Gold(#079, Au)

Golden lights, displaying your name

When I saw you, I was so attracted to you.Your Golden hair reflected the sunlightthe day we met,and ever since our first encounter,I desperately needed you with me.

You bought me gold jewelry, and to this day I wearyour Gold chain around my neck, your Gold ring around my finger.

You were go soft, and I would do whatever you wanted, but as time wore on,I saw you would bend to me as well —you seemed so malleablewhen it came to you and me.I loved how my Golden boywould follow any choice I madewhen we were together.

Golden lights, displaying your name,Golden lights, it’s a terrible shame

You were like the glow of sunrise, and when we were together, you were coursing through my veins. You were so valuable to me.You were so precious to me.I would have even consumed you,if you gave me the chance.

Golden slumber steals your eyes

But you never gave me that chance, and it was like the world was heartbrokenas so many came to your coffinto see your Golden hair one final time.

They called me a Gold diggerbecause before before your cremationdoctors had your Gold fillings removed.

I kept your Gold wedding ring, too, that must also make me a Gold digger.

In my mind, you were perfection for me,you were the summitof everything that mattered to me.When I think of how pure you were,to this day, nothing tarnishes my love for you. That is why, on some early mornings,I step outsideand feel the glow of the morning sunrise,to remind meof our neverending love.

Nitrogen in my veins

(#007, N, stemming from “Fingers Black”, written 6/5/10)

You told me nothing. You just left me.

Now wait a minute,I’m a journalist,so all I could dowas turn my fingers black, scouring the newspapers, searching for any newsabout what happenedwith us.

The ink from that papercrept around my fingernails, trying to work it’s wayunder my skin.I could feel thatdarkened soybean oil, that petroleum oil, creeping it’s way into me.I could feel that Nitrogenfrom that petroleum oilpiggy-backing on thathydrogen, carbon, oxygen.I could feel that Nitrogenbutting that sulfur out of the way, pushing it’s waypast the only trace amountsof nickel and iron.(Those trace elementscouldn’t stand a chanceagainst the powerof that Nitrogen, that powerto spill the newsout to the world.)

. Janet Kuypers .

Page 5: S cience Mysticism

I ran my handsthrough those newspaper pages.I felt that inkseep under my skin, and I felt the surgeof that Nitrogen in my veins.

I know they use liquid Nitrogento fuel cars,to make them goat stellar speeds...And I know people take Nitrogento give their bodiesadded strength,so,journalist or not, maybe this isexactlywhat I need.

I’ll scour those pages,I’ll let that Nitrogenseep into my veins,as I look for any wayto get you back.

Besides, all this ink’s in me now. This Nitrogen has given methe impetusfor all I’ve got to say.

Vanadium(#023, V)

I’ve been going out with my boyfriendfor five years now...

And when he took me to proma few years ago,his bulging bicepsalmost made his tuxedo sleeves burst.

And I know he spentfour hours a day lifting weights,I know he drank raw eggsand took all sorts of drugsjust so he could be the strongest...

But every girl I knewdid a double-take, all agapewhenever he entered the room.

And it was the coolest thing, climbing up into his truckwith the awesome exhaustand the cool flames painted down the sides, when he would take me to the moviesor drop me off for my cosmetology classes.

Now, I always thoughtit was kind of weirdthat he would take different drugsjust to bulk up more, but he’d swear they were legal,I mean,he even told me one of them was justa harmless element called Vanadium, and I don’t know, when he said “element”I just thought about howI just kind of tuned outin chemistry class,

. Janet Kuypers .

Page 7: S cience Mysticism

so I typed “Vanadium”into my smart phone, and I didn’t see anythingabout it being bad for youor illegal or anything...

All the girls in school would ask meif I would stick with himafter I got a job out of school...

And the thing is,now that my twenty-third birthdayis coming up,I’ve got a joband I’ve been doing really well...

And he’s been dropping hintslike he might pop the questionon my birthday this June.

But he was acting really weird,so I thoughtsomething was fishy,so I checked out his smart phonefor any ideas of what he might be doingfor my birthday...

And that’s when I saw“Vanadium” on a web page link, and I thought,‘Oh no, is he doing MOREto try to get even BIGGER?’...

So I went to the web page, and I saw that Vanadiumwas added to “corundum”(what? I don’t even knowwhat corundum IS),but Vanadium is added to itto make simulated Alexandrite gemstones.

Page 8: S cience Mysticism

Now, wait a minute,I know Alexandrite is my birthhtone, and it’s only found in like Russia. It’s really cool, it changes colorin different light, but it’s WAY expensive, like more than diamonds or anything,so I figured I could never affordany Alexandrite.

And you know, now that I’m out of schoolI’ve got a really good job at the salon, and after being promotedthey’re looking to promote me again,I’m starting to feellike I can actuallyGO somewhere in my life.

So now that I think about it,I mean, it was greatto hang off my bodybuilder’s armall these years, but maybe now I should startto stand up for myself.I mean,he may have thought he needed Vanadiumto make himself bigger, but there’s no wayI’m going to take an Alexandrite rip-offwith Vanadiumif that’s the best he can do...

DNA and Carbon,in Asteroids

(oh my)(#006, C)

You know, us Carbon-based life formsalways wonder where we came from, how we got here.

And with science on our side,we’ve looked beyondguessing and story tellingto find proof in our answers.

And still, we look beyondwhat we know around usto find out how we were formedhere on earth.

#

A couple of asteroidsjust flewperilously close to the earth.Asteroid 2012 DA 14 intersected the iridium constellation, flew through all of our global communication satellites. An asteroid turned meteor blew up in the atmosphereabove the Ural mountains;every Russian on the roadfilmed the sky explosionwith their dashboard cameras, before the sonic boom shattered windows everywhereand injured over a thousand people.

Page 10: S cience Mysticism

And over two thirds of our planetis covered in water, just think of all of the impactswe’re missing out on;I mean, our news feedsdon’t come from the middle of the ocean...

So we seem to think that these stellar explosionsare becoming more and more rare, because our planet is pocked with massive impactsfrom the earth’s early history. But now that these scientistshave been scanning the skiesand studying the meteors buried in Antarctica, they’ve learned that many asteroids and meteorscolliding with our planet’s crustactually carry atanine and guanine.

Asteroids carry major structures that form DNA.

It’s very possiblethat throughout the early history of earth, asteroids collided with this planet, leaving their Carbon-rich DNA structures behindto help start life, and populate the earth.

I mean, Scientists have always wonderedhow the elemental sextet of life:Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, phosphorous, nitrogen, calcium, how did these elements got togetherin just the right wayto eventually create earth’s Carbon-based life forms.

I guess it would help that primordial soupif some asteroids brought alonga little bit of DNA,so some of our building blockscame ready-made.

Astronomers say that we’re all made out of stardust, because all of our atomsoriginate from the explosion of stars, but for this Carbon-based life form,it’s cool that some of these asteroids and meteorscarried our Carbon —and some of our DNA —here to planet earth,to jump-start our creationand get our genetic gears going.

Boron fromthe Big Bang

(#005, B)

The Higgs boson, the Higgs particle. The God particle,as some have called it.It’s an elusiveelementary particletheorized aboutfor nearly half a century.

They call it the God particlebecause it might have createdall matter.

You see, scientistsare trying to figure outhow the Big Bangstarted to evolve. You see, the theoryis that all of the universe’s energywas createdfrom this massive explosionfromnothingness. But the question remains:how did anyof that energyturn into matter?

Because during the firstfew minutes of our universeafter the Big Bang, the temperature was so hot, that it was too hotfor any binding energythat could have supportedany matter, even hydrogenor it’s isotope deuterium. With temperatures so hot, this bottleneckdelayed the formation of anythinguntil the universewas cool enoughto make anythingout of anything.

But just a few minutesafter the Big Bang, elements burst forth, because the universesuddenly got cool enough. But at twenty minutesafter the Big Bang, the universe was suddenlyTOO cool for nuclear fusionor nucleosynthesis, and THAT is when elementalabundances were nearly fixed...

Page 13: S cience Mysticism

. science vs. Mysticism .

. 13 .

That meanshydrogen, heliumand trace anountsof lithium, berylliumand Boronwere the elements formedin those first three minutesof the Big Bang.(Sorry, any elementsstarting at carbon or higherwere only formedafter stars were aroundto create them.)

...So the creationof matter out of energyduring the formationof this universeonly happenedin an insanely brief periodof the universe’s history. Was it justthe insanely hot temperature in this insanely short periodthat did it?

And what does thishave to do withthe Higgs boson particle anyway?

Well, scientists believethis Higgs particle is a partof the Higgs field,an invisible field of energythroughout the entire universe. That Higgs particleinteracts with whatever energypasses through the Higgs field. And with this interaction, particles, massless particles, they trade their energyto gain masswhen passing through.

And this Higgs field,in the beginning of the universe, helped create matter.

Which helped create us.

Higgs helped create matter, including the first elementsin the universe, from hydrogento the comparatively heavyBoron.

Yeah, five electrons is heavyin the formation of the universe.

Page 14: S cience Mysticism

. Janet Kuypers .

. 14 .

Yeah, Boron, which helps keep our bones strong.Boron treats osteoarthritis.Boron builds muscles, and when it comes totrying to understand this science,it even improves our thinking skills.

We’ve known of Boronfor thousands of years, from the deserts in Tibet,or from China in glazesthrough to Persiabefore it got to Italy, where it was usedfor medical purposes.

Well, knowing how longwe’ve used Borax for cleaning,or even that Boron’s usedto make the strongestmagnet ever made,it’s nice to knowthat we also understandhow much thisinfancy-of-the-universeelementis vital in everything in our lives, from our muscles and bonesto the very creation of the universe.

Yeah, it’s cool to seehow scientistsare starting to piece togetherhow matter came to bein this universe, because without that Higgs field, and without that Higgs particle, energy would neverhave turned intoBoron,to create any

thing,

or even create us.
