A TOUCHING STORY
I was walking around the Target store, when I saw a cashier hand this little boy
some money back. The boy couldn’t have been more than 5 or 6 years old.
The cashier said, “I’m sorry, but you don’t have enough money to buy this doll!”
Then the little boy turned to the old woman next to him: “Granny, are you sure I don’t have enough
money?” The old lady replied: “You know that you don’t have enough money to buy this doll, my
dear.”
Then she asked him to stay there for just 5 minutes while she went to look around. She left quickly.
The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand. Finally, I walked toward him and I asked him who he wished
to give this doll to.
“It’s the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for Christmas. She was sure that Santa Claus would
bring it to her.”
I replied to him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all, and not to
worry.
But he replied to me sadly. “No, Santa Claus can’t bring it to her where she is now.
I have to give the doll to my Mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she
goes there.”
His eyes were so sad while saying this. “My sister has gone to be with God. Daddy
says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought she could take the
doll with her to give it to my sister.”
My heart nearly stopped.
The little boy looked up at me and said: “I told Daddy to tell Mommy not to go yet. I need
her to wait until I come back from the mall.”
Then he showed me a very nice photo of himself. He was laughing. He then told me: “I
want Mommy to take my picture with her so she won’t forget me.”
“I love my Mommy and I wish she didn’t have to leave me, but Daddy says that she has to
go to be with my little sister.”
Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly.
I quickly reached for my wallet and said to the boy, “Suppose we check again just in case you do have enough
money for the doll!”
“Ok,” he said. “I hope I do have enough.” I added some of my money to his without him seeing and we started to
count it. There was enough for the doll and even some spare money.
The little boy said: “Thank you God for giving me enough money!”
Then he looked at me and added, “I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make
sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that Mommy could give it to my sister. He
heard me!”
“I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my
Mommy, but I didn’t dare to ask God for too much. But He
gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose.”

A few minutes later, the elderly lady returned, and I
left with my basket.
I finished my shopping in a totally different state of
mind from when I started.
I couldn’t get the little boy out of my
mind. Then I remembered a local
newspaper article two days before,
which mentioned a drunken man in a
truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman and
a little girl.
The little girl died right away and the mother was left
in a critical state. The family had to decide whether
to pull the plug on the life-sustaining machine
because the young woman would not be able to
recover from the coma.
Was this the family of the little boy?
Two days after this encounter with the little boy, I
read in the newspaper that the young woman had
passed away.
I couldn’t stop myself as I bought a bunch of white
roses and I went to the funeral home where the body
of the young woman was for people to see and make
last wishes before her burial.
She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white
rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and
the doll placed over her chest.
I left the place, teary eyed, feeling that my life had
been changed forever. The love that the little boy
had for his mother and his sister is still, to this day,
hard to imagine. And in a fraction of a second, a
drunk driver had taken all of this away from him.

Papacy [‘pāpəsē ] noun: papacy plural noun: papacies
the office or authority of pope Definition from Oxford Dictionaries, Oxford University Press.
Ed. Note: We have the Archdiocese of Washington’s permission to use this resource which they authored in 2008. The
Phila. Archdiocese and our parish staff edited/updated it for use here. We hope this Parish Bulletin Papacy series refreshes
your enthusiasm to chat comfortably with family, neighbors, friends, co-workers, even complete strangers, about Pope
Francis and our Roman Catholic Church. Questions or comments? Email [email protected].
14. When did Vatican City become an independent country?
For many hundreds of years the Pope ruled the Papal States, 16,000 square miles of land
across the central section of Italy. The secular Kingdom of Italy in 1870 seized these lands from the Pope and
left him the areas surrounding the Vatican, the Church of the Lateran Basilica in Rome (his Cathedral), and the
Castel Gandolfo villas. These lands became part of Italy in 1871. After this very controversial seizure of the
church’s lands and the pope’s voluntary confinement in the Vatican, the Italian government and Vatican City
settled the dispute in 1929 with the Lateran Treaty by which Vatican City was formally recognized as an
independent country within the surrounding City of Rome, Italy.
15. What is the Magisterium of the Church?
Magister (Latin) means teacher. The Magisterium is the Church’s living, teaching office, responsible to give
an authentic interpretation of God’s Word, whether in Sacred Scripture (written form) or in Tradition (form of
authoritative teachings handed down by Popes, Fathers and Doctors of the Church, Bishops, Councils). The
Magisterium ensures the Church’s fidelity to Apostles’ teaching in matters of faith and morals.
16. What does the term papal infallibility mean? Infallibility is a charism (a special gift of the Holy Spirit
that directly or indirectly benefits the Church).
Infallibility characterizes teaching by the Pope alone as well as together with the Bishops in union with the
Pope. Infallibility is “a certain inability to err in believing or teaching revealed truth.”
When does the Pope teach infallibly? Infallibility is exercised when the Roman Pontiff, in virtue of his office
as Supreme Pastor of the Church, by which he enjoys a special gift of the Holy Spirit, and as Head of the College
of Bishops in union with him and especially when joined together in an Ecumenical Council, proclaims by a
definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals. Infallibility is also exercised when the Pope and bishops
in their ordinary Magisterium agree in proposing a doctrine as definitive. Every one of the faithful must adhere
to such teaching with obedience of faith.
1. Why do we call the Pope the Bishop of Rome?
Every diocesan bishop, in distinction to an auxiliary bishop and a bishop of a personal prelature, is chief pastor
or local ordinary of a portion of the people of God territorially defined, which is referred to as a diocese. Thus,
the “Bishop of Rome” refers to the diocesan bishop who is the chief pastor or ordinary of the city of Rome as
well as surrounding areas included within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Diocese of Rome. Strictly
speaking, the Pope is Bishop of Rome in that he has all ordinary, proper and immediate power that is required for
exercise of his pastoral function within the territorial limits of the Diocese of Rome. However, the Bishop of
Rome also is Successor of St. Peter, first Bishop of Rome, to whom Jesus uniquely entrusted the Power of the
Keys. The Pope’s title Bishop of Rome is pre-eminent over all other titles of the Pope, e.g. head of the college
of bishops, Vicar of Christ and pastor of the universal Church on earth, because all these additional titles derive
from his authority as Bishop of Rome.
2. What is the Pope’s cathedral church? The Pope’s cathedral is the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
Cathedral derives from the Latin word for chair (cathedra), i.e. the chair from which the diocesan bishop teaches.
Every diocesan bishop has a cathedral, a designated church where the bishop’s chair, sign of episcopal authority, is prominently situated. While most people think of St. Peter’s Basilica as the Pope’s church, it is not his
cathedral. St. John Lateran was the first parish church established in Rome and therefore became the Pope’s cathedral. It is
considered the “Mother Church of all Christian Churches” in the world. It has its own feast day in the church calendar!

"Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive."
Our parish is a Spiritual Family of Families. We publish a
partial list of parish households each week during this “Year of the
Family”. Each household -- a “domestic church” -- is the basic unit
of our parish community of faith.
