INSIDE THIS ISSUE

This week we have celebrated Mercy Day with a Whole School Mass on Wednesday and our Mercy Day Carnival to conclude the term today. These very different events allow us to experience both quiet contemplation and joyful celebration, essential aspects of our Mercy charism.

Around 25 Year 12 students and three staff members gathered in the Redden Centre two weeks ago to participate in a Winter Sleep Out, raising awareness of the issues of homelessness in Adelaide. Year 11 students Chloe and Tara were chosen to represent SAC at the Australasian Mercy Secondary Schools Association Student Conference this week in Sydney. With the theme of ‘Building Bridges’, they connected with students from Mercy schools across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. A shared passion for social justice binds these young people together and they were given the opportunity to explore many of the Mercy Works taking place in and around Sydney. Chloe and Tara have shown great commitment to Justice and Mercy activities, and will no doubt bring some new plans back from this inspiring experience.

Performances at the Catholic Schools’ Music Festival this week showcased the talents of our 6/7 Choir, solo cellist Rachel Nicholson 9RK, Catch 22, Orchestra and student compere Lauren Kellerman-Clarke 9VC. It was a proud moment for many parents to see their daughters on stage at the Festival Centre. We hope that this experience will nurture the creativity of all involved and acknowledge the wonderful work of our Music Department to prepare for this event.

This term has seen two expeditions to the Flinders Ranges for our Year 9 students. The Week 9 group dealt with some particularly difficult weather conditions and staff spoke highly of the resilience and positive attitudes shown by the students. We are grateful to all the staff who make these trips possible and especially Mr Alan Brown, who coordinates the program. A belief in the growth and development of students that takes place in new and challenging environments is at the heart of teachers’ commitment to outdoor education, and we are grateful for their generosity.

Last Sunday I attended a Mass at the Cathedral to celebrate the Archbishop’s Awards for 2016. These awards recognise students who live out their faith through their contributions to their school and the wider community. I couldn’t have been more proud of Isabelle and Emily, who embody our Mercy values and represent our College with such grace. It was wonderful to celebrate their achievements with their families and the Adelaide Cathedral Parish. We look forward to celebrating all our Year 12 students’ achievements in the Term 4 farewell celebrations.

In this Extraordinary Year of Mercy, we have been invited to attend to the Cry of the Earth and the Cry of the Poor. As I reflect on the events in the life of St Aloysius College over the last fortnight, I can see the response to that call in the actions of our students, supported by their families and the staff of the College.

SECONDARY SPORTTOURNAMENT OF MINDSSeven students from Year 5-7 formed the SAC Tournament of Minds team for 2016. On Sunday 11 September the team competed in the inter-school competition at Flinders University. The girls chose to participate in the Science and Technology Challenge where they had six weeks to work together to problem solve, create a solution and perform it to a panel of judges. The team’s dedication, cooperation, work ethic paid off as SAC was presented with Honours, meaning we achieved in the top 10% of our category. We are extremely proud of the team and their achievements, problem solving and creativity.

Ms Nadia Costantini & Ms Tenielle NuskeTOM FACILITATORS

I really enjoyed the Tournament of Minds experience as I learned so much. I respect my opportunity to be able to input ideas into the 2016 Tournament of Minds SAC team. I learned lots of life skills such as time management, organisation and having the ability to think on the spot. Overall, I really enjoyed the whole experience. Georgia Psarros 6RL We had been working over six weeks to put our Long Term Challenge together. We even had to get a whole day off school to work on Tournament of Minds. On Sunday 11 September we had to go to Flinders University to do the competition. As soon as everyone got to Flinders University we started practicing our Long Term Challenge. Then at 1:30pm we walked over to the Spontaneous Courtyard. The question they asked us was:

There is a staircase. Why is it important? What are the two places that staircase connects? And, what is the connection between the two places?

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS

Our idea was that each colour on the staircase is a culture and each brick is someone’s story. The place at the bottom of the staircase is our world now, but at the top of the staircase is a place where everyone accepts each other for who they are. After that, we walked over to the Science Technology building. We watched Nazareth’s Long Term Challenge. Then it was our turn. I was so nervous, but it wasn’t so bad once we started to do it. Elizabeth Rutherford 5LMWhen we arrived, we met by the Education Building and went around the side to rehearse. Soon after we went into our Spontaneous Challenge. During the Spontaneous Challenge we were presented with a question and given five minutes to answer it. Then we went over to our Long Term Challenge waiting area where I met up with an old friend. During our performance, the judges didn’t give us any time to set up, therefore we ran out of time. But the judges accepted us going overtime and let us finish. We had lots of fun and I will audition again next year. Zoe Hosking 6MPI loved being involved in Tournament of Minds again this year. I learnt lots about teamwork and problem solving. It also taught me a lot about on the spot decisions and improvisation. I was very happy with myself and my team about what we achieved. Mia Konopka 6SHI learned so much during the six weeks I participated in Tournament of Minds. I have gained many skills such as thinking on the spot and teamwork. The overall experience was amazing and I learned that even when mistakes are made you have to work through them and continue doing the best you can and sometimes, such as this time, it can be enough. I’m very proud of my teammates and of our achievements. Mahlet Negash 6RLTournament of Minds gave me an experience unlike any other. I made friends, solved a problem and had fun. I learned how to make a vortex generator which was awesome. I gained knowledge and friends and would like to do it again. Miranda Gorman 7JT

SECONDARY SPORTSPACE, TIMING, RHYTHM & DANCE SEQUENCESDuring the second half of this term, the Reception classes have been participating in a dance unit where they have been learning about space, timing, rhythm and dance sequences. The focus has been on building confidence and expressing themselves through movement using a variety of body parts. Locomotion across the dance floor has also been a major focus. Students have enjoyed participating in themed lessons, partner dancing and group dancing.

For the remainder of term students will concentrate on line dances and creating their own basic choreography. The Reception PE staff look forward to seeing further progress in this unit.

SECONDARY SPORTHIGH ENERGY & ENTHUSIASM!Term 3 Physical Education had an intense Athletics focus with our Year 9 students displaying high energy and enthusiasm whilst achieving impressive times, jumps and throws across a variety of events. To conclude this busy term of PE, the girls were introduced to table tennis and badminton; two sports developed further in the Year 10 and 11 Physical Education program. The students were keen to explore new striking techniques, as well as tactics around the court and table, to improve their game in both badminton and table tennis. The gym was often buzzing with a mixture of laughter as beginners performed enthusiastically in a desperate attempt to return a difficult shot; but also with friendly competitiveness as the skill level improved and winning tactics were applauded.

A CASE OF IDENTITY IN SCIENCE

The Year 10 students had great fun solving a murder mystery as part of the Forensics Science school incursion put on by Education Interactive. The scenario:“A 17 year old school girl is found lying dead on the ground in a disused military bunker. The girl’s parents reported her missing four days prior when she failed to return home from school. There are signs of a struggle and a substantial wound to the head appears to be the cause of death. Students will examine the crime scene and analyse the evidence including entomology, trace evidence, fingerprints, toxicology and much more. On top of the science, this case also deals with cyber safety and drink spiking prevention.”

SECONDARY SPORTSCIENCE NEWSA CASE OF IDENTITY

This course is free of charge to successful applicants, due to Department of State Development sponsorship and industry support. It is expected that participants commit to attending the whole eight day course.

I really enjoyed learning about the logistics of how forensics/detective work goes into solving cases. Although it was a fairly straight forward case, it was extremely educational and fun especially using our own classmates as characters! Kiara Murphy 10AW

We found it very enjoyable and informative. We learnt how they use mobile phones to track people. We learnt the process that forensic scientists go through to help identify the guilty. We enjoyed the interactive activities and having to try and solve the murder case. Lucy Hamer & Ella Ferraretto 10AW

Throughout the whole presentation, each student got to learn about what is involved in a forensic science career. We were given a situation where we had to use what we had learnt to identify the murderer. It was a great opportunity for all of us to work together. Personally, I enjoyed looking for small details to identify the main suspect. I found the autopsy very interesting. Overall, it was great to work interactively and I would love to learn even more about forensic science. Stephanie Smith 10AW

SECONDARY SPORTFROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENTTALENTED STRING PLAYERS AT SAC

Sisters Emily and Lucy are both talented string players at St Aloysius College. They have put a few words together to inspire other interested students to take up learning a string instrument.

“I have been playing Cello for three years. My favourite thing about playing the Cello is that you get to learn new pieces of music and sometimes you get to do tricks like spinning the Cello around! I’m proud of my Australian Music Examination Board exam results and also I like doing Eisteddfods because you get to compete and win prizes. I would encourage other students who are interested to learn a string instrument because it’s fun and I think it’s cool because you learn new things and can be part of orchestras and ensembles.” Lucy“I have been playing Violin for a bit over four years. I enjoy playing it because I’m able to dance around the room while I’m playing! I’m proud of my achievements in the Eisteddfod and my exam results. I’m also really proud of my music knowledge at school because it’s really helped with my violin playing. I would recommend students learn a string instrument because it actually makes you smarter. Also you get to experiment more with different sounds and you can do special effects like slides, which is really fun. I think if you’re interested in starting a new instrument just go for it! It might be a bit difficult to start with but you just have to have go.” Emily

This year, Emily featured as a soloist in the Catholic Schools Music Festival, which is a huge credit to her hard work and dedication to the choir while developing her vocal skills. “I decided to go for a solo because I thought it would be a really great experience and maybe I could have a chance to sing on the Festival stage. I was so nervous for the call-back auditions but I powered through and I calmed my nerves and I actually made some new friends from other schools. My solo is “One” by the John Farnham and it’s actually two solos in one song. On the night I tried and calmed my nerves. If you feel really shy about singing, the CSMF is a great way to have a laugh, learn different songs and appreciate singing different genres throughout Music.” Emily
