It originates in Dhebar lake inAravalli Rangeof theUdaipur DistrictofRajasthanand meets theGulf of CambayofArabian Seaafter travelling 371km in a south-westerly direction. The Sabarmati basin has a maximum length of 300km. and maximum width of 105km. The total catchment area of the basin is 21674km2out of which, 4124km2lies in Rajasthan State and the remaining 18550km2in Gujarat State.It is believed that earlier the river used to flow fromManek Chowk.Importance of Sabarmati River.It has been an integral aspect of Ahmedabad city since its foundation.It has provided space for cultural and recreational activities along the banks.Mahatma Gandhi set-up his ashram along the banks of the river and during the freedom movement, the Salt March began from here.It also became a venue for other informal economic activities such as the Ravivari- Sunday flea market.Ravivari

Problems faced by this heritage:Untreated sewage flowed into the river through storm water outfalls and dumping of industrial waste posed a major health and environmental hazard.The river bank settlements were disastrously prone to floods and lacked basic infrastructure facilities.Lacklustre development took shape along the riverfront.
