Kumir--sabar tolaSabar Tola is a small Village/hamlet in Chakulia Block in East Singhbum District of Jharkhand State, India. It comes under Basadiha Panchayath. It is located 76 KM towards East from District head quarters Jamshedpur. 202 KM from State capital RanchiThrough Tagore society for rural development, we got an opportunity to interact with the tribal population of sabar tola. Most of the inhabitants are temporarily employed in farmers land during the monsoon season. The income for most of the families come from MNREGA. Sometimes they get involved with brick loading activities. Hence the problem of unemployment is very pervasive as most of the jobs are rainfall dependent. The village was lacking on the infrastructure front. Their assets include their own houses, usually very basic in nature and made out of mud and bricks with temporary roofs. Other basic amenities like kitchen and bathrooms are very primitive in nature. On the education front, the village had a school with two teachers who had done M.A and B.ed. However the teacher student ratio was not promising at all because of the remoteness of the village. However classes usually happen only for the duration of two hours and process for registration of students is tedious. As a part of our Endeavour to understand the villagers better, we interacted with a few of them to understand their problems. We realized the dependency on alcohol is huge in this area. Not only the adults but even the kids are fed alcohol. The villagers possessed good hunting skills and had proficiency in using arrows and catapult to catch their prey; frog and rats. All the 22 families are provided with basic documents like ration cards, passbook, bpl card and aadhar card. There is a provision for vaccination as well. Also tube well is provided by the government as a source of water.A very important of this tribe was the preference for girl child.Boys get married at the age of18 and girls at 12; bridegroom pays for the wedding, thats another unconventional thing.
