Pope Francis to Diplomatic Corps: Uphold human rights, defend family 1-08-2018 Vatican News Pope Francis addresses members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See, call-ing for the defense of life and support for families, and migrants. Speaking to members of the Diplomatic Corps on Monday, Pope Francis devoted this New Year's address to the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was adopted 70 years ago. The Pope told the dignitaries gathered that from a Christian perspective, there was a significant relationship between the Gospel message and the recognition of human rights in the spirit of those who drafted the document. Human rights 70 years on Quoting from St John XXIII’s 1963 encyclical Pacem in Terris, essentially the Church’s own declaration on Human Rights, the Holy Father noted that relations between nations, like all human relationships, “must likewise be harmonized in accordance with the dictates of truth, justice, willing cooperation, and freedom”. The Pope commented that, “at a dis-tance of seventy years, it was painful to see how many fundamental rights continue to be violated today.” Most notably, he said were the innocent children discarded even be-fore they are born, the elderly, who are often cast aside, women who repeatedly suffer from violence and oppression, even within their own families and the victims of human traffick-ing. Family Another important theme touched on during the Holy Father’s address was that of the fam-ily, telling those present that he considered it urgent, “that genuine policies be adopted to support the family, on which the future and the development of states depend.” Refugees and migrants Focusing on an issue close to his heart, that of migration, Pope Francis emphasized that the ability to leave one’s own country and to return there, was a fundamental human right. He also thanked countries such as Italy, who he said, had “shown an open and generous heart and offered positive examples of integration.” Employment Finally, the Holy Father recalled the importance of the right to employment, underlining that there could be “no peace or development if individuals are not given the chance to contribute personally by their own labour to the growth of the common good.” A cause for particular concern, he said was the increase of child labourers. Concluding his address Pope Francis urged those in public life to cultivate a spirit of ser-vice to humanity and intergenerational solidarity, in order be a sign of hope for a troubled world.

Gracias.”

PRAYER FOR MY FAMILY

Loving God, I offer thanks for the gift of my family. Help us to work together for peace and harmony in

our relationships.

Grant us the grace to accept each other’s faults and weaknesses. Protect us from harsh words and hurt feelings. Assist us to encourage one another’s

strengths and abilities. Lead us to mutual understanding and support.

May we always forgive each other’s failings and rejoice in

one another’s successes.

Watch over my family, Dear Lord. Bless us with good health and happiness. Fill our hearts with love, patience and

kindness for one another, now and always. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Valentine’s Day marks the springtime “Season of Love.” It is quite often a time of renewed romance for couples—a time to start afresh and to renew their love, commitment, and passion for each other. It is a time to let go of the grudges, spats, and battles of the past year. It is a time to re-fuel and re-order the life of marital intimacy. It is also a time for expressions of love—often through the many flowers, diamonds, chocolates and massive teddy bears that fill the stores this time of year. As couples, do you have ideas on how to better your relationship? Do you invest everyday on your relationship, but the harder you work, the more it slips between your fingers? Do you make a sincere effort to bring your relationship on track, but it drifts away? Are you eager to make use of this February as an opportunity to take your relationship to the next level? Marriage first and foremost is a spiritual relationship. It works best when two people are connected individually to God. If you push the spiritual dimension to the side, you risk wrecking the whole marriage. God who created marriage is the only One that can make it work. You may say, “I don’t have time for spiritual things; I have more pressing issues right now” or “My spouse isn’t interested in spiritual matters.” Smaller concerns are often pressing and urgent, but none are as important as developing your spiritual intimacy. “Two glasses that are empty cannot fill up one another. There must be a fountain

of water outside the glasses, in order that they may have communion with one another. It takes three to make love.” (Fulton J. Sheen)

Consider joining other couples in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in a night of adoration of Christ the King—a night of healing, refreshment and renewal, a night specially designed for couples to not only “spice-up” but transfigure their relationship. Childcare is available with advance reservation.
