Neville.

1st Sunday in LentIn each of the three Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew, and Luke), after

Jesus’ baptism by John, Jesus is reported to have gone to the desert to fast and pray for 40 days. In each case, while in the desert, Jesus is tempted by the devil.

Matthew and Luke give more detail than Mark does, but each one tells how the devil tempts Jesus in the desert. In Matthew, as in Luke, the devil presents three temptations to Jesus. The devil tempts Jesus to use his power to appease his hunger; he tempts Jesus to put God’s promise of protection to the test; and he offers Jesus all of the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship the devil. In each case, Jesus resists the temptation, rebuking the devil with words from Scripture.

The account of Jesus’ temptation in the desert is filled with allusions and parallels to the Old Testament, including the story of the people of Israel. The Israelites spent 40 years wandering in the desert in Exodus, for example, and Jesus spends 40 days in the desert. As the Israelites were tempted during the Exodus, so too is Jesus tempted.

Each temptation offers insight into both God and the human condition. Jesus’ rejection of the temptations shows that he will not put God to the test. Grounding himself on the word and authority of Scripture, Jesus rebukes the devil, confident in God’s protection and faithfulness.

As we start our journey through Lent, our Sunday readings call us to adopt the same confidence that Jesus had in the face of temptation: God’s word alone will suffice; God’s promise of protection can be trusted; God alone is God. ©LoyolaPress

Life As Christian Steward Quotation for Reflection “The promotion of the practice of stewardship is important for the mission of the Church and for the spiritual well- being of each individual Christian. Everyone benefits from the sacrificial gift one makes of his time, talent and treasure.” Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (letter dated June 20, 1997)

2017 Annual Diocesan Appeal:Building Our Family of FaithWelcome to the 2017 Annual Diocesan Appeal – Building Our Family of Faith. As you may have heard, the Appeal has changed timing from the fall to the spring and all 145 parishes are once again conducting it at the same time. This year’s theme is inspired by two sources. The first is Galatians 6:10. “So, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to all men, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” The second is from Pope Pius XII. He says that there can be no discontinuity between the inward and outward graces of the Church in all its members (Cf. DS 3808 ff.), indicating that the gifts to the Church are to radiate outward, a theme repeated in Gaudium et Spes regarding the wider creation. With an overall goal of nearly $2.7 million, the 2017 Appeal will provide critical funding to nineteen diverse and impactful ministries that affect the lives of thousands of people in our Diocese. We look forward to sharing with you more about the Appeal and its impact in the very near future.

From March 1 through April 9, you’re invited to join with Christians in cities around the world for the Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign – 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You’re also invited to stand and to pray peacefully during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside the Richmond Medical Center for Women abortion clinic at 118 N. Boulevard at Grove Avenue, for one or more hours during the 40-day prayer vigil, and to help spread the word about this life-saving ministry. If you’d like more information or to volunteer to pray at home, church, or at the vigil, please contact: Ann Niermeyer, 804-714-5170, [email protected].

Fasting & The Stations of the CrossOn each Friday of Lent we will gather together to be reminded of our common journey and our devotion to Jesus. Through the Stations of the Cross, we follow Jesus Christ in his Passion and see ourselves mirrored in him. Ash Wednesday and all seven Fridays in Lent are a day of sacrifice to observe with fasting, study, self-examination, confession and prayer. On days of abstinence we abstain from meat, one full meal is allowed and the two other meals should not equal one full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. Our Lenten Soup Suppers are all followed by the Stations of the Cross at 6:30 pm. Join us in celebrating a special and meaningful Lenten season! These images bring us a sense of hope, and by accompanying Him on the Way of the Cross, we gain his courageous patience and learn to trust more in God.

All Soup Suppers begin at 5:30 pm and are followed by the Stations of the Cross at 6:30 pm in church

Holy WeekOn Palm Sunday, we celebrate the first joy of the season, as we celebrate Our Lord’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem where he was welcomed by crowds worshiping him and laying down palm leaves before him. It also marks the beginning of Holy Week, with the greatest tragedy and sorrow of the year. He returned to Jerusalem on Thursday, to share the Last Supper with His apostles. He was subsequently arrested and tried. He was crucified at Calvary on Friday, outside the gates of Jerusalem. He was buried the same day, and arose three days later, on Easter Sunday. All of this is done by our Lord for forgiveness of our sins, and for life everlasting with Him. God so loved us, that He sent His only begotten Son to die for us, so that our sins may be forgiven.
