Balancing Your Budget!

Lent is a good time for it. Each day has 1440 minutes. How much

Time do you spend in idle chatter, texting, and gossip? Spend a few

more minutes each day in prayer, church visits, and scripture reading.

Each week has 168 hours. Budget an extra hour using your Talents

to volunteer, visit the sick, or help the needy. Next: analyze your

Treasure. Can you cut spending on some items and invest more in

support of your Church and Ministries through Offertory Collections. Or

consider special gifts to the Coat of Arms Society or Arc Angel Soci-

ety? Need some advice? Pray to St. Matthew, the Apostle. He was a

tax collector. Although He has our balance sheets, he wants no one to

default. Remember, the Lord is the lender of first and last resort.

His grace and debt forgiveness is bountiful.

God bless!

FEBRUARY 24 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 3

PASTOR´S MESSAGE

Lent has traditionally been a time for spending more time with the

Bible and with the heroes of faith that we find there. This is

particularly appropriate this year as we celebrate the Year of Faith.

During this Year of Faith, we are asked to study our faith as to its teachings

and Tradition and we are also asked to examine the level of our trust in God's

love and mercy: the second component of faith. Both understanding and trust

together expressed in action equals mature faith. The Biblical figures I would

like to recommend for our attention are Peter, James and John, the three

fisherman of Galilee

Why reflect upon Peter, James and John? Recently on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, I had the opportunity to stand on the shores

of the Sea of Galilee and to sail out onto it by a traditional boat. The experience was awesome! .I could so easily visualize the three

apostles setting out to fish, working hard and coming home with nothing (our sailor guides in their fishing demonstration, in fact, caught

nothing). I could also easily imagine Jesus calling to them, challenging their trust and rewarding it with a record catch. I also felt what

it is like to be called to follow Jesus and to leave an old life behind with all of its security, people and possessions. I remembered vividly

the promise to my Bishop that I made thirty-seven years ago when I received a new identity and mission.

For Peter, James and John as for us, faith in Jesus involves both our understanding and our will united in an act of trust. They did

not know what they would have to give up as a follower of Jesus. They did not know where the road that Jesus set out upon would

take them. Scripture only records that: "They left their nets behind and followed after Him". By friendship and time spent together they

would come to know the truth of Jesus and it would set them free. For each of us Lent presents the opportunity to assess what it is that

we have left behind in order to be a Christian? Perhaps the answer will be, nothing. What we face in that case is the challenge to

believe more deeply, risk more courageously or surrender more unconditionally. At the heart of Jesus' preaching was conversion, change

of heart, and change of life-direction. If set out upon with trust like the apostles, this new way of life sets us apart from the herd

mentality and from cultural conformity. To take the gospel of Jesus seriously is to be something of an outsider with values and lifestyle

that do not easily fit with the majority mindset. What we are called to leave behind differs one from the other but there is no journeying

forward without leaving something behind.

For many of us, as was true for the apostles, we have to overcome some obstacles that limit our freedom and surrender to Jesus.

Perhaps there are issues of fear, guilt, attachments, selfishness, pride, distorted image of God, or mindless busyness. Any of these can

prove to be serious obstacles. The "good news" is that these issues can be overcome with the help of Jesus. Perhaps full frontal attacks

are not the way to victory. Maybe we have to find our ways around, over or under the obstacle. In any event, progress is what Jesus

makes possible for us if we combine our knowledge of God with our trusting yes in action that is humble, truthful and generous. Prayer

and discernment of God's will are critical for this journey. We also need to keep reminding ourselves that: "All things are possible for God".

During our parish mission this week, I invite you to determine what it is you must give up and what obstacle you will overcome.

How will each of us become the fishermen and the apostles of today?

- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

The 2013 Diocesan Services Appeal recently launched in parishes across the

Diocese of Palm Beach. There are many ministries and programs supported by

this annual appeal. Because of the DSA, and your generosity, the Diocese can

continue to support the many aspects of our larger Church, including the 53

parishes and missions, and our 19 schools. The DSA is the primary source of

funding for the Diocese, providing more than 70 percent of the annual operating

income. The strength of our diocese comes from us recognizing God’s gifts and

sharing a portion of these gifts for building up the Kingdom of God. Please

contribute to the Diocesan Services Appeal and help us meet our Parish Goal.

As you all know, implementation of Our Journey Forward Strategic Plan has

gradually started. This implementation of our Plan will require the collaboration

THE POWER OF GOD'S GRACE IN US!

It is already the Tradition of the Catholic Church to start the Lenten Season with

the narration about the Temptation of Jesus. He was “led by the Spirit into the

desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil.” It sounds as if the Spirit

himself is courting the devil and putting Jesus in harm’s way.

“Why does God allow us to be tempted?” This is often asks by many

good and honest Christians who, in spite of their intimate personal relationship

with the Lord, go through some of the difficult trials and tribulations in life.

A student once asked the teacher, “Ma’am, why do you give us so many

tests and examinations? We thought you are after our wellbeing but now it

appears that you want us to fail!” “Of course not,” said the teacher.

“The tests and examinations are design to re-enforce your knowledge and

ability. It is also your opportunity to prove to yourselves and to others

what you are capable of.”

Yes, it is true that every temptation carries the danger of falling. Likewise, it

is true that God sees in every temptation an opportunity for redemption and

an occasion to strengthen our faith and trust in the One True God. When

temptation is viewed as a test of character, of will, and of spirit, then we could

come out of it as better person, better Christian.

Every great person had passed in one way or another through the ‘eye of

the needle’. In fact it is a prerequisite for a truly laudable life “so that the

tested genuineness of your faith – more precious than gold that perishes

though it is tested by fire –

may be found to result in

praise and glory and honor

at the revelation of Jesus

Christ” (1PETER 1:7).

Yes, when tempted, we

are confronted by the dangers

of our weaknesses and

limitations. But we are also

faced with the possibility to rise

to new spiritual heights for the

power of God’s amazing grace had already been implanted in our hearts by

Jesus himself. “Then He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy

Spirit” (JOHN 20:22).

The challenge is: What will lead us during this Lent? Will we allow

ourselves to be directed by the cravings of our bodily appetites and the basic

instinct of our emotions? Or will we take the test of character, of will, and of

spirit by heeding God’s higher call for a deeper prayer life, a more significant

personal sacrifices, and unconditional love for the needy?

Jesus Christ is waiting on us. God bless us all!

FEBRUARY 24 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 9

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Saying he no longer has the strength to exercise

ministry over the universal church, Pope Benedict XVI announced Feb. 11

that he would be resigning at the end of the month after an eight-year

pontificate.

"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have

come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no

longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," the pope

told cardinals gathered for an ordinary public consistory to approve the

canonization of new saints.

Pope Benedict, who was elected in April 2005, will be the first pope

to resign in more than 600 years.

He told the cardinals, "In today's world, subject to so many rapid

changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith,

in order to govern the bark of St. Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both

strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few

months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize

my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."

Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, told journalists

at a briefing that the pope's decision was not prompted by any medical

illness, but was due to a natural "decline of strength" associated with

old age.

Even though the announcement had caught almost everybody by

surprise, it was not a snap decision, but rather one that "had matured

over the past few months," Father Lombardi said.

The pope made his announcement in Latin from a pre-written text

during a morning ordinary public consistory where a large number of

cardinals were present.

When he delivered his announcement, the pope seemed very

"composed, concentrated" and read "in a solemn manner" in keeping

with the importance of what he was saying, Father Lombardi said.

Fulfilling the canonical requirement, Pope Benedict solemnly declared

to the cardinals, "Well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full

freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome,

Successor of St. Peter, entrusted to me by the cardinals on 19 April 2005,

in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of

Rome, the See of St. Peter, will be vacant and a conclave to elect the new

supreme pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence

it is."

It is up to the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Angelo

Sodano, to make preparations for a conclave to elect a new pope.

Father Lombardi said after the pope steps down, he will move to the

papal villa in Castel Gandolfo outside of Rome. He will stay there until the

renovation is completed of a cloister, set up by Blessed John Paul II, which

is located inside the Vatican Gardens, he said.

The pope will then live in the cloister, called the Mater Ecclesia

monastery, and dedicate his time to prayer and reflection, the Vatican

spokesman said.

It was likely the pope would keep writing, he added, since the

pope has mentioned many times that he has wanted to spend more time

dedicated to study and prayer.

When asked if there would be any confusion over leadership or a

schism were a possibility, Father Lombardi said he believes the pope

"had no fear of this" happening because he clearly demonstrated his

desire to step down and no longer be pope or retain any papal authority.

"I think in no way is there any risk of confusion or division" in this

respect, he said.

The pope, who is past the age allowed a cardinal to vote for a new

pope, will obviously not be part of the conclave that will convene to elect

his successor, he added.

He is not likely to play any role in the "interregnum" or time between

popes because "there is no role for a predecessor pope" during this period,

the priest said.

The Jesuit priest said a "sedevacante" usually lasts less than a month,

and that it was more than likely a new pope would be elected in time to

lead the full schedule of Holy Week and Easter liturgies.

Cardinal Sodano, who was one of the many cardinals present during

the pope's announcement, addressed the pope, telling him the news left

them with "a sense of loss, almost completely incredulous."

However, it was obvious that his decision was based on a "great

affection" for the well-being of the church, the cardinal said.

Father Lombardi said being a pope today is "much more fast-moving,

more demanding" than it was in the past with an almost nonstop full

schedule of public and private events and liturgical celebrations.

When asked why the pope chose Feb. 11, the feast of Our Lady of

Lourdes, as the day to announce his stepping down, Father Lombardi said

most likely the date was a coincidence, and that the pope instead chose

an event -- the ordinary public consistory -- where a large number of

cardinals would be present.

"The pope chose this significant occasion with the gathered cardinals"

as the best moment to announce his plans, the Vatican spokesman said.

When asked whether the pope had any medical illnesses or bouts of

depression that may have prompted his resignation, Father Lombardi said

the pope was "absolutely not" depressed and possessed a remarkable

"spiritual serenity" and composure despite the many difficult moments he

has had to face as pope.

The Vatican spokesman also said he was not aware of any medical

illness that would have caused the pope to step down, rather it was due

to a "normal" deterioration of physical and mental strength that comes

with old age.

The pope has increasingly had trouble walking in the past year, often

using a cane and always being assisted getting up and down steps.

However, the Vatican has never released medical information that would

make it appear the pope suffers from anything other than joint pain

connected to his age.

The option of a pope to resign is explicitly written into the Code of

Canon Law. It says a pope may step down, but stipulates that the decision

must be made freely and "duly manifested." No one needs to formally

accept a pope's resignation for it to be valid.

The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII in 1415.

Pope Benedict had long said it would be appropriate for a pope to

resign for the good of the church if the pontiff felt he were unable to

physically bear the burden of the papacy.

In his book-length interview, "The Light of the World," with German

journalist Peter Seewald, the pope said, "If a pope clearly realizes that he

is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling

the duties of his office, then he has a right and, under some circumstances,

also an obligation to resign."

The pope told the author that it was important, however, that the

pope "must not run away" and "must stand fast and endure" any difficult

situations that are facing the church. For that reason, he was not thinking

of resigning in 2010 -- the year the interviews were conducted.

"One can resign at a peaceful moment or when one simply cannot

go on," the pope had said.

Before ending his remarks during the consistory, Pope Benedict told the

cardinals: "I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which

you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects.

And now, let us entrust the holy church to the care of our supreme pastor,

our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may

assist the cardinal fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new

supreme pontiff."

The pope said, "I wish to also devotedly serve the holy church of God

in the future through a life dedicated to prayer."

Father Lombardi said he felt "great admiration" for the pope's "great

courage" and "freedom of spirit" in making this decision. The spokesman

said it shows the pope is not only fully aware of the great responsibilities

involved in leading the universal church, but his hopes that "the ministry

of the church be carried out the best way" possible.

POPE BENEDICT XVI ANNOUNCES HIS RESIGNATION

AT END OF MONTH

Pope Benedict XVI on Monday said he plans on resigning the papal

office on February 28th. Below please find his announcement.

Dear Brothers, I have convoked you to this Consistory, not

only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to

you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church.

After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God,

I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an

advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of

the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to

its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with

words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes

and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith,

in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the

Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength

which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the

extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately

fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well

aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare

that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of

Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005,

in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours,

the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a

Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be con-

voked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love

and work with which you have supported me in my ministry

and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the

Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus

Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist

the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a

new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also

devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through

a life dedicated to prayer.

From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

HOW IS A NEW POPE CHOSEN?

In the past, 15 to 20 days after a papal vacancy, the

cardinals gathered in St. Peter's Basilica for a Mass

invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit in electing a new

pope. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible

to vote in a conclave. They are known as the cardinal

electors, and their number is limited to 120. For the

conclave itself, the cardinal electors process to the Sistine

Chapel and take an oath of absolute secrecy before

sealing the doors.

The cardinals vote by secret ballot, processing one by

one up to Michelangelo's fresco of the Last Judgment,

saying a prayer and dropping the twice-folded ballot in a

large chalice. Four rounds of balloting are taken every day

until a candidate receives two-thirds of the vote. The result

of each ballot are counted aloud and recorded by three

cardinals designated as recorders. If no one receives the

necessary two-thirds of the vote, the ballots are burned

in a stove near the chapel with a mixture of chemicals

to produce black smoke.

When a cardinal receives the necessary two-thirds

vote, the dean of the College of Cardinals asks him if he

accepts his election. If he accepts, he chooses a papal

name and is dressed in papal vestments before processing

out to the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. The ballots of

the final round are burned with chemicals producing white

smoke to signal to the world the election of a new pope.

The senior cardinal deacon, currently French Cardinal

Jean-Louis Tauran, announces from the balcony of

St. Peter's "HabemusPapam" ("We have a pope") before

the new pope processes out and imparts his blessing on

the city of Rome and the entire world.

(1) LIVES TOTALLY CHANGED BY KOINONIA RETREAT

“My husband and I had attended St. Joan of Arc Church for almost 20 years, yet

we knew very few people in the Church. One Sunday I was touched when hear-

ing about the upcoming KOINONIA weekend retreat, so we eagerly signed up

that day.

“This weekend retreat CHANGED OUR LIVES! During the retreat, I felt the

hand of Jesus on my shoulder and I felt his unconditional love in my heart. It is

impossible to explain, but I truly look at the world differently today.

“Since then I feel so much LOVE every time I walk into our Church and as I look

around, I am now surrounded by so many people that have become my wonder-

ful friends.”

– Nancy Kissman

(2) VOCATION INVIGORATED BY KOINONIA RETREAT

“Putting our lives on a short hold for the Parish Retreat 2010 took some coordi-

nation with work and family schedules but we were both sensing it was high

time to give it a try. The Lord had been calling.

“We emerged from that KOIKONIA retreat totally refreshed and much eager

for HIS next calling.”

– John and Coralie Stoltz

(3) WHOLINESS POSSIBLE THROUGH KOINONIA RETREAT

“I attended The KOINONIA RETREAT, through the invitation of Fr. Jimmy B.

Hababag, last previous year. I did not know what to expect except to be open to

the inspirations of the Holy Spirit.

“To my surprise it was really beyond my expectations. The whole program

was very nice and truly enriching not only spiritually but in every respect. The

Topics, the Speakers, the Facilitators, the Participants, the Camaraderie, the

ambience, the food, etc. were simply exceptional.

“I strongly invite you to try this once in a life time experience and you will never

be the same again.”

– Fr.Vincent Byaruhanga

Do Not take our words for it. You have to experience it yourself. You will

never be disappointed but glad that you do it.

HORARIO DE CUARESMA

II Domingo de Cuaresma, Ciclo C

San Lucas 9, 28b-36: San Lucas 6,17.20-26

gozarlo. No hay allí vejez, ni

achaques, ni nada que se-

meje corrupción, porque es el

lugar y aposento de la gloria

inmortal...

Nuestra vida en el Cielo

estará definitivamente exenta

de todo posible temor. No

sufriremos la inquietud de

perder lo que tenemos, ni

desearemos tener algo

distinto. Entonces verdadera-

mente podremos decir con

San Pedro: Señor, ¡qué bien

estamos aquí! «Vamos a

Y entonces me explico bien

Letrán IV: DS, 800; cf Concilio Vaticano I: ibíd., 3002 y Pablo VI, Credo del

Pueblo de Dios, 8).
