• The University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team (16-15 overall) will take on No. 1-seeded Loyola on Friday at noon in the quarterfinals of the 2018 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Tip is set for just after noon (CT) at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. Mitch Holthus (play-by-play), Kevin Lehman (analyst) and Tom Ackerman (sideline) will call the contest.

LOYOLA SWEPT SEASON SERIESLoyola scored a pair of wins over UNI in the regular season. The Ram-blers topped the Panthers, 56-50, in the McLeod Center on Jan. 7, 2018. Loyola then tallied a 70-47 won over UNI at Gentile Arena on Jan. 28, 2018.

UNI AS 9 SEED AT ARCH MADNESSThis marks the second time that UNI has been the No. 9 seed for the State Farm MVC Tournament. The Panthers are 1-1 as No. 9 seed hav-ing picked up a 60-50 victory over Evansville on Thursday. The No. 9 seed has gone 14-22 since the tournament moved to St. Louis, while the No. 8 seed has gone 9-28.

LOOKING TO SET A STANDARDWith a victory on Friday, UNI would become the highest seed (No. 9) to reach the MVC Tournament semis. The previous lowest seed to advance to the MVC Tournament semifinals was the No. 7-seeded Bradley Braves in 1998. The Braves beat No. 10 seed Drake in the

opening round and then knocked off No. 2 seed Creighton in the quar-terfinals. Bradley fell to No. 3 seed Missouri State in the semifinals.

In 2010, UNI gave up 132 points (44.0 ppg) in winning the title with victories over Drake (55-40), Bradley (57-40) and Wichita State (67-52). DEFENSE LOCKED IN VS ACESUNI turned up its defense in a 60-50 win over Evansville Thurs-day in the MVC opening round matchup. The Panthers held Evans-ville’s Ryan Taylor, the MVC’s leading scorer at 22.1 points per game, to two points on 1-for-13 shooting from the field. UNI limited Evansville to 2-of-14 shooting from 3-point range in the victory. The Panthers tied a sea-son-high with seven blocked shots.

RHODES IS ROCK SOLIDSince entering the starting lineup vs. Evansville on Feb. 13, senior guard Hunter Rhodes is averaging 10.4 points per game and has handed out a team-high 15 assists. Rhodes is shooting 92.6 percent at the free throw line (25-of-27) on the season.

CARLSON NABBED ALL-MVC TOURNEY HONORS IN 2016Klint Carlson averaged 11.3 points per game and 4.7 re-bounds per game and was also named to the 2016 MVC All-Tournament Team. Carlson scored a then ca-reer-high 17 points in the MVC title game win over Evansville. Carlson scored nine points and grabbed a career-high nine re-bounds in UNI’s 57-52 overtime win over Wichita State.

UNI head coach Ben Jacobson personifies class and dignity on and off the floor as the leader of the Panther men’s basketball team. Following the 2016-17 season, Ja-cobson was awarded a two-year contract extension that will run through March 31, 2027. Jacobson, 47, is the UNI men’s bas-ketball program’s all-time wins leader with 250 victories in 12 seasons. He has guided the Panthers to four NCAA Tour-nament appearances and four NCAA vic-tories. He is also a three-time MVC Coach of the Year award recipient. Jacobson has guided the Panthers to postseason play in seven of his 11 sea-sons as head coach, including four trips to the NCAA Tournament (2009, 2010, 2015 and 2016). UNI reached the Sweet 16 in 2010 following wins over UNLV and No. 1-ranked Kansas. UNI has recorded at least one victory in each of its last three NCAA Tournament appearances. UNI has placed in the upper half of the MVC standings in 14 straight seasons.Jacobson has guided UNI to a top-four finish in the final MVC standings in nine consecutive seasons. He is the only coach in the history of the MVC to have recorded two wins over two different No. 1-ranked teams (Kansas, North Carolina). A native of Mayville, N.D., Jacobson graduated from Mayville-Portland High School in 1989 as valedictorian. He re-ceived his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of North Dakota in 1994. Jacobson and his wife, Dawn, have two children, Hunter (14) and Tanner (12).

FRIEDMAN, LOHAUS NAMED TO SCHOLAR-ATHLETE TEAMSenior Ted Friedman and junior Wyatt Lohaus were each named to the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference’s Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete honorable men-tion squad. It marks the third straight season that Friedman (Ankeny, Iowa) has earned a spot on the scholar-athlete team. He be-comes the fifth different UNI Panther men’s basketball stu-dent-athlete to be a three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete. Friedman holds a 3.97 cu-mulative grade point average with a triple major – econom-ics, finance, psychology. He has appeared in 21 games and made one start this season. Friedman scored a season-high seven points vs. Missouri State this past Saturday in his first start of the season. Friedman recorded two dunks and drilled a three-pointer in the closing sec-onds ouf UNI’s 71-56 win over the Bears in the McLeod Center. Lohaus (North Liberty, Iowa) is a two-time MVC scholar-ath-lete recipient having earned second-team honors in 2016. Lohaus owns a 3.33 cumulative

GPA in movement and exercise science. Lohaus has played in 22 games this season and ranks No. 4 on the team in scoring (9.2 ppg). QUITE A SENIOR DAYThe UNI Panthers sent the 2018 senior class out in style on Senior Day with a 71-56 victory over the Missouri State Bears. UNI’s starting lineup fea-tured three seniors and all three stepped up when needed. Senior Klint Carlson scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Carl-son was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Senior Ted Friedman tallied a season-high seven points. Friedman recorded a pair of dunks and drained a three-point-er in the closing seconds of the victory. Friedman stuffed his stat sheet with an assist, a block and a steal. Senior Hunter Rhodes drained a season-best three 3-pointers and scored 14 points to go along with a team-high tying four assists. Senior Bennett Koch sat out the game with an ankle injury that he suffered earlier in the week in a win at Valparaiso. Koch was honored prior to the game with a basketball to com-memorate his 1,000 career points for the Panthers.

ROAD LOSING STREAK CUREUNI snapped its 11-game road losing streak with a 68-63 win at Valparaiso (Feb. 20). It marks the fifth time in pro-gram history that UNI has snapped a road losing streak of eight games or more at Valparaiso. UNI snapped a 15-game road losing streak in the 1982-83 season at Valparaiso. UNI ended a nine-game road losing streak at Valpo in 1983-84. The Panthers halted another eight-game road losing streak at Valpo in 1985-86. The Panthers stopped a 10-game road losing skid at Valpo in 1987-88.

HOT SHOOTING AT VALPOUNI recorded its highest field goal percentage shooting night of the season in a 68-63 win at Valparaiso. UNI drained 55.3 percent (21-of-38) of its shots at Valpo. It’s the highest UNI has shot in a game since the Panthers made 56.9 percent of their shots against Drake in a 79-60 win on Jan. 15, 2017, in the McLeod Center. in back-to-back contests to close the regular season. It marks the first time UNI has shot 50 percent or better in two consecutive games since the start of the 2016-17 season. UNI shot 52.6 percent vs. Coe (Nov. 12, 2016) and followed it up by shooting 50.9 percent vs. Arizona State (Nov. 17, 2016) in Orlando, Florida. UNI’S STREAK OF 9 OR MORE MVC WINS SNAPPEDUNI’s streak of 14 straight seasons with nine or more league wins has been snapped after the Panthers dropped their 10th MVC game of the season at Drake (Feb. 10). The league’s current longest streak of nine or more wins is now Illinois State with five.

UNI has posted a trio of perfect home seasons since moving to NCAA Division I. UNI was a perfect 14-0 in both the 1983-84 and 2009-10 seasons and then UNI notched a 15-0 mark at home in 2014-15. UNI set its home-court win streak of 21 consecutive victories between the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons. The McLeod Center opened in November 2006.

CARLSON TALLIES 4TH CAREER 20-POINT GAMESenior forward Klint Carlson reg-istered his fourth career 20-point scoring game at Illinois State (Feb. 17). Carlson drained 7-of-11 field goals and was 2-of-4 from three-point range against the Redbirds. Carlson also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds at Redbird Arena.

SECOND-MOST TRIPLES ALLOWEDIllinois State drained 15 three-point-ers in a 79-75 victory over UNI on Feb. 17. It ties for the second-most three-pointer made by an opponent in school history. He tallied four rebounds and handed out an assist in the Panther victory. Lohaus followed that up with a team-high 17-point performance Saturday at Drake. Lohaus was 6-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-8 from distance against the Bulldogs. For the week, Lohaus was 13-of-23 from the field, which included 10-of-17 from three-point range.

KOCH’S EFFICIENCY VS DRAKESenior Bennett Koch has been a model of efficiency against Drake the last two seasons in the McLeod Center. field and scored 21 points in a 79-60 Panther win. Over the last two seasons at home vs. Drake, Koch has shot 15-of-19 from the field and averaged 20.0 points per game.

TWO FRESHMEN WITH 20 PTSFor the first time since Jan. 28, 1987, UNI had a pair of freshmen each score 20 points in a game. Tywhon Pickford (23 points) and Austin Phyfe (20 points) each went for 20 points in UNI’s 81-76 win over Valparaiso on Saturday. Pickford and Phyfe are the first pair of Panther freshmen to both score 20 or more points in the same game since Maurice Newby (31 points) and Jason Reese (23 points) performed the feat in a 99-79 win over Northern Illinois in the UNI-Dome.

GOING YOUNGOf UNI’s 81 points against Valpara-iso, the Panthers underclassmen accounted for 77 percent of the scoring with 62 points, which in-cluded 18 of UNI’s 22 field goals (82 percent). The underclassmen also ac-counted for 75 percent of the team’s rebounds with 30 caroms.

THE YOUNG SHALL LEADA trio of underclassmen stepped up at Indiana State on Jan. 10 for the Panthers in sophomore Isaiah Brown and true freshmen Austin Phyfe and Tywhon Pickford. Brown stuffed his stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Brown made 6-of-11 shots from the field as he played a career-high 39 minutes. Phyfe buried both of his field goal attempts and scored six points to go with three rebounds in 11 minutes against the Sycamores. Freshman Tywhon Pickford matched his then career-high scoring with 18 points and seven rebounds against the Sycamores. Pickford tied the game at 67-67 on a layup with :10.6 seconds left after a steal from sophomore point guard Juwan McCloud.

KOCH EARNS MVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORSUNI senior Bennett Koch has earned the Missouri Valley Conference’s men’s basketball player of the week honor. Koch (Ashwaubenon, Wiscon-sin) scored a career-high 30 points and led UNI to a 77-68 overtime victory over UNLV. Koch made 10-of-19 field goals and was 10-of-13 from the free throw line against the previously undefeated Runnin’ Rebels. UNI trailed by three points with under a minute to play in regula-tion, when Koch scored in the post with :49.7 left. Koch then sent the game to overtime by making a free

throw with :18.4 remaining. Koch’s dunk with 1:49 left in overtime gave UNI a 68-63 lead. He buried two free throws with :11.5 left to close out the scoring. Koch also grabbed seven re-bounds and posted three steals.

Pickford averaged 12.7 points and 12.3 rebounds per game in the three contests. He pulled down 10 offensive rebounds in the tour-nament. Pickford also went for 18 points and 18 rebounds vs. North Carolina State. It marked the first 18-rebound performance by a UNI Panthers since David Gruber went for 18 rebounds against Montana on Nov. 22, 2002. McCloud led the Panthers in scoring at 13.0 points per game. He also handed out a team-high 10 assists and tallied four steals.

SPENCER SPARKS WIN VS SMUUNI sophomore guard Spencer Haldeman sparked the Panther victory over SMU by draining four 3-pointers and scoring 15 points off the bench.

PAIR OF DOUBLE-DOUBLESBennett Koch and Tywhon Pickford each posted double-doubles against Alcorn State. Koch earned his third career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds vs. the Braves. Pickford secured his first colle-giate double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds vs. the Braves.

The last time UNI had two players record double-doubles on the same night came back on March 2, 2013, when Jake Koch (18 pts./11 rbs.) and Seth Tuttle (15 pts./12 rbs.) did it against Illinois State.

UNI INKS TOP-100 RECRUIT GREENUniversity of Northern Iowa head men’s basketball coach Ben Ja-cobson has announced the signing of consensus top-100 recruit A.J. Green to a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Panthers beginning in the 2018-19 season. Green (6’4”, 175 lbs., Guard – Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls HS) is ranked among the top-100 re-cruits by ESPN (No. 74), 247 (No. 77), Scout (No. 77) and Rivals (No. 88). He is a four-star recruit and a first-team all-state pick by the Iowa Newspaper Association in both 2016 and 2017. “A.J. has a tremendous work ethic and drive to be the absolute best. It has been a lot of fun watch-ing him work and grow as player over the course of all these years,” Jacobson said. “In A.J., we are getting a player who knows our pro-gram, comes in with lofty goals and has made himself one of the best players in the country. Most impor-tantly we are getting a terrific young

guy. This is an exciting day for our basketball family and for Panther Nation as A.J. officially becomes a Panther.” Green set the Cedar Falls High School scoring mark Jan. 16, 2018, with 1,435 points. Green averaged 21.5 points per game and grabbed 4.2 rebounds per game, while he shot 47.4 percent from the floor (43.4 – 3-point range) as a junior. He averaged 17.8 points per game and made 44 percent of his three-point shots as a sophomore. Green scored 186 points and averaged 8.0 points per game as a freshman. Green played AAU basketball for the Iowa Barnstormers. He is the son of Kyle and Michele Green.

PANTHERS RETURN TO PARADISE JAM IN 2018The 2018 U.S. Virgin Islands Par-

adise Jam will return to the U.S. Virgin Islands, tournament directors announced Wednesday, after the 2017 edition of the annual event was relocated to the mainland Unit-ed States due to hurricane damage last September. The 19th annual event will be held at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas, Nov. 16-24, 2018, and play host to 16 Division-I men’s and women’s basketball teams. The men’s Paradise Jam be-gins Friday, Nov. 16 and continues through Monday, Nov. 19. The tournament field includes Eastern Kentucky, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Missouri, Northern Iowa, Old Dominion, Oregon State, and Penn. Old Dominion returns to the tourna-ment for a fourth time, after claim-ing the tournament title in 2010. Eastern Kentucky, Kansas State, and Northern Iowa also return to St. Thomas after previously participat-ing in the tournament. This will mark UNI’s third ap-pearance in the Paradise Jam. UNI competed in the event in 2009 and 2013.
