Tell us a little about your business… The newly revamped Pier is a vibrant restaurant/bar situated on the historic Steamer Wharf. With arguably the best waterfront views in Queenstown We serve up some of New Zealand’s finest meat and seafood for brunch/lunch and dinner. We wanted to create a venue where you can experience great locally sourced food and drink in a relaxed and friendly environment.
As a long serving outlet of L’affare in one of the most tourist-driven towns in New Zealand, how do you find the feedback from such a diverse market? L’affare has always been a winning coffee for us across a diverse market. It’s hard to find something that is going to please absolutely everyone, but L’affare delivers a coffee that suits a broad range of tastes.
Are you happy with the quality of L’affare coffee? L’affare continues to deliver a good, consistent coffee that is enjoyed by many and gets the Pier team through some busy summer days/nights.
How do you find the ordering system and service of Aitkens and its L’affare team? The ordering system works well for us as we have little storage and need multiple deliveries each week. The training provided by the L’affare team is fantastic, and Alison from the Dunedin office always goes the extra mile to help us out in the event of a coffee emergency.
What’s the most OTT coffee order you’ve had? Probably not the most OTT but certainly the most ridiculous order we’ve received is an ‘extra hot espresso’. And it’s happened more than once!
Can you pinpoint a difficulty particular to your business you are working to overcome? Trying to keep up with the needs of an ever-increasing tourist market.
What is your favourite dish/drink on the current menu? One of our favourite dishes here is our ‘Salmon Florentine’. Fresh South Island smoked salmon, wilted greens, homemade rustic potato rosti, perfect poachies, and topped off with house made hollandaise – it’s always a hit with our customers. Our favourite drink would have to be our take on the Espresso Martini – you can’t go wrong ordering one of these!

Domaine is made with fully tempered glass offering up to 5 times more resistance to breakages than untreated glass. It is heat and shock resistant, but will break into blunt fragments if shattered. You’ll also note the stem and curvature to the foot of this glass is designed to suit everyday use. It features a sensible beaded rim, but doesn’t distract from an updated shape. Tell us about the 3 segments of the Country Lane Group? The Country Lane Group is all about hospitality. Our brands are contemporary and on trend, leading with ‘The Social Platter Co.’ one of Christchurch’s leading platter based companies, where our foundation is ‘social foods’. Country Lane Catering is about precision and food excellence. Our luxury lodge is contemporary and a haven for both local and international guests. Our newest addition, Suburban Eatery, is a contemporary café during the day and a casual Asian-fusion dining restaurant at night. Based in the heart of rural Canterbury, we pondered over a couple of locations but are so pleased we chose Leeston, which is also the new location of our production kitchen.
What’s the most recent item you purchased through Aitkens? Good question. We used Aitkens for every aspect of our fit-out at Suburban Eatery. They set us up with all of our tableware and kitchenware, and supplied us with brand new equipment and stainless steel fabrication for our commercial kitchen. In regards to the latest item, we purchased fifteen chrome glass hangers.
Why did you purchase this item? What is its purpose? We were trying to work out the flow of the bar at Suburban Eatery
and glass hangers ended up being the best option. We trialed a few different sizes and made the purchase. We are very happy with the result.
Are you happy with the quality of this product? Absolutely. Very happy with all the items we buy from Aitkens.
How do you find the ordering system and service of Aitkens Christchurch? Where do I start? I think last month was the smallest statement in months! There is a constant need to buy something from Aitkens and now they’re my only go to. Richard Page, our account manager, is amazing. We’re lucky to have such a great partnership.
Can you pinpoint a difficulty particular to your business you are working to overcome? Managing the constant growth and keeping up with the social media. It’s such an important medium for showcasing our product range across all facets of the business. Cross promotion can be a great gain, but it’s no easy task!
What is your favourite dish on the current menu? Definitely the dumplings on the lunch and dinner menu at Suburban Eatery.

THE FUTURE OF GLASSWASHING IS CLEAR
While Starline dishwashers and glasswashers continue to be built in West Auckland as they have been for the last 37 years, the machines themselves have evolved dramatically over this time.
Nothing embodies the recent advancements more than the Starline M2C and ROS high capacity polish-free glasswashing system.
The M2C takes the ever popular M2 dishwasher and adds a Heat Recovery Unit, using the steam to preheat an incoming cold water supply from the ROS 3-stage polish free water filter.
The M2C allows you to run back-to-back 1 minute polish-free glasswashing cycles, while saving you over $1k p.a. money when compared with a conventional passthrough dishwasher.
The polish-free system ensures that your staff spend less time manually polishing glasses and the risk of injury from breakages is reduced, so they can spend more time doing what they do best.
The set up can be completed with a locally made and customable drying table which accelerates the drying of glassware, helping you to get glasses back into storage and/or into use as quickly as possible.

CHRISTCHURCH @redlightdistrictbar 123 Victoria St, ChCh Central To many, Charlie Winston’s of Chelsea is your regular dry cleaning outlet. With the clothes hung and labelled, ready to be whisked away to be cleaned or picked up, you can be forgiven for not knowing that this place is one of the hottest new late night hangouts in town. Unbeknownst to the passing office workers and window shoppers strolling along Victoria Street, there is a secret amongst the freshly pressed pleats. Behind a door at the end of the clothing rail lies The Red Light District cocktail bar. With dim lighting, banked walls of red lights and ornate Chinese artefacts, this opium den-styled cocktail lounge is creating quite the stir amoung the locals.
Its cocktail list is exciting and contemporary with weird infusions, tinctures, tastes and tricks, designed to pull you out of your comfort zone but rewarding you for the leap. Headed by Zac Goy, who recently won Hospitality NZ Up & Coming Bartender of The Year, the drink offerings are unlike any others around. The 36th Chamber appeared last on the cocktail list and immediately made an impact. Now a firm crowd favourite, it’s jostling to become the most popular house creation since the bar’s opening in June 2017. This relatively simple 4-ingredient cocktail has a depth and complexity that is warming and herbaceous. Bar Manager Zac Goy says: “It’s bittersweet with very warming floral notes, but it’s boozy, so be careful ‘cause it’ll sneak up on you.”
