Most priests and ministers would probably prefer that the two holidays not be confused, but I find this coincidence offers an opportunity. From even before the time of the ancient Greeks, “fools” have occupied a special place in our society. A court fool might be a very clever individual with a great sense of humor. They were given to teasing and humoring the people of the court, sometimes good naturedly, sometimes with “rapier wit,” wit with an edge, each a dangerous edge. The king or queen might take them seriously or just not be in the mood for “tomfoolery.” The fool was as subject to the ruler’s mood as everyone else, but they stood a better chance of “getting away” with their foolishness and even being rewarded for it. They helped to release tension in a highly political atmosphere. In some cases the fools had a physical disability that might cause them to be more subject to abuse. It all depended upon the mood of the ruler at the time. The fool found him or herself living on the edge. Historical records are full of reports of fools being cast out to end their days in poverty or prison. There was also another kind of fool. That person would be someone who was born mentally disabled. Their purpose at court could have been entertainment (they were frequently the butt of jokes) or just to be the outlet for the frustrations of those who ruled. Their overall purpose was to be abused. They were often slaves and sold to the court for however the court wished to use them. The cruelty of their lives frequently led to early death. However, it was also possible that the person with a mental or physical disability might be a member of the ruling family. They were frequently thought to be divine fools gifts from God. They were seen as constant, living reminders, sent by God, of how difficult life could be and how fortunate those who were lucky enough to be born “normal” really were. These divine fools’ lives were seen to be utterly subject to God’s will and their fate foreordained. In that sense, perhaps we can see Jesus Christ as God’s fool, a divine fool, placed among us to be our conscience and then punished for our sins, abused for his love of us. Or perhaps we can see him as our fool, the one we can pay attention to or not as the whim seizes us, the one we can kick or hug or thoroughly ignore. Isn’t that how Jesus has been treated through the ages? Perhaps Easter, the day of Jesus’ resurrection is the Fool’s Day, our Divine Fool’s Day. Blessings! Mother Susan

The Shepherd’s Crook The Church of the Good Shepherd

Pitman, NJ The Rev. Susan E. Osborne-Mott, Rector March 2018

“We Love Our Church”

Rector’s Note

As you can probably guess, Easter Sunday rarely coincides with April Fools’ Day. Most priests and ministers

would probably prefer that the two holidays not be confused, but I find this coincidence offers an opportunity.

From even before the time of the ancient Greeks, “fools” have occupied a special place in our society. A court

fool might be a very clever individual with a great sense of humor. They were given to teasing and humoring

the people of the court, sometimes good naturedly, sometimes with “rapier wit,” wit with an edge, each a

dangerous edge. The king or queen might take them seriously or just not be in the mood for “tomfoolery.” The

fool was as subject to the ruler’s mood as everyone else, but they stood a better chance of “getting away” with

their foolishness and even being rewarded for it. They helped to release tension in a highly political

atmosphere.

In some cases the fools had a physical disability that might cause them to be more subject to abuse. It all

depended upon the mood of the ruler – at the time. The fool found him or herself living on the edge. Historical

records are full of reports of fools being cast out to end their days in poverty or prison.

There was also another kind of fool. That person would be someone who was born mentally disabled. Their

purpose at court could have been entertainment (they were frequently the butt of jokes) or just to be the outlet

for the frustrations of those who ruled. Their overall purpose was to be abused. They were often slaves and

sold to the court for however the court wished to use them. The cruelty of their lives frequently led to early

death.

However, it was also possible that the person with a mental or physical disability might be a member of the

ruling family. They were frequently thought to be divine fools – gifts from God. They were seen as constant,

living reminders, sent by God, of how difficult life could be and how fortunate those who were lucky enough

to be born “normal” really were. These divine fools’ lives were seen to be utterly subject to God’s will and

their fate foreordained.

In that sense, perhaps we can see Jesus Christ as God’s fool, a divine fool, placed among us to be our

conscience and then punished for our sins, abused for his love of us. Or perhaps we can see him as our fool,

the one we can pay attention to or not as the whim seizes us, the one we can kick or hug or thoroughly ignore.

Isn’t that how Jesus has been treated through the ages?

Perhaps Easter, the day of Jesus’ resurrection is the Fool’s Day, our Divine Fool’s Day.

Blessings!

Mother Susan

Sundays: 9:00 AM – Contemplative Prayer 10:00 AM – Holy Eucharist Tuesdays & Thursdays: 9 AM Morning Prayer

Prayer Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry

Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them. I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere. If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood

OUR PRAY-ERS

MINISTRY

Each Sunday during Communion time, our

team of Pray-ers offer prayers with our

parishioners. We have now expanded this

meaningful ministry to our Saturday evening

Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm.

After you receive Holy Communion, if you

want/need additional prayers, there will be a

team of Pray-ers in the front of the Church who

are willing to pray with you. These prayers can

be offered in joy for a Blessing you have

received, or can be to help ease a burden which

lies on your heart. Please take advantage of this

wonderful ministry of our parish. All prayers

are confidential. Anyone interested in being a Pray-er

Minister at the Saturday night or Sunday

services please contact Barbara Elliott @ 589-

3980 or [email protected]

HEALING PRAYER

Mother Susan is now offering Healing Prayer with anointing and laying on of hands on the first Saturday of every month following the Saturday evening service.

Please Be Considerate of Our Neighbors!

We are so glad you're here! But when you park near the

church, please be considerate of our neighbors and make

sure you have fully cleared their driveways. Thank you!

Contemplative Prayer Time Before Our Worship Services

For those who seek a time for quiet prayer on Saturdays and Sundays, Mother Susan opens the church on Saturdays at 4:30 PM for the 5:30 PM service. We ask that 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM be a quiet prayerful time. Likewise, for Sundays, she will be in the Church at 9 AM for a quiet time from 9 AM to 9:30 AM.

We ask that all who come early to church honor these times as times for quiet prayer and contemplation.

MORNING PRAYER

Morning Prayer is on Tuesday & Thursday mornings

at 9 AM with Mother Susan in the Chapel.

OUTREACH

Thank you for all the donations of amazing clothing for those in Camden. We now deliver these clothes to St. Wilfrid’s Episcopal Church’s clinic. These clothes are handed out to those desperate for decent clothing. Men’s shoes and clothes are the most difficult for them to obtain so that is what we endeavor to provide. Please, if you have any men’s or boy’s clothing or shoes, in good condition, that you no longer need, we would be happy to deliver them for you. Just place them in manageable size bags – no boxes PLEASE – on our front porch and we will see that they get there! We live at: 223 Highland Terrace, Pitman.

Thanks so much! Deacon Carl and Ellie Dunn

CHURCH HISTORY DISPLAY

Please take some time to have a look at the Church History Exhibit in the glass case in the Parish Hall. I am displaying items donated by our Good Shepherd Family! This exhibit is so that we can all share in our church family’s history together! We have had some wonderful pictures of past church events, marriages that took place in our church, historical pictures of Pitman, vintage prayer books, Sunday School curriculum of the past, etc.! Please let me know if you have something that you would like to share with everyone. It will be returned to you when the exhibit is complete in 3-4 months.

Thanks so much! Ellie Dunn

Adult Forum

The Adult Forum will next meet on Sunday, March 4, in

the Conference Room following the 10 a.m. Service. We

will begin a new series entitled "Painting the Stars:

Science, Religion and an Evolving Faith". This is a Living

the Questions Series which celebrates the communion of

science and faith. "Painting the Stars" explores the

promise of evolutionary Christian spirituality.

Evolutionary in this series means not just biological

evolution, but the evolution of all that we are - physical,

emotional, spiritual within a created evolving order. We

will focus on the first session: "Toward Healing the Riff."

John Haught states "There's a place for divine action, but

it's from the future, not the past. God lures all living things

toward a future, offers a lure to our freedom, not a

demand for our action".

Thank you God for

Combined Ingredients BY ALICE AULTMAN

Lets’ face it. Grocery shopping is a chore. Not only do we have to decide what we need, we

have to get to the store, load bags in the car, unload the car and take care of the spoils. The

thought occurred to me as I was going through

this process of how important it is to have the right ingredients to create what we want. On

my counter next to the sugar canister there was milk and eggs, both nutritious but when

combined with sugar and a bit of seasoning

there is custard with a lot of possible variations. It is a matter of combining the right

ingredients and baking. Wheat is milled into flour. Now just think of all the places flour is

used! We are indeed blessed with an array of ingredients we can use to our liking.

It is not just foods that we combined to our liking. Clothing is another example of things

that can be varied and mixed to not only cover our bodies but to give us a choice of color and

styles to give us a unique appearance.

We could go on about our freedom of choice.

We are sure blessed to have these choices.

For a moment just think of the combined personalities that make up a church, the

community or neighborhood. And to top this all off we can choose in general whom we

spend time with.

Thank you, God for all the diversity you give

us as you provide the multitude of choices that we can combine to our liking, You are a great

and awesome God and we adore you.
