PIANO RECITAL

At my friends’ prodding, I am writing this story. My name is Mildred

Honor. I am a former elementary school music teacher from Des

Moines, Iowa. I always supplemented my income by teaching piano lessons – something

I have done for over 30 years. During those years I found that children have many levels

of musical ability. Though I never had the pleasure of having a prodigy, I taught some

very talented students. However, I also had my share of what I call musically challenged pupils - one such being

Robby. Robby was 11 yrs. old when his mother, a single mom, dropped him off for his first piano lesson.

I prefer that students (especially boys) begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Robby. But Robby said that it

had always been his mother’s dream to hear him play the piano, so I took him as a student. At the end of each

weekly lesson he would always say, “My Mom’s going to hear me play someday!” But to me it

seemed hopeless; he just did not have any inborn ability. I only knew his mother from a distance as

she dropped Robby off or waited in her aged car to pick him up. She always waved and smiled, but

never dropped in.

Then one day Robby stopped coming for lessons. I thought about calling him, but assumed that because of his

lack of ability he had decided to pursue something else. I was also glad that he had stopped coming, he was a bad

advertisement for my teaching! Several weeks later I mailed a flyer for a recital to students’ homes. To my

surprise, Robby (who had received a flyer) asked me if he could be in the recital. I told him that the recital was

for current pupils and that because he had dropped out, he really did not qualify. He told me that his mother had

been sick and unable to take him to his piano lessons, but that he had been practicing. “Please, Miss Honor, I’ve

just got to play,” he insisted. I don’t know what led me to allow him to play in the recital – perhaps it was his

insistence or maybe something inside of me saying that it would be all right. The night of the recital came. The

high school gymnasium was packed with parents, relatives and friends. I put Robby last in the program, just

before I was to come up, thank all the students, and play a finishing piece. I thought that any damage he might do

would come at the end of the program, and I could always salvage his poor performance

through my curtain closer.

Well, the recital went off without a hitch. Students had been practicing, and it showed.

Then Robby came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled. His hair looked as though he

had run an egg beater through it. Why wasn’t he dressed up like the other students? I

thought, “Why didn’t his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?”

Robby pulled out the piano bench, and I was surprised when he announced that he had

chosen to play Mozart’s Concerto No. 21 in C Major. I was not prepared for

what I heard next. His fingers were light on the keys; they even danced nimbly on the ivories. He

went from pianissimo to fortissimo, from allegro to virtuoso; the suspended chords that Mozart

demands were magnificent. Never had I heard Mozart played so well by anyone his age. After six

and a half minutes he ended in a grand crescendo, and everyone was on their feet in wild applause!

Overcome and in tears, I ran up on stage and put my arms

around Robby in joy. I said to him, “I have never heard you play like that

Robby, how did you do it?” Through the microphone Robby explained:

“Well, Miss Honor, remember I told you that my Mom was sick? Well, she

actually had cancer and passed away this morning. And well, she was born

deaf, so tonight was the first time she had ever heard me play, and I wanted

to make it special!” There wasn’t a dry eye in the house that evening as

people from Social Services led Robby from stage to be placed into foster care, and I noticed that even their eyes

were read and puffy. I thought to myself then how much richer my life had been for taking Robby as my pupil.

No, I have never had a prodigy, but that night I became a prodigy…of Robby. He was teacher and I pupil for he

had taught me the meaning of perseverance and love and believing in yourself, and maybe even taking a chance

on someone and you didn’t know why Thank you for reading this. May God Bless you today, tomorrow and

always.

If God didn’t have a purpose for us, we wouldn’t be here!

SPECIAL RECIPES Potato Leek Soup From the family of

Seminarian Jeremy Leidich

Ingredients:

6 T Butter, 2 Cups sliced leeks

2 Cups cold water

4 medium potatoes diced

½ cup sliced celery, ½ cup carrots

¼ cup onion

Several chicken broth cubes

2 cups milk

Paprika, Parsley, salt, pepper to taste

Directions:

MELT butter, WILT leeks in butter and COOK until

white, not brown. ADD water, potatoes, celery,

carrots, onions & cook for about 20 minutes.

ADD 2 chicken bouillon cubes and milk. Let SIMMER.

ADD salt, pepper, parsley to taste. SPRINKLE with

paprika with serving. ENJOY!

Pope Francis Will Use

The Gettysburg Lectern

for Historic Address at

Independence Hall, Sat., Sept. 26

Through the graciousness of The Abraham

Lincoln Foundation of The Union League of Phila.,

the Holy Father will deliver his historic address at

Independence Hall (Sat., Sept. 26) using the same

lectern (left) from which President Lincoln (right) delivered his Gettysburg Address (Nov. 19, 1863) one of the

most famous speeches in American history. President Lincoln spoke just 272 words in dedicating part of the

Gettysburg battlefield as the first National Soldiers Cemetery. The lectern, part of the J. Howard Wert

Collection, is on long-term loan from a private collector. The Battle of Gettysburg occurred July 1-3, 1863,

around the small town of Gettysburg, PA. Although it began as a small skirmish, more than 160,000

Americans became involved in the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, which effectively decided the Union’s

fate. When President Lincoln visited Gettysburg four months later, he offered just a two minute oration, which

closed with the immortal words that

“this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom --

and that government of the people, by the people, for the people,

shall not perish from the earth.”

Today, The Gettysburg Address remains one of the most quoted and well-

known speeches in American history. “We are both honored and grateful

for the generosity of the Abraham Lincoln Foundation in offering the

Holy Father the opportunity to speak from The Gettysburg Lectern at

Independence Hall,” said Robert J. Ciaruffoli, President of the WMOF.

“Its simple beauty and humble role in one of American history’s most

important moments reflect, in many ways, Pope Francis’ own worldview.

To have this man of faith who speaks for peace, love and religious freedom

around the world, use President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Lectern to address all

those who will come to see him in Phila., will be a deeply moving moment

for all.”

The Gettysburg Lectern is on display at the Sir John Templeton Heritage Center of The Union League of Phi-

la., which is open to the public. However, the lectern will only be on display through August, as it will then be

specially prepared by historic conservators for use by the Holy Father.

8 languages during portions of Papal Mass, Sun., Sept. 27.

The free app can be downloaded for Android devices and

Our parish is a Spiritual Family of Families. We publish a partial list of parish

households each week during this “Year of the Family”. Each household -- a

“domestic church” -- is the basic unit of our parish community of faith.

Park Ave., Warminster is across from the Train Station and

will open its parking lot to Papal Visit Train Riders. Walk to

station is about 2 city blocks. People who park at Burpee need

to cross the tracks at the designated spot to get to the station.

WMOF Film Festival Announced Tues. to Fri., Sept. 22-25. Curated by Greater Phila. Film

Office and Beneficial Bank are supporting a WMOF Film Festival at The Kimmel Center for the

Performing Arts, adding to the many cultural and family-friendly events being planned across the

WALK TO BETHLEHEM PROGRAM, which is

designed to encourage our Parish to become

more physically active while also fostering

spiritual growth.

Weekly “walking reflections” will be

provided so that you may ponder as you

walk.

Parish Religious Education Program Registrations for Fall PREP 2015 are now due.

Classes are Tuesdays: 4:15-5:30 pm or 6:45-8:00 pm.

If you’re child is entering 1st grade this September,

s/he needs to begin classes this Fall.

All families should register in advance of start dates.

Start date for Levels 1-5: Tues., Sept. 29

Start date for Level 6: Tues., Sept. 8

Register during Office Hours of the PREP office in Parish Center

or print registration forms from our parish website www.saintjohnbosco.org.

Just mail them to Parish Center or drop them in a Sunday Collection basket.

Families with a new student in PREP this yearmust register in person at

the PREP OFFICE. Please bring copy of his/her Baptism Certificate.

TUITION remains the same this year as last year,

1 child: $ 225, 2 children: $ 290, 3 or more children: $ 340).

$ 100 Deposit due at registration; Full Payment due before start of classes.
