Welcome to Rechenzentrum Kreuznach!
Dear Customers and friends of the AS/400,this is the current RZKH newsletter for march / april 2012 – sent directly from our fall out shelter. We are glad to see that the number of customers and users of the public AS/400 and our other servers is increasing steadily. This show that you are a powerful community which keeps this servers on top. We at RZKH hope to give an important contribution to this community.
Within the next months we will make some changes in the data centre, our offerings and services. This already starts with the format of this newsletter. It will be distributed as a PDF document to be read directly from the website. The old text formatted attachments also were not easy readable and some spam filters deleted them.
Move of data centre The move into our fall out shelter has completed. It was a hard work, but we had also a lot of fun with this.Now our systems work in a very special location which is rather unique – see the picture on the right. It show an IBM AS/400 model 830 in front of the shelter entrance. Behind the server you see the roof of the shelter, 3.5 metres of armoured concrete, fully leafy. This really is "Green IT" :-)
At this location we can offer best possible protection of environmental disaster, fire, storms etc. For our customers in germany we offer storage of really important documents and electronic data processing media.
New offeringsFurthermore we will offer special FTP and NAS servers within the next weeks. You can rent them in complete or partially and send your encrypted data to a very secure location. Please note – this is not an alternative to the usual download server offerings. We will not offer public share of documents – we offer the storage of your important data at a place which was built to survive a war... If you need more information, please contact us. For example we offer 1 GB of storage for private individuals starting at EUR 9,-- a month.
We also store aged data on magnetic media or older server systems for an increasing number of users. If you want to source your old AS/400 applications out to our shelter, please contact us.

Number of users The number of AS/400 servers we host is increasing constantly. Most of the servers are some years old, from customers which put them to our data centre, or sold them to us. The most number of users here are developers and learners. We counted over all servers and found about 27.000 users on public, shared and dedicated servers...
Requests for services and current servers We continue to buy more servers to serve the requests of our customers for machines with V6 or V7 operating system. On the other hand we have a lot of users who want to work with older system releases like V5R2 or V5R3. This shows that RPG and green screan is not dead. A lot of people around the world are still starting to learn RPG. This is very interesting; and we hope to have some interesting offerings for you.
The number of users who answered the last questionnaires is rather low, so we need to estimate which can be the best offer for you. A lot of developers would want to work on the newest release V7R1 for free. Please do not forget, these servers cost a lot of money for hardware and software, so a free offering is not possible at this moment. Also a lot of users ask for the windows based development clients. The older versions like WDSC and RDI can be downloaded from our servers, if you ask us. But the most current windows based develoment environment called "RDP" costs about USD 1000,-- for each user. So this is not possible to give out for free. We keep on talking to IBM about this...
Account changes A not to all users of free and payable AS/400 accounts: We had some problems after the move with the automated requests for account changes. So if you send a request by eMail or on the website and did not see any reaction, please contact us again. The eMail address for this is [email protected] but please: enter a good subject line and text. Some spam filters will kill the email if you only write "question" in the subject line...
PUB1 – the public AS/400Of course the public System PUB1 remains available as the largest public AS/400 in the world, and will be free for entry level users. But in 2012 we need to care about this server to keep it running at an acceptable speed. We are planning to buy some new hardware for PUB1 and how to migrate fast to not have the box offline for several days. If you want to support us, consider changing to an EXPERT or DEVELOPER account; running PUB1 costs a noteable amount of money each month ;-)

dedicated servers We want to advert our dedicated servers for rent. We always have some small and medium servers available for you. As this list changes constantly, please always have a look at

If you are interested in renting a machine – be fast and contact us, else someone other will be the winner ;-) We also buy servers from customers so this list will grow or contain other offerings. If you have special requirements, just ask us with your needs, we still have a lot of space in our shelter.
At the moment we have a bunch of small 9401-150 servers available. This is a perfect machine for single RPG developers or small groups who want to work at release V5R2. These servers can be rented starting EUR 60,-- a month; as you will have all *SECOFR rights on that box, they are a good alternative to a developer account.

Questions and answersWe have a FAQ section on our website which covers most asked questoins to our support. But nevertheless we often receive eMails with the same questions. Please read and pay attention to these topics:
• when you tell a friend about RZKH and our offerings, please send also the link to our web site. Then your friend can directly inform about the public account and does not need to ask us by email.
• we receive a lot of questions regarding "synon" (or "cool plex 2E"). Please note: we cannot offer access to this. Synon is not an IBM software, it is distributed by ComputerAssociates, and they are not willing to give out cheap education licenses.
• Please pay attention when you play around with your user profile. If you change start program or initial menu, please check this with a second display session. It is exhausing to reset 10 user profiles a day because you did not check what you enter... This also relates to lost passwords. For resetting your user profile, please visit www.rzkh.de > user service area > reset user profile.
• We also discourage you to rename your libraries. This might make some trouble at signon, too. Because of the numbers of libraries on PUB1 you should not touch their names.
• To connect to an AS/400 you need a display session program (or called display or 5250 emulation). You can get such a software for example at www.mochasoft.dk (we have no relation to that company), or as google about "tn5250 emulator". We also can offer to download the IBM Client Access software. Please see http://ftp7.rzkh.de/AS400PUBLIC/readme.txt (Server requires authentication. user name and password = "as400")
• a request to all beginners: after you used SBMJOB to run a program in batch, please check with WRKACTJOB if it finished work. Maybe there is an error and the program was stopped with status MSGW. Then please use option 7 to check it out – else we will kill this job after some hours!
