From the rugged peaks of the Blue Mountains to calm, pristine beaches surrounded by natural beauty,

Jamaican residents serve an unforgettable warmth to its visitors.

This large island in the western Caribbean, 95 miles south of Cuba, was discovered by Columbus in 1494

and achieved its independence in 1962.

Jamaica's pleasures and easy access have given rise to many different types of properties, which range

from luxurious, chic hideaways and fully staffed private villas - some of them perched on seaside cliffs, to

popular all-inclusives and charming inns and guest houses.

The island has many natural resources that provide endless ways to have fun. You can climb waterfalls,

golf, or tour via bicycle, moped, motorcycle or jeep. Horseback riding along a beach or in the jungle. Horse

racing is another fun option at Caymanas Park in Kingston. Another adventure that most hotels offer is a

full or half-day of deep sea fishing that include boat, captain, crew and equipment.

Jeep and hiking tours of the Blue Mountains include visits

to rum factories and renowned coffee farms. You can

experience exotic marine life, fans, sponges, and under-

water walls with a dive package. Most hotels provide

licensed diving operators that offer rental equipment and

instruction.

Jamaica also has 120 rivers to enjoy. The Rio Grande in

Port Antonio, is the birthplace of bamboo rafting. Just

imagine floating on a raft down river as your guide sings

folk songs and identifies the surrounding foliage. Or you

could hike along the river with a guide who will reveal

the ancient medicinal remedies found in the surrounding

plants before taking you to a hidden waterfall for a swim.

After a busy day, the tastiest way to get in touch with the

local culture is through the interesting and spicy cuisine.

The national favorites include the fish called "ackee" and

my favorite, mouth-tingling spicy jerk pork and chicken.

This Jamaican delight can be savored on a beach, right

off the wood-burning grill for a casual lunch.

Of course, Jamaica has a reputation for it’s laid-back

atmosphere that is epitomized by the slow groove of its

reggae music. This atmosphere was created by the late

Bob Marley, who is considered one of Jamaica's national

heroes.
