’TIS THE GIFT TO BE SIMPLE

The Shaker hymn describes a circular journey from innocence to innocence with characteristic brevity: ’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free. ’Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be.

This journey is easier sung about than done. It takes humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles, positions of honor, money, and power are not requirements of the kingdom of God. Jesus says and demonstrates in today’s Gospel that members of God’s kingdom must hold in their embrace the most inconsequential of persons, for that person is identified with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to the intuition of the world of Jesus’ time, as it does in ours.

The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the shedding of unnecessary, unimportant, false, and burdensome attachments that earthly power demands. Membership in the Kingdom is light enough to put a song in our heart. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PECIAL COLLECTION

We are holding a month-long Angel Fund Drive for the St. Patrick School Angel Fund. This fund is used by families sending their children to our school who need financial assistance. We are very fortunate that we have had an anonymous donor come forth for this collection. All money collected for the Angel Fund on this date will be matched up to a total of $15,000 and to this date there has been $3,213.00 donated! Please be generous as you help the families of our Parish who want to give their children an excellent Catholic education in our own school. Please note “Angel Fund” on your donation and drop off at the school, in the collection basket, or at the parish office.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY This Sunday, September 20, 2015, the Church is celebrating Catechetical Sunday focusing on the theme "Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person." Those whom the parish community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned at the 10:30 am Mass for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

This year’s theme reminds us that the dignity of each human person rests in the biblical teaching (Gen 1:26-27) that he or she is made in God’s image and likeness. It also reminds us that we the baptized may need to actively support and protect others from all sorts of harm, cherishing human life from the moment of conception to a natural death. FAMILY PROMISE MINISTRY An organizational meeting for the Family Promise ministry being implemented at St. Patrick Parish will be held on Thursday, September 24, at 7:00 p.m., in the school cafeteria. Purpose of this meeting is to provide additional information about Family Promise and to form volunteer committees for the ministry.

All those interested in participating in Family Promise are encouraged to attend. Final assignments and needs for the ministry will be discussed in greater detail at this meeting. Family Promise is an interdenominational outreach that helps “to bring about real change for families who have lost their homes” and have no other options for food and shelter. Please consider becoming a part of this important and necessary ministry! For more information, please contact Deacon Joe and Lisa Cerenzia at 724-747-1199 or email: [email protected].

You’re the Key to Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible!

Come join us for an inspiring journey into a better understand-ing of God’s Word and influence contained within the Sacred Scripture. “Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible” is described as making “the complex simple by uncovering the story woven throughout the Scripture,” and revealing “the Bible as a story about the Father’s unfailing love for us, a love that we are called to share with others.”

An eight-part series, which includes a 30 minute video each week, Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible will be offered at St. Patrick Parish beginning on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the St. Patrick Center and for consecutive Wednesday evenings until November 18. Cost is $20 per person. To register or for more information, please contact the parish office at 724-745-6560. Remember, you’re the key to unlocking the Bible’s meaning in your life and Catholic faith!

Catechists - It is possible to obtain continuing education credits from the Diocese of Pittsburgh by attending this bible study. Please contact Carol Serbak for more details by calling 724.745.3787.

There will be a second collection taken at all masses next weekend, September 26/27 for the St. Patrick Chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Your donations will contribute to the outreach and support that they provide to the poor in our local community. Please be as generous as possible.

The first two weeks of school have gone well. Between the daily classroom work on the part of the students and teachers, the evening PTG/Open House meeting, and the 90 degree temperatures school is in full force! As I sit here and write this article, the temperature has actually gone down so relief has arrived! Please remember that the Ladies Tea is on October 11 and we would love to have many, many mothers and daughters attend. This is open to everyone!

Our second grade teacher told me that she involved the students in class rules. They were to decide on one that the whole class could abide by every day! There were a number of suggestions. One of the suggestions that was a favorite among the children was to “Not Permit Any Swearing in Second Grade.” Gee, someone in that class must think they swear like wild sailors! Though Mrs. Gallagher decided that this particular rule wasn’t needed right now, I am sure she will keep her ears open!
