January 2019 Message from the Principal’s Desk: “Merely being the best version of yourself can help you stand out.” Dear Parent, Learning is the core purpose of life. It is an absolute necessity to be prepared for a future that we do not know about. Hence, the need of the hour is just not learning but taking responsibility for learning. We can achieve this through creative learning, innovation and leadership which will pave the path ahead to self - growth and collaboration. Taking small steps to accomplish this goal is the way to go, but there needs to be support and encouragement. Taking risks and sometimes even looking at failure as “fuel for innovation” can help promote this process. If something does not work, we can learn from it, and then modify and try again. It depends on how we inspire everyone to bring out his or her best creative self and use it to help lead and transform lives to a better, beautiful, creative and innovative tomorrow where learning is not limited to academics but on a journey to acquire leadership competencies to excel as a whole. Let us begin with some news of what happened in December: 1) CAS at Indus: a) The Orion and Phoenix house have together decided to create a resource centre for students in the Kondakal Primary School. They plan to refurbish an existing room currently used for storage to a room where they can put up computers, arrange a small library and a craft corner. On 18th January, volunteers from both houses diligently undertook the task of dusting and rearranging the room allocated for the resource centre. It was a good experience for the students, as they learnt to be self-reliant.

Message from the Principal’s Desk:

“Merely being the best version of yourself can help you stand out.” Dear Parent, Learning is the core purpose of life. Let us begin with some news of what happened in December: 1) CAS at Indus:

a) The Orion and Phoenix house have together decided to create a resource centre for students in the Kondakal

Primary School. They plan to refurbish an existing room currently used for storage to a room where they can put

up computers, arrange a small library and a craft corner.

On 18th January, volunteers from both houses diligently undertook the task of dusting and rearranging the room

allocated for the resource centre. It was a good experience for the students, as they learnt to be self-reliant.

b) The students of Hercules House aim to focus on the fitness of students from Kondakal, Mokila and Thanda and

also to educate them about personal hygiene. They plan to host a sports day for them with a Throw Ball tourna-

ment for girls, a Cricket tournament for boys, march past and as well as track and field events.

So far the students have trained students from the Kondakal primary school.

c) Orion house commenced teaching the students of Kondakal Secondary school. They taught them the parts of the

computer, as well as more practical skills such as how to navigate on the computer, how to use Microsoft Pow-

erPoint, and how to turn the computer on and off.

The students at Kondakal Secondary school made slides on their own, guided by the members of house. The

main focus is on hands-on learning.

d) During the CAS period, the Phoenix House students visited the Kondakal secondary school where their mentees

greeted them with glee. The objective of the visit was to teach students the skills of reading the English news-

paper and familiarizing them with the categories of news published in a general newspaper. Each Phoenix

house student has at least three mentees under their care and at the end of the session their mentees knew

which page to look for a particular category of news.

e) Food Stall set up by students on 19th January 2018:

Our students with entrepreneurship skills, set up food stalls on 19th January. Students sold traditional sweets, snacks, and beverages such as tea and coffee. They made a profit of Rs. 9000 and this would help us set up the resource centre.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH: a) Sankranti Celebration:

Makar Sankranti is believed traditionally to mark the arrival of spring in India. The harvest festival was celebrated

by students as they came dressed in their traditional clothes and relished the Sankranti special delicacies at lunch.

The support staff decorated the school with beautiful Rangoli designs. The boarders enjoyed flying kites, which

is a cherished tradition during this festival.

3. Counselors Update @ IISH

a) Workshop with boarders:

I. PYP Workshop

The students of PYP expanded their understanding of Problem solving skills. Students made Calm-down

jars, had learning engagements involving various games and challenges. Students learnt to have a calm

mind using mindful breathing techniques, followed by steps to solve a problem using different coping

skills. Grade 5 students delved deeper into conflict resolution strategies and shared their understanding

with their peers.

II. The following Sessions were conducted for the MYP and IBDP students:

a. Puberty Talk for Grade 6 – Grade 8

It is imperative to talk about puberty on scientific lines, clear myths associated with puberty and increase

acceptance that these changes are normal part of growing into an adult. Hence, sessions were conducted

for grade 6 to grade 8. Students gained understanding of the physical, emotional and interpersonal changes

that occur during this stage of development. As these were separate sessions for boys and girls, both gen-

ders felt comfortable asking questions and clarifying doubts concerning puberty.

b. Safe and Unsafe Touch – Grade 6 A & B

A session on safe and unsafe touch with grade 6A and 6B. The students were shown a Childline video, titled

Komal, on child sexual abuse prevention. Most students had already watched the short film and it was a

refresher for them, while for others it was the first time they learned about safe and unsafe touch.

The counsellor emphasized that being alert and cautious is important and one must report incidents to

trusted adults without delay to prevent sexual abuse.

c. Dealing with Relationships:

A session with all grade 11 students on dealing with breakups and one-sided attraction to help teenagers

cope with these struggles, the counsellors discussed ways of handling rejection and breakups. The goal was

to teach students beneficial coping skills and reduce unhealthy habits. Students were encouraged to re-

spect the choice of another individual to turn them down, connect with friends and family to help them

recover faster, avoid self-destructive habits and seek help. The counsellors explained the repercussions of

emotional vulnerability and advised students to avoid jumping into relationships as a way of dealing with

loneliness. To conclude, students were advised to use their time after breakups to develop themselves,

achieve their goals and connect with their support system.

III. Sessions for the Boarders:

a. Emotional Sensitivity – Grade 9

The idea was to make children aware of their emotions and level of sensitivity they have for themselves

or others. After, a motivational discussion to understand the emotions behind simple and slightest ac-

tions, students were given the self-assessment. They were happy to know the ways in which emotional

sensitivity can be increased and decreased. They also understood the importance of balanced sensitivity.

b. Support Group learn about each other’s problems and discover healthy solutions - This group will aim

to help children who can later help others. This group will meet every Thursday after school. In the first

meeting we spoke about ground rules and students came up with their own rules for themselves. They

were very motivated and excited about the next meetings.

c. On 26 and 27 January 2019, well-being sessions were organized by Ms Hafsa Nooria. She is a pioneer in

the field and has rich work experience from UK and Europe. Children enjoyed her sessions which involved

understanding of ‘feel good’, ‘transforming negative messages to positive affirmations’ and importance

of self-love.
