I want to wish you all the very best during this wonderful season – the best exam grades, the best time with your loved ones, and the best rest and relaxation during the break. You have worked hard during this semester, learned a bunch, and you are one semester closer to achieving your career goals. The faculty and staff are thankful that we have had the opportunity to work with such a terrific group of people – our students. Your ”aha” moments, your willingness to stretch to learn, your caring for your patients, your energy and creativity, make it worthwhile for us to come to work each and every day. We are thankful for the opportunity to work with you.

Happy Holidays! See you next year.

Dr. Protas, SHP Dean

SPECIAL HOLIDAY EDITION 2015 2

"A Cough, an Infant and Immunizations: A Personal Story"

The spring before I entered PA school, I welcomed a healthy baby boy. At

three weeks old, he developed a small cough. It was subtle at first. “It’s

okay…it’s just a little cold,” I thought as I patted him gently. A day later,

his cough was gasping, deeper sounding, and I was trying to appear calm

as I watched my pediatrician move her stethoscope along his impossibly

small body. His lungs were still clear, but she wanted to treat him

aggressively. “When I hear a cough like that in a baby that small, I worry

about pertussis.”

Pertussis. The scourge of generations of children until the mid-1900s but

now preventable by a simple series of vaccines. Those miraculous shots

can prevent 42,000 deaths and 20 million illnesses if we just adhere to

their recommended administration, but the first pertussis vaccine isn’t

given until two months of age. My infant son depended on herd

immunity to keep him pertussis-free. But herd immunity is increasingly

failing us as more parents refuse or delay vaccinations for their children.

I watched nearly every breath my son took for the better part of three days as he steadily improved until the cough was

gone.

A year and a half later I found myself in my pediatric rotation in League City, with Dr. Kokab Saeed, a seasoned clinician

and one of the greatest advocates for vaccines and preventive health care I have ever known. In my first days, as I

presented sore throats and ear infections to her, she would nod quietly and ask, “Where’s the vaccine record?”

Confused, I would reiterate that this was a sick visit, not an annual check-up, but she would patiently explain: every

patient interaction is a chance to ensure children are up-to-date on vaccines and well child visits. Here for an earache?

Did you ask about the flu shot? Sports Physical? Did you discuss HPV?

A dozen times a day I would find myself asking about vaccines, explaining them, advocating for them, and administering

them to wiggly and nervous children of all ages. I shared my story about my son with hesitant parents, and gently

encouraged highly resistant parents to keep having the vaccine conversation. Rampant misinformation about perceived

vaccine harms persist, and correcting these misperceptions is difficult and time-consuming. But addressing vaccine

preventable illness at every patient interaction, as Dr. Saeed taught me to do, helps healthcare providers continue to

state their case. The raw fear that a vaccine-preventable illness might have taken my child has never left me. I now feel

it is my mission to work to prevent any child from a suffering an avoidable illness because of misinformation and

misplaced fears.

The Alpha Eta Society is a national scholastic honor society for the allied health professions. The purpose of the society is the promotion and recognition of scholarship, leadership, and contributions to these professions. Eligibility for the Alpha Eta Honor Society is contingent on maintaining an exceptional GPA as well as faculty recommendations. Every year, an Alpha Eta member from each program is awarded a scholarship to honor their commitment to the ideals of the Alpha Eta Honor Society. The award distinguishes Alpha Eta members who have been recognized by their faculty as remarkable students who maintain the values set forth by the Alpha Eta bylaws. Pictured is this year’s Physician Assistant Studies Alpha Eta Scholarship recipient, Brandi Dyess. With her is Dr. José Rojas of the Respiratory Care department. Dr. Rojas has been the president of the Alpha Eta Honor society since 2013. It is his belief that each student and faculty member of the UTMB Alpha Eta chapter upholds the society motto: “Together We Serve.” Congratulations to all of the individuals who received the Alpha Eta Society scholarship this year!
