FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK

When we hear today’s gospel of Jesus calling Peter, James and John we might consider just how power-ful and inviting was that call. They left everything to answer to it. We also might consider how, in spite of persecutions and deep personal struggles, the Church grew into the single largest faith tradition in the world, all stemming from Jesus’ initial call to follow him. Until recent times the Church has continued to grow. In-terestingly, however, but for certain cultures, such as those from Hispanic and Asian countries, the numbers in the Church in the United States would be in sharp decline. This should cause us to pause and reflect on how we, as Church, are continuing that call of and attraction to Jesus Christ and what a church of disciples looks like. I often hear from parents and grandparents how their adult children no longer practice their faith. That usually means they no longer come to mass. While that should not be the only sign of practicing faith, it certainly ought to be a culmination of one week and a beginning of another where faith is lived out. How we interact in the world and within our families, schools and workplaces must proclaim the gospel. To be “catchers of people” we have to be visible in the world. We cannot simply wait inside the church building and hope that people will come; that would be like waiting for the fish to swim to the net rather than going out to “deep water.” The Second Synod of the Diocese of Reno also raised the concern of Catholics who have “fallen away” or those people who may not feel welcome, which can include those divorced or those with a disability or other potential barriers such as race, culture, age, gender, sexual orientation or economic status. As Church, we can intentionally or unintentionally exclude people or fail to provide an environment of welcome when we gather. In hopes of responding to these concerns, the Pastoral Council joins me in forming a spe-cial Ministry of Welcome for our parish. We are having a meeting on Saturday, February 16, to begin more in-depth discussions and planning, perhaps to include small faith groups, communities within our greater parish community, to help foster bonds among our people and those we might invite to join us or come back. If we want to reach out to someone who either is fallen away from the Church or who may have no faith background, we need a plan to receive them when they come to the church. The mass can be a confusing (and even scary) experience if that is one’s first exposure to the People of God (the Church) – especially if there isn’t a special way for the newcomer or the “returnee” to be welcomed. If you think you might be inter-ested in this ministry or have an idea that might help, please see me or Fr. Lucio or one of the Pastoral Council members. By the way, in case you may not know who is currently on our Pastoral Council, they are: Vicki Monta-gue, Gonzalo Castellanos, Dearly Barba, Monserat Barajas, Ray Gurries, Susan Malone, Baldemar Barajas, and Tillie Pugliesi. Special thanks to them for their counsel and support. Please keep them and our parish in your regular prayers. This Saturday, February 9, Rocio Grady, one of the long-time members of our parish staff, marries Ismael Paz. Rocio’s brother, Padre Carlos Mendoza, a priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart in Chile, will preside at the wedding mass. Congratulations and prayers go out to Ismael and Rocio! May you know great joy, and may your life together be a witness to the love of God of in our world! In these snowy, cold winter days, let us remember in prayer all those who are without a home and living day to day on the streets. We also pray for all those on our parish Homeless Outreach Team who continue to staff the overflow homeless tent one night a week. It is full every night, giving shelter to 50 people who would otherwise have nowhere else to go to get out of the wet and cold. Blessings to all, visitors and parishioners alike, in this 5th week in Ordinary Time

Discipleship Prayers

Good and Gracious God, Your Son, Jesus Christ, invites all people to follow him and become his disciples. Touch our hearts, enlighten our minds, and stir our spirit.

Help us daily to take up our cross and follow him; by living his Word and proclaiming his Good News to those around us.

May our faith in you increase, may our hunger for the Gospel intensify, and may our parish be strengthened as we learn to love one another

as he has loved us. For this we pray, Amen.

Loving God, I thank you for choosing me to be your disciple and the gift of you Son, Jesus.

Help me proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel, by word and deed, today and every day.

Open my heart to the outcast, the forgotten, the lonely, the sick and the poor.

Grant me the courage to think, to choose and to live as a Christian, joyfully obedient to God.

Amen. (Pope Francis April 14, 2013)

Señor, me has mirado a los ojos, sonriendo has dicho mi nombre; en la arena he dejado mi barca, junto a ti, buscaré otro mar.
