Cederberg Mountains Situated near the town of Clanwilliam, the Cederberg Mountains, burnt orange by iron oxide, dominate the landscape. The Cederberg Wilderness Reserve was proclaimed in 1973 and encompasses about 71 000 hectares (175 000 acres) of rugged, mountainous terrain. Tafelberg, which is not to be confused with Table Mountain in Cape Town, and Sneeuberg or snow mountain.

The Cederberg, which forms part of the Cape floral region, is a World Heritage Site, and boasts an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna, including many endangered species, and is home to over 150 kinds of birds, 750 plant species and over 35 species of mammals, including the rare cape mountain zebra which was saved from the brink of extinction. Other mammal species of interest include the cape leopard, bontebok, grey rhebok, bat-eared fox, cape fox, caracal, cape clawless otter, rock hyrax (dassie), klipspringer, aardwolf and aardvark.

Mankind’s oldest nation, the nomadic bushmen tribes lived in these antediluvian mountains for 120 000 years. Here, in their ancestral home, the bushman stained the rocks with oxide pigments, leaving behind a legacy of mystical paintings on rocky overhangs. These depict their myths, rituals and the abundance of life that surrounded them.

A host of enriching, relaxing and invigorating experiences are on offer, including educational talks at the Heritage Centre and guided walks to some of 130 ancient bushman rock art sites that are found in the reserve. You may also participate in an assortment of exhilarating outdoor activities such as nature drives, botanical walks, mountain biking, canoeing, archery and fly-fishing.
