June already! Well at least we’ve had a bit of sunshine, and I’m

hoping for a heat wave as we’re heading back to Grove Cottage in Whitby as soon as this goes to print – avoiding the ash cloud, with a bit of luck!

I would like to start with a thank you to everyone for their support on the expansion to 8,000 properties last month, particularly the people who got in touch with encouragement and positive feedback, it’s was really appreciated. Anyway – as a result of the expansion we welcome a number of new businesses on board, so please take a look and see what they can do for you.

So, back to this issue, well I’ve really indulged my passion for cycling this month – I think it’s

justified as it’s bike week from the 19th June ‐ plus, and I’m very excited about this one, I have heard we have a new cycling shop opening up, just off Chatsworth Road, perfect timing with Bike Week being so close … anyway I hope you find the cycling focus interesting and that it may even inspire some of you to get out and ride!

I wonder if our new PM, David Cameron will still cycle to work?!

For those of you less enthralled about the prospect of two wheels, we have an interesting behind the business with Libby’s at 479.

There are a few items in the new classified section, please do get in touch, we could do with

filling this space … and if the items you are selling are less than £100 there is no charge. The business news section has some snippets and interesting changes for our area and we’ve added a new sports section, many thanks to Howard Borrell for scripting this.

Looking ahead to next month, we hope to include some great things to do through the summer, so if you have any ideas, suggestions or would like your business included please drop me a line.

ell us about yourself and your background?

“I spent 20 years working as a lecturer before taking a break to

raise my family. Prior to this I ran an antiques fair business and had enjoyed developing my knowledge of antiques and collectables. In 2007 with my 50th birthday approaching I thought long and hard about what I would most enjoy doing in a business context. For some years I had become convinced that there was a good market locally for contemporary interiors pieces complimented with antiques but I was also convinced that customers yearned for good old‐fashioned customer service too. I played with my ideas, talked to friends, other businesses (and anyone who would listen!) and started to establish the blue print for 479.”

>> 479 used to be Ian Morris antiques. How did you become involved and what involvement does Ian have now?

“As many people probably know, Ian Morris has been an established antiques dealer for some 40 years. Ian was finding the time needed to run the antiques shop was taking him

away from what he enjoyed ‐ searching out interesting items.

For many years I had wanted to start my own business and Ian’s desire to reduce his day‐to‐day commitments to his shop presented us both with an opportunity to work in collaboration.

And collaboration is what 479 is all about really. All of the businesses in the building work in a complimentary fashion to each other.”

>> Why 479? What was your inspiration behind the business?

“My vision was to turn 479 into a local mini department store offering something for everyone with good old‐fashioned customer service – where you can always be sure of a friendly welcome.

We provide a mix of the artisan (Clare Gage) and best of local artists (Created) with body and facial products (Amethyst) and Libby’s even offers shoppers the opportunity to ‘green shop’ – antiques and vintage items are really the first example of recycling aren’t they?”

Ed: I find the mix of old and new really interesting, I’m not your typical

antiques shopper yet often find myself attracted to some of the older items and end up parting with my cash.

“I aim to display some of the ‘on trend’ items alongside antiques and collectables and in doing so, reflect what many peoples homes look like ‐ family items with sentimental value positioned alongside the new.”

>> Who is part of 479 other than yourself and Deirdre at Created?

“To create the right effect at 479 we needed symbiotic businesses and I think we’ve achieved that, with Libby’s the mix of old and new, Created Gallery for new and more contemporary items and Kaye of Amethyst for treats for the body and soul – in my opinion Kaye has to be the best beauty therapist in the area.

The premises also had space for a studio, I call it the ‘potting shed’, which Clare Gage occupies.

I’m lucky to have a small band of local people with specialist skills who work alongside me when needed. They are the 479 ‘extended family’ and all part of the community ethos of the business.

The sense of working together and being supported was really highlighted when Clare Gage, our resident ceramist, was offered a stand at the Country Living Show last year. With only 2 weeks to go to the show, the 479 businesses worked together to create a fabulous stand (paint still wet at the 11th hour). Clare won the ‘stand of the show award’ – which meant that this year she had a free stand at the show. It just goes to show how recycled ‘stuff’ can work and how great team work can really make things happen!”

>> There’s been some change recently and the deli has moved, has this changed what you do?

“We have utilised the additional showroom space with some fabulous pieces purchased for the spring however, a new and exciting development with a French theme is coming soon, I’m not going to spoil the surprise, so as they say, watch this space’.”

>> What are your favourite things in the shop?

“I work hard to find new and different things for my customers and it’s always exciting to take delivery of a new range – recently arrived is a new range of French Home fragrances, and I’d love to widen the range of organic and chemical free products.

We just launching a range of exclusive hand painted gifts. Our customers will be able to choose from an array of terracotta planters, wooden buckets, hearts, jugs and pots and if they wish to have a name or special message added we can do it. Some of the pots will also be planted with fresh growing produce –delicious peas, luscious green vegetables and herbs, what could be a nicer gift?”

>> What’s the most unusual item you stock?

“Our healthy back bags are a great product and have received good reviews from customers and the bags certainly make a positive difference to your back. Of course, you never know what Ian may bring in to the shop

next! There’s always something unusual!”

>> So what are your thoughts on Chatsworth Road?

“Chatsworth Road is vibrant, busy and the main arterial route twixt the M1 and Manchester. I’m not sure of the demographics of vehicles passing daily but it’s huge and has enormous potential for the businesses in the area. The business community here moves ever closer to becoming the ‘Ecclesall Road’ of Chesterfield. We increasingly get new customers coming to 479 for a look whilst breaking their journeys and we are always delighted to welcome them. It would be great if we could really raise the game and make it a real destination to be proud of.”

“Nonna’s” and I’ve recently enjoyed an evening of great food at Buckinghams.”

Q2. Favourite place to go for a walk or escape from it all?

“From my house in Brampton across the fields to Old Brampton and Holymoorside.”

Q3. Best thing about the community around you?

“Providing a good service and high standard of customer service has meant that many of my customers pop in to the shop regularly. We have lots of fun and laughter, sometimes it can be like a WI meeting. I then have the added dimension of the community of businesses within the building, which provides a supportive environment for us all. In fact, it’s not a bad life!”

ritains Bike Week, what is it, what does it aim to achieve and what's going on locally?

Bike Week, founded by EDF Energy and run by Team Green Britain is the UK’s biggest mass cycling event, and challenges every one of us to rethink our everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.

This year sees towns, villages and cities across the UK hosting free cycling events with the theme of ‘everyday cycling, for everyone’.

Locally, Chesterfield Cycling Campaign have organised a number of events, in and around Chesterfield, see the “what’s on” guide and the facing page for details. Plus, Polaris Apparel (a Dronfield based manufacturer of technical cycling clothes) has arranged two evening rides, aimed at encouraging cyclists of different abilities onto their bikes ‐ see the Polaris box, on this page.

Victoria Pendleton, World and Olympic champion cyclist said: “I would encourage everyone to get involved, by choosing to cycle to the shops, school or for leisure, you’ll find you get to your destination quicker, save money, get fit and reduce your carbon footprint all at the same time. If everyone were to swap one car journey a day for a bike trip, think of the collective benefit – to our planet, our pockets and our health!”

Walton To Town on Two Wheels?

ver wondered about cycling down into town rather than taking the car? If so, Alastair Meikle from the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign has put

together a safe route from Walton ‐ see the route below. “I like to use my bicycle to go into town from Walton. Journey times are always reliable and I get some exercise and fresh air.

I start on the Hipper Valley Trail that runs through Somersall Park. Going towards town I negotiate the bridge and turn right along a lovely shaded path between the river and the Walton Dam feeder stream. This quickly opens out onto Walton Dam and there is a great view of the Crooked Spire in the distance.

After dropping away from the dam there is a safe crossing of Walton Road by Toucan crossing and then the only relatively busy bit alongside Morrisons supermarket which is handy for supplies!

I am shortly back off‐road alongside

the old Walton Works site with the rather decrepit 'fireproof' mill on the left. Back on the road the route takes me along Goyt Side, a reasonably quiet road passing Robinsons remaining factory with the railings depicting scenes

from their past.

Quickly dropping down Dock Walk past Cannon Mill which reputably made cannon balls for the battle of Waterloo I get onto the shared pavement outside Travis Perkins. This is a bit of a cyclists hub because it is the junction of the Holmebrook Valley Trail winding its way out to Loundsley Green, Holmebrook Valley Park, Linacre and Cutthorpe.

Crossing Boythorpe Road by Toucan I use the cycle track through the Leisure Centre car park and then along the north side of Queen's Park (did you know this was an old railway line?).

Today I decide to go over the bridge into town, although I usually have to push up onto the bridge. Sometimes I go all the way to Park Road and go into town using the cycle lanes to cross Markham Road.

Chesterfield Cycle Campaign has existed since 1995 and now has its highest membership of just under 320. The Campaign exists to promote cycling as a viable sustainable local travel option. We regularly meet Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council to discuss provision of cycle infrastructure and promotion of cycling. The Campaign is an official consultee to planning and highway proposals.

Mainly through the summer we hold a cycling information stall at several events. Sometimes we run 'Dr Bike' sessions where you can bring your bike for a check out, and we occasional organise rides which are usually family friendly distances, on quiet roads.

Ten things in the garden for June Thanks to Paul @ Ashgate Garden Care

After a slow start things seem to be coming on leaps and bounds in the garden. Ten things to do this month include:

1. Plant out bedding plants and prepare hanging baskets.

2. Keep hoeing your flower beds and veggie plot to keep weeds under control.

3. Prune spring flowering shrubs once the flowers have faded.

4. Make sure your veggie patch remains watered.

5. Support tall or floppy plants to help you mow the grass a little easier.

6. Cut back dead bulb foliage such as daffodils once they have died down naturally.

7. Move garden furniture around regularly to prevent yellow patches on your lawn.

8. Clip privet, box and Lonicera hedges.

9. Prune Clematis montana once it has finished flowering.

10. Keep cutting your lawn.

Could you become a cycle commuter?

’ve always been intrigued by the Brompton, it always seemed like a little bit of a weird arrangement to me when I was younger and heavily into road and

mountain bikes. But just recently I’ve seen an increasing number of people moving around on them, and when on the platform of Chesterfield Station I saw the ease with which a cyclist folded it up and boarded the train ‐ with no inconvenience or animosity from fellow passengers, I suddenly started to understand its appeal.

As such I have been vaguely stalking Brompton riders who regularly ride to the station and take their bike with them, so I could talk to them for this edition.

Simon Redding lives in Ashgate and spends his days working all over the UK, with a day a week with his team in Bristol. He says “I’ve easily saved the purchase cost of my Brompton which is well made and extremely robust.”

He previously used to take the taxi to station, take the train and then get a taxi at the other end. His journey to the station is 1.5 miles and typically around 4 miles at the other end. Fed up of problems with taxis and getting stuck in traffic, he decided to try a

standard bicycle and this was fine until one day he wasn’t the only person trying to board the train with a bike. This meant he had to wait for the next train … it was at this point he realised that although it was easier and quicker than the car, using the bike had issues associated.

The answer was a Brompton, which does the same job as standard cycle but then folds small enough to go in the luggage rack. “It saves me time, saves on parking fees, removes risk associate with boarding the train and enables me to continue the journey at

my destination. It only takes 10 seconds or so to fold it up and about 30 seconds to set it up at the other end, I’m then peddling off, no need to get cabs or any hassle. If I have to cross the station concourse the bikes have wheels on the rear which enable you to pull them along behind you folded up.” Large cities are constantly improving their cycle facilities and certainly Bristol and London

present lots of dedicated lanes and alternatives to the busy roads.

Mark Loveland of Chatsworth Road

has always been into his bicycles. Growing up in the countryside his bike was a form of transport and simply enabled him to move around independently.

Mark is a GP at Wheatbridge, his work involves time as a locum and he’s also lead GP for the Wheatbridge Primary Care Research Centre, which requires him to attend research activities and courses in London. Mark favours train travel over driving and the best option for getting to the station and the final destination is to cycle. His Brompton was an eBay purchase, which he thinks has lead to a cycling renaissance as second hand bikes are now in good supply and easily obtained. “The Brompton folds up easily and is small enough to stow in the luggage department at the end of the carriage. Using the bike is practical, I’m not impacted by traffic jams or delays, I can take quiet routes away from the main roads, it’s good exercise and I enjoy it … it’s fun.”

So after speaking to Simon and Mark, having paid to park at Chesterfield station at £8 a day and having travelled on a train with my mountain bike, if I was commuting regularly by train, this might just become my vehicle of choice?

Now I try not to do this, but with cycling I have to admit to the “competitive Dad” syndrome.

My son was cycling without stabilisers shortly after his 3rd birthday, now I didn’t get started until I was 7 so I was pretty pleased with him for achieving this.

So how come he was riding so early?

Well my theory is that it’s down to a Balance Bike (or Run Bike as the

Americans tend to call them) that we bought whilst on holiday in Austria.

Thanks to Wikipedia … “A balance bike is a training bike which helps children learn balance and steering. It doesn’t have any pedals, crank , chain and perhaps most importantly training wheels or stabilisers.

To function properly, a balance bike must be small enough that a child can walk the bike while sitting comfortably in the saddle, putting both feet flat on the ground. They first walk the bike while standing over the saddle, then while sitting in the saddle. Eventually, they feel confident enough to scoot while riding the bike, then to lift both feet off the ground and cruise while balancing on two wheels. Children as young as 18 months can learn to cruise a balance bike with a few hours' practice … balance achieved without them even realising it.

With a balance bike, the child learns balance first, pedal last. In contrast, with a normal bike fitted with stabilisers, the rider learns to pedal first, balance last. Although opinions differ regarding which learning sequence is easier for most riders, it is generally agreed that a bike with pedals is too difficult for most very young children and stabilisers may encourage the child to learn some behaviours which must later be unlearned.”

In our case, our son probably spent the best part of 12 months on his balance bike, doing miles on the Peak District trails, and the transition to his “big boys bike” with pedals was simply achieved with a few nights spent practicing after tea.

He likes to cycle down to preschool at St Thomas’s some days and it’s a joy trundling through Somersall Park with him, backpack on, containing all life's essentials.

To begin with I take a look at

the "Terminus Bowling Club"

situated on Chatsworth Road

across from what was the old

tram terminus many years

ago and a pub and restaurant

much more recently .

Crown Green bowling has

taken place in Brampton for

over a hundred years. The

current Terminus Bowling

club was founded in 1913 and

played on the green owned

by Brampton Brewery

(records show bowls was

played as early as 1859 on a

different site in Brampton).

The Chairman of the brewery,

Mr E.T. Hargreaves, was a

keen bowler and in 1923 he

was elected the first

President when the club had

just 40 members.

In 1977 the members

completed the purchase of

the actual bowling green

(aided by a grant from the

Sports Council) from the then

owners, John Smiths brewery

and in 1987 a new pavilion

was added.

In 1989 the club entered the

Chesterfield and District

Bowling Association

Wednesday League. Four

teams take part with the

Terminus A team currently

sitting proudly at the top of

Division 3.

It seems odd nowadays but

for most of its history the

club was a "men only"

body; all that changed in

2009 when lady members

were made welcome and the

club entered the 21st century.

The thriving club that is now

nearing its own centenary

has internal competitions,

league teams, friendly

matches and regular social

bowling which provides

competition and challenges

to bowlers of all ages and

skill.

I went along recently and was

made very welcome. I

enjoyed my introduction and

I'm sure you would too. The

best time to pop along is on a

Monday or Friday afternoon

from 1.30 pm when friendly

social bowling takes place.

Everything needed will be

provided just bring a pair of

trainers or flat shoes to

ensure the immaculate green

remains in superb condition.
