From the Desk of Father Steve: The Importance of Leisure, Part III
“Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans.”
-From the Song, “Beautiful Boy” by John Lennon
We might find it odd, perhaps even a bit startling that I am quoting John Lennon in my bulletin article, especially since most quotes I provide are from popes or saints. But I have always liked this particular song lyric because it is so very true, especially in our modern day. As I mentioned in my bulletin article last Sunday, we as an American society are much, much too busy, too harried. We, and our children and grandchildren are so incredibly busy, involved in so many activities, spend so much time with media, that I often wonder how such over-busyness will affect the health (physical, emotional,
psychological, and most important- spiritual) of our people. Last week, I attempted to define what leisure, as understood from the Christian perspective, is and is not. This week, I’d like to lay out the problem- why is being super busy such a bad thing? There are a lot of things that I could say here, but I am going to restrict myself to three. First, allowing ourselves to be so very busy, with little time for rest, relaxation, leisure and prayer can easily cause us to lose focus on what is truly important in our lives. Being busy is certainly not a sin in itself, but it can lead us to sin if we let our busyness and activities take first priority in our lives, rather than our faith, our relationship with God, and our love and service to our family. When we are too busy, then we will be forced to make choices about what we will spend our time on, since we are limited to just 24 hours in a day, and if we are not properly ordered, if we do not have our priorities straight, then it becomes easy to cut out time for prayer, for Mass, for Church activities, for opportunities to grow in our faith, to spend quality time with family. Yes, hockey is important. Yes, basketball, softball, swimming, volleyball, track, music, dance, cheerleading, work, social media; all these things are important. But none of those things that I just mentioned, or any other activity, is as important as our relationship with God, and then also our relationship with our family. Period. It’s the very first of the Ten Command-ments: “I am the Lord your God: you shall not have other gods besides me.” Anytime we sacrifice going to Mass, praying, spending time with God for other activities, we break the first commandment- we make some thing, some activity as more important than God. Second, being too busy can rob us of our interior peace that God wishes for us to possess. As Christians, we are called by God to place all of our trust, hope, and faith in Him, and spending time with Him in prayer, receiving the sacraments, having our priorities straight- these things will lead us to possessing an interior sense of peace and tranquility. Not that we won’t get upset, overwhelmed or sad from time to time, but there will be a peacefulness about us that allows us to stay grounded with a sense of identity as God’s child who is loved unconditionally. Being overly busy without carving out adequate time for leisure, prayer and rest will lead to us feeling more and more discombobulated, spiritually speaking (as well as physically, emotionally and psychologically). When we are too busy, the time that we do pray will be more difficult, more distracted, less peaceful. It may be harder to see the value in prayer since prayer is not about results but about relationship. We often hear it said, “I just want peace in my life!” The ironic thing is, we can receive that gift of peace, but we have to be willing to do the work of saying “no” to certain activities and things that would otherwise make us too busy. Finally, being too busy is dangerous to our spiritual health because often people use busyness as a way of avoiding God and avoiding having to deal with confronting God and themselves. God wants to heal us, to forgive us, to invite us to a deeper friendship with Himself, but in order to do that, we have to be willing to face ourselves, our failures, our past mistakes and sins, our weakness and our shortcomings and turn them over to God and His mercy and allow ourselves to grow in virtue. And I honestly believe that for a lot of people, they keep themselves so very busy as a way of distracting themselves from having to answer to God and to themselves. It’s a coping mechanism so that they don’t have to think about or deal with past sins and mistakes, present failures or difficulties, or fears and anxiety about the future. It’s easier to just keep busy and not focus on those difficult things. But while it may seem easier, it’s not spiritually healthy. Doing that will keep our relationship with God on the surface, superficial, and will not allow it to deepen and grow. We do ourselves a disservice when we refuse to let God heal us. Next week, I’ll discuss a game plan for carving out time for proper leisure. God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve
Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris
Fire severely damaged Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on April 15, 2019. This structure has been a welcoming place of worship and pilgrimage for more than eight centuries. The impact of the fire on the faithful of the city and the world is immense and the full extent will not be known for some time. If you wish to support the rebuilding of this historic structure dedicated to Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary, visit www.SupportNotreDame.org where you can make a personal donation. Proceeds will be used to support the Cathedral of Notre Dame and those affected by this tragedy.

Cemetery Help

Cassi’s Corner
Last Sunday as students were being confirmed, the
songs of the choir being so beautifully sung in Latin
stood out to me. Knowing they used Latin because it
is the language of the Church, I started considering
why the Church has an official language. Consider the
time of Hellenization, when the Greeks were the
world power, and they required everyone speak the
same language and worship the same gods. The pur-
pose was to unify the vast lands and people into one
shared culture. It’s easy then to make the leap that
when the Church opened up liturgy to being spoken
in the language of the people of each area, there still
needed to be a shared culture among all Catholics.
This culture includes the prayers of the Church, the
liturgical seasons, songs, and a common language.
One common language serves a practical purpose as
well, official Church documents all being in Latin
removes confusion of meanings especially because it
is a “dead” language. This is a great gift! While active
languages are constantly changing or certain words
lose potency from overuse, “dead” languages retain
the fullness of when they stopped being used for
common use. It’s preserved. In a sense, it keeps our
heritage, our culture, secure.
