Building Capacity in Food Security in Brazil and Angola
• Six year project (2004 - 2010)
• Funded through the University Partnership for Cooperation and Development (UPCD) program of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
• $1.6 million

• The project addresses the human resource needs required to undertake effective strategies to face Brazil's and Angola's increasing challenge of food insecurity.
• It focuses on the formation of social actors in the region around three cities in Brazil (Araçuaí, Juazeiro, and Fortaleza), and one city in Angola (Huambo).

Expected Impacts
Empowerment of local civil society and governments to form effective and sustainable food and nutrition security councils;
Empowerment of women to participate in decision making on food and nutrition security policies and programs;
Greater links between Brazil and Portuguese-speaking African countries in food and nutrition security initiatives.

• Three courses developed and delivered online
Concepts and Principles in Food Security;
Policies and Programs in Food Security;
Gender and Food Security.

32 Brazilian students (7M/25F) completed the Concepts course.
13 Brazilian students (2M/11F) completed the Policies course.
26 Brazilian students (6M/20F) are now taking the Gender course; and another 26 are taking the Concepts course

Janeiro on August 24, 2005 (52 people in attendance).
Seminar: Research Methodologies in Food Security held in Niteroi on November 21, 2005 (over 80 people in attendance)
We have also had public seminars in Fortaleza (March 2005), Luanda (February 2006), and Diamantina (March 2006)
