It was discovered that the ritual of ExtremeUnction that had been with the Church sincethe Council of Trent (1545) bore littleresemblance to the ritual and understanding

of anointing the sick in the early and patristicChurch. The current focus was on death, while the early focus was on physical health.

The current ministers of the sacrament werepriests, while the early ministers were laity.

In the fourth chapterif the Gospel of Matthew, right after the accountof Temptation of Jesus(verses 1-11), Jesus started his public life andpublic ministry. In his ministry highlighted in Matthew 4:23-24, healing

is a major consideration among the many things Jesus has done.Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preachingthe good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sicknessamong people. News about him spread over Syria, and people brought tohim all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the

demon possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed and hehealed them( Mt 4:23-24, NAB)

Specifically, the sacrament is clearly scripturally instituted in James 5. Isanyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits?

He should sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? He should summon thepresbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint himwith oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith will save the sickperson, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, hewill be forgiven. (James 5:13-15, NAB)

    The purpose of this Sacrament

In our day the Church wants us to understand thatAnointing is not to be feared or put off until death is certain. It is meant to help a person prepare for possible death bytaking away sins and giving peace to the soul. It helps the

person who receives it to accept God's plan for his life andto die a holy death if this is God's will. Through thissacrament, the sick and the elderly encounter Jesus, whocomes to give them his peace and comfort. The Second

Vatican Council told us:The Sacrament of the Sick should be given, not at the pointof death, but as soon as a Christian begins to be in dangerof death from sickness or old age (Sacrosanctum concilium,III, 73).
