I Learned Allow time to share what the teens have learned. There is always a spot on the handout for the teens to write this portion of the lesson. This can be done verbally as well. It is important for you to be able to assess if the teens in your group are meeting the objectives of the lessons. Peer Ministers can be utilized here to help you make sure teens are engaged and learning. Encourage students to take packets home and share with their parents or families

Social Action and Challenges for the week (Lived Experience) Discuss ways to put the ideas from tonight into action

Closing Prayer & Dismissal: Ask group members to share personal intentions. End with your covenant prayer if you didn’t start with it.

Discussion Questions

Baptismal discussion questions:

1. What does it mean to reject Satan? Name some examples of succumbing to Satan from yourself or your peers?

2. Is it possible to answer “no” to one of the questions below and still be a professed Catholic?

3. Your parents and godparents answered these questions at your baptism. At Confirmation, you will be asked to answer these questions for yourself as you are old enough to do so now. Why do you think these promises are such an important moment in the Rite of Confirmation.

Baptismal Vows Renewed at Confirmation: Do you reject Satan and all his works and empty promises?

Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and Earth?

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died

and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who came upon the apostles at Pentecost and

today is given to you sacramentally in Confirmation?

Do you believe in the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the

resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?

Scripture

Question: "Why was Jesus baptized? Why was Jesus' baptism important?"

Answer: At first glance, it seems that Jesus coming to be baptized has no purpose at all.

John’s baptism was the baptism of repentance (Matthew 3:11), but Jesus was sinless and

had no need of repentance. Even John was taken aback at Jesus coming to him. John

recognized his own sin and was aware that he, a sinful man in need of repentance himself,

was unfit to baptize the spotless Lamb of God: “I need to be baptized by You and You are

coming to me?” (Matthew 3:14). Jesus replied that it should be done because “it is fitting for

us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15).

There are several reasons why it was fitting for John to baptize Jesus at the beginning of His

public ministry. Jesus was about to embark on His great work, and it was appropriate that

He be recognized publicly by His forerunner. John was the “voice crying in the wilderness”

prophesied by Isaiah, calling people to repentance in preparation for their Messiah (Isaiah

40:3). By baptizing Him, John was declaring to all that here was the One they had been

waiting for, the Son of God, the One he had predicted would baptize “with the Holy Spirit

and fire” (Matthew 3:11).

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW THE MASS?

Play the ORDER OF THE MASS GAME

Below are the 4 main parts of the Mass followed by a further breakdown of the parts in

each section. The object of the game is to put the 4 main parts in order and then put the

other parts in order under each one. There are several ways you can play this using the

information below. Use one of the following ideas or come up with one of your own. Cut

out each section below and mix them up for the groups to use and place.

1. Split the class into small groups. Have them work together to put the Mass in order.

Come back together and compare. The group with the most correct wins.

2. Have two teams race to put the Mass in order, either using the dry erase board in your

room if you have one, or by cutting out the parts and laying them out in order on the floor.

First team with the correct order wins.

3. Go around the circle and ask each teen what comes first, next, etc. If they are right they

earn a point, if not the next person gets a turn. Keep going around until the Mass is in the

correct order. The person who has the most points wins.

*In all cases, please make sure you go over the correct order of the Mass at the end of the

game

Liturgy of the Eucharist Introductory Rites Concluding Rites Liturgy of the Word

Preparation of the Gifts- the altar is prepared by the altar servers and members of the assembly carry the gifts

of bread and wine to the altar. The priest asks God to bless and accept our gifts

Homily- The priest or deacon speaks about the readings and relates them to today’s world

Dismissal- sending forth to love and serve God and on e another

Eucharistic Prayer- The most important prayer of the Church. First we offer God thanksgiving and praise by

singing the Holy, Holy, Holy. Then the priest calls on the Holy Spirit to bless the gifts and change them into the

Body and Blood of Christ and we pray that we will be changed into the Body of Christ on earth. Then as the priest

recalls Jesus’ words and actions at the Last Supper, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ by

the power of the Holy Spirit and the words and actions of the priest. This is called the Consecration. We then

recall Jesus suffering, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension. We remember that the Eucharist is offered by the

Church in Heaven and on earth and we pray for the needs of the Church and that all who receive the Body and

Blood will be united. Finally we praise God and pray together a great “Amen” in love of God: Father, Son and Holy

Spirit.

Gloria- On some Sundays we sing or say this ancient hymn

Gospel Acclamation-We stand to sing the Alleluia showing we are ready to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ

Communion Rite- We pray aloud the Lord’s prayer, we offer each other a sign of Christ’s peace, and we say or

sing the Lamb of God asking Jesus for his mercy, forgiveness and peace. The priest breaks apart the Host and we

are invited to share in the Eucharist. As we come up for Communion, we are shown the Host and the Eucharistic

Minister says “ the body of Christ”, we are shown the cup and hear “the blood of Christ” Each person responds

“Amen” and receives Holy Communion. We sing together as people are going to Communion. Afterwards we

silently reflect on the gift of Jesus and God’s presence with us.

process out as we sing
