About This Booklet

There are many different and varied sources of information for VM/ESA. This is good, because different people need different kinds of information. On the other hand, so many sources sometimes make it difficult to actually find what you need. That’s the main rea-son why we produced this booklet – to help you find information about VM/ESA as quick-ly and as efficiently as possible.

Two main audiences are targeted:

❑ People who need an overview to VM and its functions. Managers or decision makers could, for example, fit in this category.

❑ People who need specific technical information or assistance. System pro-grammers come to mind here.

This booklet provides you with information for topics like:

❑ Internet sites related to VM

❑ Opportunities for communication with IBM or other VM users

❑ IBM publications

It does not contain technical details about VM/ESA.

The facing page shows how you can contact us. We would like that, especially if you know of other information sources which we have missed. Please do not hesitate to con-tact us so that so that we can include this source in any future update.

While all these calls are offered at no-charge, you must register to attend, (dial 1-800-289-0583, and outside the U.S. and Canada, 719-457-2550). Upon enrollment, you will receive a dial-in number for the call and a choice of easy options for receiving your pre-sentation handouts for use during the call.

IBM Redbookshttp://www.ibm.com/redbooks/

IBM Redbooks are developed and published by IBM's International Technical Support Organization, the ITSO. With headquarters in Poughkeepsie (New York), the ITSO oper-ates centers associated with key IBM development Divisions in Austin, Poughkeepsie, Raleigh, Rochester, and San Jose. The ITSO develops and delivers skills, technical know-how, and materials to technical professionals of IBM, Business Partners, custom-ers, and to the marketplace generally.

IBM Redbooks typically provide positioning and value guidance, installation and imple-mentation experiences, typical solution scenarios, and step-by-step “how-to” guide-lines. They often include sample code and other support materials that are also available as downloads from this site.

IBM Redbooks are available as hardcopy books, in a wide assortment of orderable CD-ROMs including the collection for S/390-related Redbooks: SK2T-2177-19, S/390 Red-books Collection, and on the Internet at http://www.ibm.com/redbooks . This web site contains additional information on availability and ordering of IBM Redbooks. In addtion to the IBM Redbooks, also available are IBM Redpieces, works-in-progress that normally are published as IBM Redbooks when completed, and IBM Redpapers, technical docu-ments that are more focused at specific topics than customary for Redbooks.

Among the most popular IBM Redbooks directly relating to VM are:

IBM Redbookshttp://www.ibm.com/redbooks/

❑ VM/ESA Network Computing with Java and NetRexx, SG24-5148-00 This redbook describes how to install and configure both Java and NetRexx using the IBM provided installation files and scripts. It also covers a selection of VM tools that make using NetRexx and Java easier and less trouble-prone to the applications developer. There is a detailed comparison of NetRexx to classic REXX to help guide VM/REXX programmers through the similarities and differences and introduce them to the novel capabilities of NetRexx. Also included are hints and tips on good NetRexx design and wealth of examples of NetRexx application programming techniques in the CMS environment. The complete set of sample programs developed during the residency are available in the VM Download Library in a package called SG24-5148 (description).

❑ VM/ESA Year2000 Migration - A Case Study, SG24-2042This Redbook is based on real customer environments, as opposed to the traditional lab environment. The VM/ESA V2.2.0 test sytem came from the Government of Brit-ish Columbia, Canada, and the VM/ESA V1.2.2 system to be migrated came from Telecom, New Zealand. Both sys-tems encompass several IBM and non-IBM products, giv-ing this Case Study even more credibility and usability.

❑ Exploiting Recent CMS Function: A User's Guide to CMS Application Multitasking, SG24-5164-00CMS Application Multitasking has been an integral part of CMS since CMS level 9 (VM/ESA Version 1 Release 2.0); however, many CMS programmers, particularly REXX programmers, have not yet learned how to take advan-tage of the highly significant and useful functions, such as event, queue and timer services, that this suite of APIs provides. The intent of this redbook is to provide an approachable, introductory user's guide that addresses these concerns by offering both tutorial information on the capabilities and useful sample programs that installations can readily adapt to meet local needs.Programs used during the residency are available in the VM download library in the SG24-5164 package.
