studies indicate that failure to graduate from high

school results in substantially lower earnings over

the life course (Rouse 2005), dramatically poorer

health (Muennig 2005), considerably more

dependence on public assistance (Waldfogel et al.

2005), and a marked increase in the likelihood of

involvement in crime and incarceration (Moretti

2005).

Dropping out of school, however, is only the end

of the more general process of school

disengagement, a process that typically begins

earlier in the educational career. In terms of

prevention, measuring early school

disengagement may be more beneficial,

compared to assessing dropout alone.

Determinare se il disimpegno scolastico è un indicatore di

successivo abbandono e un fattore di rischio per

l’attuazione di comportamenti problematici (delinquenza grave e uso

di sostanze stupefacenti) nella tarda adolescenza e prima età adulta.

IPOTESI DI RICERCA Il disimpegno scolastico è indice

significativo di abbandono della scuola superiore, del consumo di sostanze e della delinquenza grave.

Lo stato di abbandono gioca a sua volta un ruolo centrale, in termini di fattore di rischio, nella persistenza dei suddetti comportamenti problematici anche in età adulta.

RISULTATI Il disimpegno scolastico correla positivamente

con l’abbandono della scuola superiore.

Il disimpegno scolastico è significativamente e positivamente associato a forme gravi di criminalità, violenza, azioni illegali e consumo di stupefacenti.

Lo status di abbandono scolastico si traduce come fattore di rischio per la perpetuazione di azioni violente e consumo di sostanze in età adulta.

CONCLUSIONI

In generale possiamo dire che il disimpegno scolastico, misurato tra il 7° e l’8°, è

associato all’abbandono scolastico e alla maggior parte dei comportamenti

problematici in adolescenza, nonché alla loro perpetuazione in età adulta.
