MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ. This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and witness. In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in our midst.

KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTS
In the musical Fiddler on the Roof, the husband, Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses’ successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life—a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples’ life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. GUARDANDO NUESTROS COMPROMISOS
En la obra musical El violinista en el tejado, el esposo, Tevye, cuyo matrimonio había sido planificado por otros muchos años atrás, quiere saber si su esposa de veras lo ama. ¿Fue su matrimonio solamente un arreglo, un contrato? Después de tantos años, ¿llegó su mujer a quererlo? ¿Lo quiere todavía? Necesitamos saber si nuestros compromisos son duraderos. Necesitamos que nos lo recuerden y reafirmen. En la primera lectura, Josué, el sucesor de Moisés, necesitaba saber si el
pueblo iba a mantenerse fiel a su alianza con el Señor. Josué iba a llevarlos a una nueva vida –una vida estable. ¿Serían fieles? Jesús, habiéndose identificado como la fuente de vida de sus discípulos, necesitaba saber. ¿Ustedes van a irse también o van a quedarse? Pocas veces vemos a Jesús tan vulnerable. Pedro y los apóstoles escogieron quedarse. ¿Qué vamos a hacer nosotros?

CHRISTIANS IN COMMERCE Challenge Weekend—August 28-29 The workplace is filled with distractions that make it difficult for many of us to recognize our need for God. With this in mind, members of the Christians in Commerce group of St. Lawrence Parish invite men (working or retired) from the parish to attend the upcoming Ecumenical Challenge Weekend to be held at Bayside Church of Citrus Heights, 6540 Sylvan Road, Citrus Heights, CA, on August 28th and 29th, 2015. The Challenge Weekend allows you to look at your life in the context of God’s purpose and plan for his creation and life in general. It provides a unique opportunity for you to learn what God desires for you personally. The Weekend is conducted and sponsored by lay Christians in business, like yourself. The weekend consists of 8 brief talks followed by periods of reflection and small group discussion. There’s an old saying that goes, “Once a Catholic, always a Catholic.” Maybe you have been away from the Church for a little while or for quite some time, but now
you feel a tug at your heart calling you back to the Catholic Church. Listen to that tug. It’s your Heavenly Father reaching his arms out to you, the Holy Spirit whispering in your ear, hoping to draw you home. Classes will be starting on Monday, September 14. Maestro, ¿a quien iremos?
T H E P A S T O R ’ S C O L U M N Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The parallel images that are expressed in the readings today focus on decisions, choices, subordination, and freedom. In the First Reading of Joshua and the Gospel of John, we are being asked to decide which God we will serve—the One True God or some other god. The Israelites were asked “Who will you serve?” Having this question posed was for the purpose of reaffirmation of the covenant between God and his people depending upon the decision or choice that is made by the individual. Joshua was firm in and clear in his decision “he and his family will serve our God.” In the Gospel of John, Jesus revealed himself to his disciples and asks “if they believe his words of spirit and life?” All of the talk and imagery of the “flesh and blood” was a bit much for some of the disciples to accept and as such they choose to leave Christ. We, very much like the disciples are being asked that same question of faith, “do we really believe and, if we believe, will we decide to have complete faith in Christ or do we slumber back to our old ways?” Our life is series of choices and decisions—some easy, others unclear, while some are difficult or unpopular—yet, we cannot move forward as true disciples without a clear and unequivocal decision to choose life through our Redeemer. We always have the freedom to choose—this, Jesus purchased for us with his death and resurrection. His choice for us was definite, is ours? Saint Paul in the Second reading presents the concept of marriage to express his point. Albeit his example is perhaps “very traditional and to some out-of-step with our current attitudes.” The word subordination is typically not seen as a positive concept, yet, I would urge you to consider it under this concept—that subordination really is a mutual love between husband and wife, a true commitment to each other. Just like Jesus and the church, the two become one in Christ but in a love that sustains the two. Here also we are called to choose freely and to believe in His word. Let us, therefore, be faithful to each other and to Christ in our relationship with him—in love of his word and subordinate to his love. On August 8, our parish celebrated its 60th Anniversary and Feast of St. Lawrence. I am thankful to the Ministry Leadership Team, the various ministries that staffed game and food booths, the numerous donations received, the Basket Raffles which were provided by the Ministries, as well as the parishioners and families who attended the celebration. Aside from having a financially successful event (about $10,000), the most gratifying aspect of the celebration was the gathering of our faith-filled community working and having fun together as one

The Saint Lawrence Harvest Craft Fair will be held in St. Lawrence Hall on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Crafters are invited to sign up for your booth to display their wares. We will have booths available inside the hall and outside on the patio. All crafters are welcome. A seller’s license is required. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the event. Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Las imagines paralelas que presentan las lecturas de hoy se enfocan en las decisiones, alternativas, subordinación y libertad.
En la primera lectura de Josué y el evangelio de San Juan, se nos pregunta a cual Dios serviremos–el verdadero Dios o cualquier otro. A los Israelitas se les pregunto a quien servirían. Al hacer esta pregunta marco la pauta para la reafirmación del convenio entre Dios y su pueblo, dependiendo claro de la decisión que cada uno hizo individualmente. Josué se mantuvo firme y claro en su decisión diciendo que “El y su familia servirían al Señor.” En el evangelio de San Juan, Jesús se revela a si mismo a los discípulos y les pregunta si ellos creen en sus palabras de espíritu y vida. La platica acerca de la carne y la sangre fue difícil aceptar para algunos discípulos y prefirieron dejar a Cristo. A nosotros, al igual que a los discípulos se nos hace la misma pregunta hoy, realmente cree-mos, y si creemos nos decidiremos por una fe completa en Cristo o nos regresáremos a ser los de antes. Nuestra vida es una serie de decisiones y alternativas–algunas fáciles, otras no muy claras, algunas difíciles y no comunes–aun así, no podemos llegar a ser verdaderos discípulos sino nos decidimos a escoger la vida a través de nuestro Redentor. Siempre tendremos el libre albedrio–el cual Jesucristo compró para nosotros con su muerte y resurrección. Su decisión por nosotros fue definitiva, ¿es así la nuestra? San Pablo en la segunda lectura nos presenta el concepto del matrimonio para hacer este punto. La palabra subordinación no parece ser un concepto positivo, sin embargo me gustaría que lo consideraras de la siguiente manera: que subordinación es el amor mutuo entre el esposo y la esposa, un compromiso verdadero entre los dos. Como el de Jesucristo y su Iglesia, los dos se hicieron uno en Cristo, en un amor que los sostiene a los dos. Aquí también nosotros estamos lla-mados a escoger libremente y a creer en su palabra. Por lo tanto, seamos fieles los unos a los otros y a Cristo en nuestra relación con El –en el amor a su palabra y subordinado a su amor. El 8 de Agosto, nuestra parroquia celebro su 60⁰ Aniversario y la Festividad de San Lorenzo. Mis más sinceras gracias al Equipo Líder, a los diferentes ministerios que participaron con los juegos, los puestos de comida, las canastas para la rifa y por sus donaciones, también extiendo mis gracias a todas los feligreses y sus familias que celebraron con nosotros. Aparte del suceso económico del evento (se recaudaron aproximadamente $10,000), el aspecto más gratificante de la celebración fue el ver reunida a toda la comunidad trabajando y divirtiéndose junta como una comunidad en Cristo. ¡Gracias San

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Cuando Jesús dice que hay que comer su cuerpo y beber su sangre (Juan 6:55), los cristianos católicos, literalmente, seguimos sus palabras. En esto somos muy fundamen-talistas: cuando Jesús dice que el pan es su cuerpo y el vino es su sangre, lo creemos de todo corazón (1 Corintios 11:24-25). Para los católicos, nuestra fe y estilo de vida están basados en la consagración del pan y vino en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. La Iglesia primitiva reconocía con tristeza que no todos los que querían seguir a Jesús podían aceptar la realidad de su cuerpo y sangre. Por eso, Juan el evangelista dice que muchos abandonaron a Jesús cuando éste les habló del sagrado convite (Juan 6:60-69). De la muchedumbre que le seguía, poquísimos continuaron con él. Quienes siguieron acom-pañándolo reconocían que Jesús tiene palabras de vida eterna. Esta verdad la vemos reflejada en la celebración de la misa, pues del Pan de la Palabra pasamos al Pan Eucarístico. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The ministry of permanent deacons has become an essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost. The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint. Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long‑delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. PRAYER AND LIFE WORKSHOPS Wednesdays Come to a series of 15 workshops. By means of a woven pattern of meditations on the Word, intensive prayer, community reflec-tion and silencing exercises, participants of the workshops will slowly become filled with a peace that surpasses all understanding. Result? Overcoming of complexes, traumas, controlling your nerves, emotion stability and joy of living. The workshops also offers a limited and humble service—teaching you how to pray and to live a Christian life. Each workshop runs for two hours, 7:00—9:00 pm, which began on Wednesday, August 5, in St. Lawrence Classroom No. 3. TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks “Do you also want to leave?” We must ask ourselves if we really want to hear the good news of his love for us and for others. Is the word of God able to break into our consciousness, change us and call us to hear the cries of the poor? As you give your gift to the poor through the St. Lawrence Conference, in your hearts you also will find the good news of God’s love and you will be responding to the word of Christ to help one another. May the Lord of Hosts always radiate in your heart.

VISIT OF POPE FRANCIS - SEPTEMBER 2015
In preparation for the visit of Pope Francis in September the Diocese of Sacramento, including the Community of the St. Lawrence faithful, will show our love and support of the Pope in the following weeks as we plan to:
● Display a banner on the corner of Walerga & Don Julio Blvd. ● Provide weekly inserts in the Bulletin from Pope Francis’ Joy of the Gospel, Evangelii Gaudium for the faithful to read and share with family and friends. ● Distribute prayer cards for the Pope’s visit and the canonization of Junipero Serra. ● The faithful are encouraged to Twitter with all of one of the following hashtags: #popeinphilly, #diocesesacramento, #popeintheus or #wmf2015
Please keep the Pope in your daily prayers that his historic visit to the US be viable, fruitful, and the message of Christ’s vicar be heard as the Father has told us in the Gospels of Jesus, “Listen to Him.”
I encourage individuals, families, and ministries to undertake other activities that will help demonstrate our faith and support of the Pope and canonization of Junipero Serra.
