In this class you will identify your dominant personality style, understand the components of communication and improve your overall ability to effectively communicate.

Mechanical Industry Perspective

Identify major union mechanical market sectors. Explore industry stakeholders. Discuss the partnership of labor and management. Demonstrate the project manager’s sphere of influence.

MODULE 2 • Instructor - Dennis Pettitt

Project Documentation

Learn how to create and maintain an effective flow of project documentation and its importance. Understand how to maintain a comprehensive and accurate project history. Learn best practices for efficiently recording accurate as-builts. Learn how to establish a set of documents that can be used to verify the actions and decisions of the project team in a claim, dispute or change order.

MODULE 3 • Instructor - Sean Pettitt

Safety

Discuss safety, safety culture and reasons for safety programs. Understand the role of the project manager for work safety. Examine an overview of human performance concepts. Learn about workplace accident statistics, the accident pyramid, cost of accidents and EMR.

MODULE 4 • Instructor - Dan Klimek

Scheduling

Discuss scheduling programs, tools and methods. Review mechanical work breakdown structures. Develop resource loaded schedules. Define key steps to building a schedule. Identify the mechanical clues in GC schedules. Practice last planner process.

Financial Management

Learn the real cost of an hour of labor. Interpret and understand key financial statements used in the industry. Calculate WIP while defining project impacts of the financial statement. Analyze how we recognize construction revenue and the difference between margin and markup. Understand under and over-billing and describe the business implications.

Contracts

Understand what contracts are and how they are included in your subcontract. Learn key risk shifting provisions. Be introduced to changes in provisions in the sub and prime contracts. Learn elements of a typical change provision. Discuss relevant case studies.

Estimating

Understand the estimating process, pipe and fitting takeoff, the MCAA labor estimating tool, overhead, general conditions (ODJC) costs and analysis of risk and margin.

Learn this history of labor and management relations. Understand the Colorado approach. Discuss the National Labor Relations Act and multi-employer groups. Learn strategic vs. tactical negotiations and mixed-motive exchange. Understand your role in dispute resolution.

Learn to apply a process for identifying, organizing and tracking your activities, projects and responsibilities. Gain a clear understanding of how you currently spend your time and decide what is the best use of your time if you want to accomplish your goals.
