TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

September 12, 2021

By saying “yes” to

Jesus, we willingly set

aside ways of thinking

and acting that are at

odds with the

Christian life. Faithful

discipleship demands

that we sacrifice for

the good of others,

promote peace and

justice, and seek God’s

will in whatever comes

our way. It means

being a person of love

and hope.

Bro. Silas Henderson S.D.S.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Beloved in the Lord,

In the Letter of St. James for Sunday Mass we have the words, “So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” We as Catholics get lambasted by many Protestants who say we believe we can earn our salvation by the way we live our lives. They will quote St. Paul at this, “For we hold that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law.” How do we reconcile the two passages or are they mutually exclusive even contradictory?

Protestants are correct in one way and they are wrong in another. It comes down to what St. Paul means by “Works of the law”. Some have thought this a misguided legalism in which we by doing some work of charity we can find favor with God. A false notion that we can earn our salvation. Eight times St. Paul uses the phrase “Works of the Law” twice in Romans (Rom 3:20, 28) and six times in Galatians (Gal 2:16; 3:2, 5, 10). In every circumstance he explains that they have the power to save us. In Romans 3:1 we hear these words which bring us one example of evidence that he’s talking about ritual observances, “Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision?” Over and over St. Paul is fighting with Judaizers (certain Christians Jewish converts saying that one must be circumcised, and follow all the prescripts of the Jewish laws first to be Christian). For St. Paul and us as Catholics we are justified by faith in Jesus Christ. Yet our justification it is not earned: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption which is Christ Jesus…

It’s easier to understand what St. James is getting at for in context we see he means works of love, “If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?” Where is your love if you don’t help the person in need? Can the love of God be in your heart if you don’t try and serve the one in need as Christ would?

How do we reconcile the two? On the one hand nothing we do earned our salvation. Not even a decision to have faith on our part saved us, no it is a gratuitous gift of grace. This is God justifying us according to St. Paul by claiming us as His sons and daughters. This happens in Baptism, where St. Paul proclaims that in baptism we die with Christ and Rise with Him by the power of the Spirit. In the waters of baptism we are united with the Lord’s death on the cross, but also united with the Resurrection and given the Holy Spirit and made adopted Children of God. None of this is earned and it is the reason we baptize infants.

However, St. Paul will talk about further justification or further glory by suffering with and for Christ. In this way, therefore, the justified become… “Renewed (as the apostle says) every day” (2 Cor 4:16), that is, “by putting to death the members of their flesh” (Col 3:5), and using them as “instruments of righteousness” unto sanctification by observing the commandments of God and of the Church (Rom 8:17) He also calls us to work out our salvation. “Wherefore, my dearly beloved, (as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but much more now in my absence,) with fear and trembling work out your salvation (Philippians 2:12)". It seems also that one can lose ones salvation through doing certain works of darkness.

What does it mean for us? There is an initial justification we cannot earn. It is the grace of salvation by which God’s grace, we as Catholics distinguish it by calling it sanctifying grace. That which makes us holy and enables us to live by and in the Holy Spirit. After receiving this grace we can cooperate with it by living good holy catholic lives deepening the grace in our lives. Prayer enables us to realize the power of this grace and allow it to expand our hearts. It is still at every turn a cooperation with God at work in and through us. We gain supernatural virtues that direct our lives in according to the Spirit and the use of which can deepen. We can agree with Protestants that we are saved by grace through faith, but further we need to live and cooperate with the grace of God bestowed through works of Love.

The Mass shows us this particularly well as we must receive Jesus into us and cooperate with the love He bestows upon us in the world in which we live. So much can be said on the above topic but hopefully I gave you enough to chew on for a while! As I finish this article I realized its 9/11 this weekend let us pray for God’s grace on our country to be renewed in the Spirit of God!

In Christ, Fr. Michael

Rachel’s Vineyard Twin Cities Retreat If you or someone you love is grieving the loss of a child or children to abortion, come and experience the compassionate mercy of Jesus Christ on our confidential weekend

retreat. Rachel’s Vineyard Twin Cities’ retreats are open to anyone impacted by abortion—women, men, grandparents, siblings, and health care professionals. The next

retreat is November 5-7, 2021 in the Twin Cities area. For more information contact Nancy at [email protected], call 763-250-9313 or see www.rvineyardmn.org.

Texas recently passed a heartbeat bill that bans abortions after a heartbeat has been detected or if no heartbeat has been tested for. The “Texas Heartbeat Act” explicitly states that the state of Texas can’t be sued. This bill does, however, allow private citizens of Texas the right to sue anyone performing an abortion or aiding or abetting an abortion. As a result, on September 1, all 11 Planned Parenthoods in Texas have stopped scheduling appointments to perform abortions after 6 weeks. The U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 on September 2 to formally deny the abortion lobby’s request to block the “Texas Heartbeat Act”.

Even with this momentary pro-life victory, the fight is far from over. Planned Parenthood still has an active lawsuit against Texas and several individuals that will proceed in the lower courts. But the good news is that the “Texas Heartbeat Act” is written so that if sections of it are ruled “unconstitutional”, large portions of it could remain intact. With the potential to save millions of babies, this is an incredible win for the pro-life movement and will hopefully set a shining example for the entire country. The next pro-life meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 14th at 12:30 pm at the home of Rose Krenik
