Some Words from our Chaplain
Another Christmas has come and gone, but what now?
What do we take away from this December 25? Do we
return to the normal, the regular, the every day?
“The Work of Christmas,” a poem by Dr. Howard
Thurman reminds us why we stand on the side of love
and justice throughout the year.
“When the song of Christmas is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flocks,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among all,
To make music in the heart.”
Dr. Thurman’s poem reminds me of the words of the
prophet Micah, “What does the Lord require of you but
to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly
with your God.”

Ethical Wills/ Legacy Letters Workshop
with Dr. Lyndal Hare
Thursday, January 25th
3:00 pm - Great Room A
An ethical will is not a legal document. It is not about
money or possessions. Rather an ethical will, or
legacy letter, is a way to share your values, blessings,
life’s lessons, family stories etc. with your family,
friends, and community. Ethical wills are not new.
References to this tradition are found in the Hebrew
and Christian testaments, (Genesis 49, and John15 –
17) and in other cultures as well.
An ethical will/ legacy letter may be one of the most
cherished and meaningful gifts you can leave your
family and community.
If you plan to attend, please call Chaplin Hudson
at ext. 6857.

Discussion Group
Wednesday, January 10th
2:00 pm – Great Room A
Until September 11, 2001, most Americans had
never heard of Al Qaida or Osama bin Laden, but
we learned in a spectacular and deadly fashion. We
responded by launching The War on Terror, now in
its 16th year and by far our longest. Subsequently
another frightening group, ISIS, arose against us and
our Allies, further frustrating the struggle to
eradicate terrorism. Our January discussion will
trace the rise of both groups and what they seek to
accomplish.
All are welcome!

Dancing Health Benefits for Older Adults
The health benefits of dancing for
seniors range from improving your
physical health to creating strong
social connections that increase
your sense of well-being. As you age, your body loses
muscle mass, coordination, and balance, making you
more likely to fall and injure yourself in the course of
everyday activities. Dancing can help counteract this
decline. If you’re a senior searching for a new leisure
activity, consider dancing!
Benefits:
Improve muscle & tone strength
Improve balance, coordination, agility &
flexibility.
Increase aerobic & motor fitness.
Helps to improve mental function & memory.
Helps prevent aging.
Dancing betters your stability & posture.
Most importantly it’s FUN!

Study Update for Residents:
During 2017 Southminster and UNC Charlotte partnered to begin work on the areas first community needs
study focused on older adults in Mecklenburg County. Researchers from the University have been
interviewing a diverse group of elders in Mecklenburg County posing questions in regards to individual
health, programs and services, family caregiving and quality of life. Participants were recruited in
partnership with organizations including public libraries, senior and community centers, churches, long-term
care facilities, YMCA’s and community clinics.
The distribution of collected surveys by race/ethnicity to date is as follows:
Researchers anticipate completing data collection by the end of January 2018. The data will then be analyzed
and prepared for a community report to share the main findings and recommendations regarding the status of
older adults in Mecklenburg County.
“We believe this data will be instrumental in highlighting the need to make older adults and their needs a
priority in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County,” shared Dr. Julian Montoro-Rodriguez, Director of the
Gerontology Program at UNC Charlotte.
Look for an article in the February 2018 issue of Charlotte Magazine with an update on the study. In addition,
an event to bring community leaders and residents together to share results is being planned for late Spring
2018.
Thank you for your continued support in supporting concepts like Meck60+. This type of innovative
community engagement places an emphasis on the quality of life of elders and caregivers in our community.
For more information on Meck60+ please contact Tracy McGinnis, ext.6129.
