CANTIONES SACRAE SIMPLICES
The goal of CANTIONES SACRAE SIMPLICES is to present a collection of simple motets, using liturgical texts that can be sung as Propers or at any other time during the course of the Church Year. The texts have been drawn from the Offertory and Communion antiphons of the GRADUALE ROMANUM.
I have taken care to limit vocal range and complicated rhythms, in addition to keeping the length of the motets relatively short.
Also included are optional Psalm texts in Latin and English, which allow these motets to per-fectly match the length of the liturgical action. As is traditional, the verses come from the same Psalm as the motet (with two exceptions). The English verses (in modern notation) are a direct translation of the Latin verses (in Gregorian notation). It will be noticed that the Editio Vaticana Psalm tones were rather freely adapted for the English verses, in order to accommodate the accentual patterns of the English language.
It is hoped that this collection will meet the needs not only of smaller or beginning choirs who would like to grow into more ambitious repertoire, but also advanced and professional choirs who may use these choral works at any time of the year with minimal rehearsal time.
I would like to thank the choirmasters who made me aware of the need for a collection such as this. I also wish to thank my editor, Jeff Ostrowski, for his continued encouragement and sup-port.
Soli Deo Gloria.
