Brothers and Sisters,February is a very important and exciting month in Elkdom. This is when wenominate and elect the Lodge Officers who will lead the Lodge in theupcoming Year. Speaking from experience and on behalf of all our pastofficers the dedication, perseverance and effort exhibited by the individualswho volunteer for any office is greatly appreciated. Active leadership movesour Lodge forward and ensures our charitable works continue to help ourcommunity. Nominations are the first meeting in February with electionstaking place at the second meeting. I encourage you to attend.
After recent meetings with Our House Committee and Board of Trustees Ican assure you there are exciting things happening in the Lodge. HouseCommittee Chairperson Bambi Crepeau and her committee are planningseveral events for the last two months of the Lodge year that can be enjoyedby all members. Check the bulletin to get more details on these fun events. Ican also report that the Trustees are actively working to identify all that isrequired to reinvent and improve our Lodge for all members and their familiesto enjoy. Watch the bulletin for notification when the Trustees will presenttheir recommendations to the Lodge and ask for approval to move forward tomake the improvements a reality.
On January 18th I and nine of our members attended the Mid-year meetingof our State Association at the Groton Lodge where we received updates onseveral activities and programs currently underway in the State. Themembers in attendance overwhelmingly approved the motion that theConnecticut Elks Association becomes the major sponsor for the SpecialOlympics athletic games. This expands our support for this great program. The State Chairman for Government relations reported on two bills that arebeing considered in the Connecticut Legislature that have significant impacton our Lodge. The first is a bill to ban smoking in any private organization asit presents a health risk to people who work there. At this time theAssociation is neither supporting nor protesting this bill. The second piece oflegislation that is being written is to allow city and town governments to offsettaxes for organizations that provide charitable works and donations in thetown. The membership endorsed the support of this bill. Also at the meetingour State sponsor PGER Peter Affatato announced that our Special DeputyRobert Hansen, PGIG, PGLCC, PSP, PDD has been selected to serve on theGrand Board of Trustees. Congratulations to Bob on this well deserveddistinction.
At our State Association convention in June Milford Lodge will experience aspecial event when PDD Jan Wankowicz is installed as President of theConnecticut Elks Association. I encourage you to join with the large numberof members that are attending the convention in Sturbridge to support Jan.There will soon be several basket raffles being run in the Lounge to helpraise funds to put on a Hospitality room at the convention for Jan. Pleasestop down and take some chances on this raffle.
So as always, in closing I ask you to read your bulletin and get involved.Remember “IT’S GREAT TO BE AN ELK”. Fraternally, Dave Field, PDD, Exalted Ruler
