SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS MEDIA GUIDE 2017 SEASON 243 AWARDS & HONORS 2015: 49ers Community Service Family Award (Co-Recipient) 2016: 49ers Community Service Family Award GOLDMINE Along with fellow 49ers TE Garrett Celek and DT Tank Carradine, McDonald vis- ited Haiti in conjunction with Convoy of Hope, working to- gether to teach healthy eat- ing habits and sustainable agriculture techniques to lo- cal families. The players also visited an orphanage and local schools to spend time with underprivileged youth. “What I’ve seen here is just the impact everyone can have. We truly can come to- gether and make a difference for people. It really opened our eyes to all the amenities that we take for granted – having ice, running water, food, air conditioning and the list goes on.” No more than three months after returning from his trip to Haiti, McDonald was eager to continue his giving ways. In partnership with his lo- cal church, he and his wife headed to Nicaragua to help build a church and develop a trade school for young men to learn different skills such as carpentry and welding. His visit in Haiti involved much more manual labor than his time in Haiti. “We were also installing a water system, and so we were digging up water lines for their kitchen. That took a couple days. Prior to the trip, I held an autograph session at the church to help raise money for all this. We raised a ton of money and had enough funds to redo the entire inside of the school. We got water and electricity running so the kids could study at nighttime. We basi- cally installed an entire ceiling and panels for the walls for insula- tion to make it more comfortable.” McDONALD’S GOLDEN NUGGETS In 2016, became the fourth TE since the merger in 1970, and the first since 1997, to register two TD recepts. of 65 yds.-or- more in the same season. Named a co-recipient of the 49ers Community Service Family Award in consecutive seasons (2015-16) along with his wife, Kendi. Hosted a charity event in June of 2015 featuring all 49ers tight ends with proceeds going to the Nicaragua Mission Trip team. Spent his draft day at home in Winnie, TX, with his family and closest family friends. “It was a big thing for the small town,” he said. GOLDMINE (CONTINUED) Growing up, McDonald spent a lot of his time at the Drake Plan- tation in Winnie, a large open land full of wildlife such as ducks, geese and deer, which his uncle owned. He went fishing, caught crawfish and rode four-wheelers. “I loved just being an outdoors- man,” he said. “It’s a big agricultural town.” McDonald grew up in Win- nie, Texas, which was dis- covered to have a large oil field and currently has about 3,500 residents. “We have three stop lights and any fast food restaurant you can possibly imagine and a bunch of hotels,” McDonald said to describe Winnie. “It’s a place for truckers to stop off and get some rest and a bite to eat driving off to Louisiana.
