“The Chinese proverb goes: One picture is worth a thousand words. If that is true, then The Creative Company represents hundreds of thousands of words. Of all the publishers in the world, this company is in love with the metaphor, the picture, the symbol that represents scores of multiples of truths.” – Ray Bradbury The history of The Creative Company began in 1932, alongside the Minnesota River. Founded in Mankato, Minnesota, the company was named The Creative Educational Society, and we started humbly enough. As a fledgling company, we produced maps and diagrams for teachers and students, offered chalk game sets called Pla-Boards, and issued a set of rubber stamps called the Creative Pictured Printer. Today, we have almost 3,500 books to our credit and more than 75 years of publishing experience behind us. We are now The Creative Company, expanded to include three distinct imprints. Creative Editions, founded in 1992, publishes picture books globally hailed for their innovation. Creative Education connects the company to its nonfiction roots with the annual publication of more than 110 titles for schools and libraries. And Creative Paperbacks, which this catalog proudly represents, encompasses the finest fiction and nonfiction that The Creative Company offers. Our paperback program, in particular, reflects a commitment to engage reluctant readers with: • Award-winning graphics and photography • Captivating prose that entertains and educates • Topics of interest to young readers—from sports to animals to vehicles It is true, much has changed about our company since 1932. But much remains the same. We are still in Mankato next to the Minnesota River. The images of our original rubber stamps still adorn our envelopes. We still publish books recognized the world over for their beauty and enduring educational value. And we remain as dedicated as ever to producing materials of all kinds that both teach and inspire. – Tom Peterson, Publisher

Lucas
One day, in the snow-covered isolation of Nova Scotia, a young man
sets out on a hike through the wintry woods with his dog, Lucas. When
he loses his way, and as darkness gathers and temperatures plummet,
Lucas becomes his only chance for survival. Celebrated artist Etienne
Delessert illustrates this dramatic story of friendship.

Rose Blanche
A young girl named Rose Blanche watches as the streets of her town fill
with German soldiers and tanks. Then, one day, she follows a truck into
the woods, where she discovers a terrible secret. This acclaimed book,
illustrated by Hans Christian Andersen Award winner Roberto Innocenti,
contrasts the innocence of childhood with the horrors of war.

Tuba Lessons
In this nearly wordless book, a young boy with a tuba sets out through
the woods for his music teacher’s house. Along the way, he finds
himself making music with playful rabbits, foxes, squirrels … and even
a scary bear. The brilliant artwork of Monique Felix makes
this one lesson that every kid will want to take.

Poetry Basics
Poetry need not be complicated. In fact, some
of the most time-honored forms of this
creative writing style are intended largely for
children. This series combines colorful illus-
trations with accessible example poems and
fundamental analysis to introduce readers to
the simplicity of haiku, humor of limericks,
“music” of nursery rhymes, and imaginative
forms of concrete poetry. Each book concludes
with “Think Like a Poet” exercises.
