Program NotesThis Scottish-flavored, uptempo piece in has a lilting, joyful feel throughout. Written in three sections (fast-slow-fast), Highland Celebration is built around two rhythmic subdivisions: two groups of three eighth notes per measure and three groups of two eighth notes per mea-sure. Have the ensemble distinguish between the two subdivisions by tapping each one separately; make an exercise of the rhythm in mm.1–2 in the trumpets to facilitate playing the accented rhythms correctly—(1 2 3 - 4 5 6) and (1 2 - 3 4 -5 6).
Rehearse the opening sixteen measures below tempo for precision in the brass melody and accuracy in the woodwind countermelodies. After the introduction, the form of the first fast section is AABAC. The woodwinds carry the A-melody at m. 17; concentrate on differentiating between measures with straight eighth notes (m. 21) and measures with dot-ted-eighth/sixteenth-note figures. The low woodwinds provide a pulse and a foundation in m. 25 and are joined by the tuba in this role in m. 41. Strive for crispness in the low winds here. Observe the harmonized upper woodwind lines in mm. 43–44 and m. 50 and practice slowly, so they are played together. Take a look at mm. 65–70 as the ensemble plays tutti rhythms there, building toward a restatement of the A-melody.
A lyrical flute solo over woodwind sustained notes, approximating subtle bagpipe-like drones, begins the slow section (m. 83) with the rest of the ensemble joining in a chorale-like manner in m. 91. Returning to Tempo I and the feel of the introduction at m. 99, a slow build leads to a call-and-response passage culminating in the measure at m. 105. This is the final exclamation before the modulation up a step at m. 107 where the jubilant main theme is re-established. The ending (m. 127) with accented brass along with woodwind trills is played aggressively, leading to the exuberant final ensemble figure at mm. 131–132.
About the Composer
Alan Lee Silva is a composer and arranger whose credits include orchestration for televi-sion’s popular 7th Heaven and Eight Simple Rules, arrangements for feature and television movies Enough and Soul Collector, and scores for independent films Eli’s Coming, State of the Artist, and The Studio. He has arranged for an eclectic mix of artists ranging from Broadway’s Susan Egan to the Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra to Disney’s California Adventure Theme Park to the rock group KISS. His pieces have been performed by some of Hollywood’s finest studio musicians, and his strong melodic style and contemporary harmo-nies are influenced by the music of Aaron Copland, Dave Grusin, and Jerry Goldsmith.
Alan earned a BA in jazz composition and performance from San Jose State University. He then went on to study at the acclaimed Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, where he later taught composing, arranging and keyboard. His contemporary jazz piece The Flight recorded on the Burning Bridges CD Forethought, became a favorite on San Francisco radio stations. He has worked proofreading film and television scores in the music libraries of 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Paramount Pictures.
Alan’s compositions reflect his belief that music at all levels must be melodically strong in order to be both satisfying to the listener and engaging to a young musician. Alan lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters.

The Carl Fischer Performance Series for Band has five performance levels to provide you with a highly focused repertoire for your band. Each level has been carefully designed and graded, within specific guidelines, so that each piece in a level will work with your band when it achieves that level. Each level is also color coded for ease in finding the series that will be appropriate for your band, as it develops.
Within each grade level, you will find selections in a variety of styles and genres designed to meet all of your performance and teaching needs. The Carl Fischer composers and arrangers are some of the most respected writers in the business. Their music is dynamic, fresh and eminently worthy of your attention.
Concert Performance Series• Expanded instrumentation to 2 Flute, 3 Clarinet, 3 Trumpet, 2 Horn and
2 Trombone parts• Expanded use of rhythms, ranges, keys, but technical demands are still carefully
