These are exciting times for Liz and Rowan Yorath who own Woodbine

Contemporary Arts in Uppingham – not least because their burgeoning success means that their younger son Celyn is now regularly spending a day a week working in the family business (as well as managing his own accountancy career). Liz and Rowan are both accomplished artists in their own right although they are usually so busy discovering and exhibiting new artists that their own work often takes a back seat. “This month we have a mixed show for summer featuring new work by a number of exciting, contemporary artists such as Ailsa Read who paints extraordinary seascapes, and new pieces by Loic Gesnouin. Between 8 and 22 September we are delighted to be showing our own work for the first time in over two years which is very exciting.” Liz’s work is very much memory based from her own experiences and Rowan paints landscapes in a contemporary style – the exhibition contains all new pieces previously unseen.

The Woodbine season continues with a major showing of new work by Charles Harrison between 13 and 27 October. Charles was discovered by the Yoraths just after completing Art School and is now considered an artist of huge significance.

“We are thrilled to be showing Charles’ new work, he is such a huge talent. His paintings are incredible and always sell out fast. We are also very proud that Charles’ work is exclusive to Woodbine Contemporary Arts and are expecting this show to create considerable interest with international buyers. In the latter part of November Loic Gesnouin will be featured in his first one man exhibition – a very exciting season of events to look forward to.”

Jenny Creasey is the multi award winning owner of Itch Gallery in Oakham and has created a range of stunning and affordable contemporary art by some of the most talented independent British artists and makers around. “This month we launch our second exhibition – ‘Creative Creatures’ showcasing animal themed work by artists in a range of different materials including print, ceramics, painting, jewellery and textiles, as well as a range of interior accessories. Expect to see work from Itch Gallery favourites such as Debbie Boon and Nicola Lidstone, alongside work from exciting new makers such as Tom McDowell, who takes his inspiration from children’s art and Katie Procter. Creative Creatures will run from 3 August to 27 September and features a little bit of something for everybody.

It’s always worth a visit to the Goldmark Gallery in Uppingham where a whole array of prints, paintings and ceramics is on display. Here you can delve into history with original Rembrandt etchings, wander amongst the

creations of the greatest artists of the twentieth century or discover the latest contemporary pieces, be they on canvas, in clay or from driftwood. There’s sure to be something to feast your eyes on. Look out for some fantastic ceramics exhibitions happening over the coming months – customers are welcome to handle the pots on display and as most are designed with function in mind, they make wonderful gifts for everyday use in the home. The gallery website is constantly developing – go online to view and purchase stock, read related articles and watch the short artist films produced in-house.

Made is a wonderful independent gallery based in Uppingham and owned by Julia Groundsell who makes and designs her own range of jewellery on site. As well as a bespoke design service specialising in wedding jewellery, Julia gives space to other makers in ceramics, leather, glass and textiles. “This season we will be showing the work of several new artists as well as some of the best local talent. All our artists and their work are listed for you

to browse on our website and exhibits are constantly changing.” Julia tells us that the ethos behind the gallery is the preservation of the art of designing and making things by hand rather than outsourcing these methods to overseas factories. “Made offers something unique for the individual who loves great design and isn’t scared of a little edginess.”

The Old House Gallery has been in the corner of Oakham’s Market Place for over thirty years and its proprietor Richard Clarke is himself a renowned potter and the third generation of his family to be trading in Rutland. Many of the artists and craftsmen represented are unique to the gallery with work coming from local artists and makers from across the UK and Ireland. Richard is also an expert framer and has taught framing all over the world. Expect to find paintings by Michael Gibbison, Des Murrie and Marie Carroll with sculpture by Julie Wilkins and Paul Jenkins.

Peter Jones has been in business in Oakham for many years and his enthusiasm for the arts is well known and infectious. Always a champion of local talent, ‘Backstairs’ is an independent gallery Peter runs from within Swan’s Antiques on Mill Street – well worth a wander round in its own right of course. Peter will talk you through his collection which contains an eclectic mix of work from artists old and new, local and international – a treat to hear the stories behind the pictures from someone so passionate on his subject.

Creative Commision? If you would like to commission something special why not start with a local artist? Sarah Watson is a professional artist and runs Rutland Open Studios who have now added an extra exhibition at the end of the year due to popular demand. If you are thinking of a bespoke gift for Christmas, now is the time to seek out the right artist and to discuss your budget and requirements. Sarah is happy to advise and has a wealth of information on artists and their specialties across the region.

BUYERS GUIDE

Top 10 Back to School Essentials!Mum of three Catherine Batkin looks at the must-have (and most cost-effective)

purchases for the new school term

1 FABULOUS FEET

When it comes to school shoes, it pays to spend a

little extra. In my experience, the cheaper options start

to show serious signs of wear and tear after the fi rst

term’s use. I would recommend Clarks in Stamford as

they do an excellent fi tting service and the staff are very

knowledgeable. However, school holiday times are always

incredibly busy so it may be an idea to take a book to keep

the little ones amused whilst you wait!

2 ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

For young sports enthusiasts, pay a visit to Scarlet

Sky in Stamford. Here they have a select range of clothing

for cricket, rugby and tennis including outerwear, base

layers and footwear as well as some equipment too – or

beat the crowds and buy online at www.scarletsky.co.uk

3 THE WRITE STUFF

Stocking up on notebooks, pens

and pencils has never been easier at

Colemans in Oakham High Street where

they have a great range of stationery,

folders and a whole host of other school

supplies. Up until the 15th September

they are running their double discount

promotion – a superb 20% off all back-

to-school items for students.

4 HEAVENLY HOLDALLSIf you’re fed up with school bags that disintegrate after the fi rst term’s use, then check out the new season range at Lands’ End. Their ClassMates rucksacks come in two different sizes (4-6 year olds and 7-16) and are made of reinforced fabric with a double-strength base to withstand the rough and tumble of the school year.

7 BOOKS & BEYOND Not only Rutland’s premier bookshop, Uppingham Sports & Books is also home to a wide selection of uniform, stationery, sports equipment and greetings cards. But if it’s books you’re after, you’ll fi nd them here – from textbooks to fi ction, non-fi ction and information books too. And you can also use the very speedy free book ordering service if you can’t fi nd what you want on the shelves.

5 MUSIC TO YOUR EARS Anne Mortimer owns Music and More in Oakham and offers three different ways of purchasing musical instruments: buy outright, a rental scheme (great if your son or daughter is trying out an instrument for the fi rst time) and rent to buy. The latter will allow you to rent in the short term with a view to owning the instrument at some point if the tuition goes well and interest hasn’t waned!

8 WATER BABIESMost schools offer swimming lessons these days so you’ll need to ensure your little ones have suitable swimwear, goggles, swimming cap and a swim towel. You’ll fi nd all this and more at Rutland Sports in Oakham where you can also purchase fun swimming aids to build their confi dence in advance.

6 LOVELY LUNCH

The most-important part of the

school day – lunch! Carry your sarnies

in style with a gorgeous lunch pack

from The Kitchen Range Cookshop in

Oakham or Market Harborough. Here

they stock the Pic n Mix insulated

grab bags in a variety of fun designs

as well as Tupperware, cutlery and

fruit holders. Fords of Oakham

also have a great range of lovely

lunchboxes too.

9 KITTED OUT

If you don’t fancy traipsing

all the way into Leicester to search

for school uniform, then pay a

visit to Kids and More in Crown

Walk, Oakham. Here they supply a

large range of school uniform and

accessories such as sportswear, Pex

tights, school socks, ties and winter

woolies. Badged school uniform items

can be ordered in advance via e-mail

or over the phone.

10 USE IT, DON’T LOSE ITThe biggest bugbear of parents nationwide must surely be the item of clothing/lunchbox/pair of

trainers (the list is endless) that gets

lost in the fi rst week of term. The best

iron-on labels I’ve found are by ‘name

it labels’ which have not yet peeled off after nearly a whole school-year, unlike a few other well-known brands

I’ve tried!

14 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING AUGUST 2012

inimum Effort,axi-Mum Effect!

Vanessa Hollander’s mission this month was to seek out the most stylish and wearable maxi dresses that our local boutiques have to offer

Thankfully the maxi dress is still very much in fashion. For many they offer a less scary, more conservative way to wear a summer dress, covering a multitude of sins and camoufl aging hated legs. They look effortlessly stylish and

can be dressed up or down. Yet others (and I admit to having been one of these) still eye them

with fear and trepidation. However, they really are just SO easy to wear! Here’s how…

How to wear a maxi dress: You don’t have to be 6ft tall to wear one. The secret if you’re slightly shorter is to wear wedges! This will give you the height whilst maintaining the casual and boho feel of your maxi. If you are tall, then simple, pretty fl ip fl ops are a great way to dress down your maxi. Don’t forget that you can always have a maxi dress shortened to fi t. Your local dressmaker will be an expert on such alterations, so seek one out. If you feel too ‘dressed up’ then my top tip would be to dress your maxi down with a denim jacket, cropped or boyfriend cardigan. A nifty, cropped denim jacket is defi nitely a girl’s best friend when it comes to dresses maxi or otherwise! If you own a strappier maxi yet feel a bit too exposed for daytime, also consider a long or short sleeved t-shirt underneath. This will automatically make you feel less conscious. Most of all – just wear it! Put it on, forget about it and don’t over think it. You’ll look fabulous – trust me!

summer. Catherine Batkin explores the options that work the best and offer results - fast!

SwEAT iT oUT If you don’t mind putting in a bit of hard work to achieve a buff body, then a 5 day Boot Camp run by personal trainer Rob Willcocks at Catmose Sports Centre could be just for you. Participants do two workouts a day for the five days; all exercise is gym based, and focuses on resistance training so there’s no need for a high level of fitness to take part. Rob also discusses a nutritional plan and a list of the most effective supplements to take for the duration of the course and beyond. A briefing takes place one week prior to the start of the Boot Camp to cover areas such as warm up, weight training, technique, intensity, food & drink, supplements, sleep/wake cycles and stress. Rob told me: “Two Boot Camps have been done so far; the first one resulted in a combined fat loss from the 6 bootcampers of 29.4% and the second had a combined fat loss of 23.5% from 6 people again.” The next Boot Camp is due to take place in mid – late August and places fill up fast. Call Catmose Sports Centre on 01572 490030 to book your place now.

THE PowEr of LiGHT Having heard great reviews of the non-invasive Lipo-Light treatment from Contours (based at energie fitness in Oakham), I was delighted to be invited along for a trial. The Lipo-Light machine works by using LED light energy transmitted via a series of paddles which are strapped to the skin (a very relaxing, warming experience). Tony told me how the system works: “When exercising in fat-burning mode, your fat cells naturally leak their contents around your blood stream to use as energy. By using Lipo-Light prior to exercise, you can effectively target the area in which you want to drain the fat cells. If you then undertake cardio activity the same day, you will burn off the released energy.” I tried the system on my tummy and after a 30 minute session I had lost over 3 inches from 3 measurements taken across the target area! This treatment is at its most effective when combined with a regular exercise routine and if you are aiming to treat localised fat deposits that are proving tough to shift. A course of 8 sessions over 4 weeks is recommended – and results are permanent. Call 07754 615 191 for general enquiries, 01572 724433 for appointments at energie Oakham or visit the website at www.contourslipolight.co.uk

THink YoUrSELf THin Change the way you think about food – forever! Counsellor Kate Holden specialises in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and has just launched a brand new approach to weight loss with a difference. Noticing more and more clients presenting with weight related issues, Kate was inspired to research and develop her own programme aimed at redefining our attitudes to diets. Entitled ‘Food For Thought’ Kate leads small workshop groups at which individuals of any shape, size, age or gender are invited to come along and hear about her psychological approach to controlling and maintaining a healthy weight. Kate explains, “Many thousands of men and women who try dieting often lose weight initially only to find that within a year they regain what they lost plus more, which can be very demoralising. My programme promotes an alternative way of thinking that is proving successful in initial trials. Many volunteers report a completely different attitude towards food resulting in weight loss whilst maintaining a healthy relationship with food.” Price per person is £30 for a half day workshop to include refreshments. For details and dates of workshops, call Kate on 07854 711232. comBo cLASSES It is a well-known fact that doing a diverse range of exercises will offer the fastest results because they work different areas of your body. And it couldn’t be easier to add a touch of variety to your routine with the choices available at USSC. To get your body into fat-burning mode, try out the high energy Zumba workouts, Kick Boxing or Body Pump. You can target that all-important core area (to achieve that longed-for six-pack) with Core Circuits and Express Abs. But the gentle, strengthening approach is an important part of your routine too; Pilates, Yoga and Body Conditioning classes will all increase strength, flexibility and posture. So go along today and get advice on an exercise regime that will work for you. Contact: Uppingham School Sports Centre, Tel: 01572 820830, www.sportscentre.uppingham.co.uk

Dress up your windowMany bathrooms only have one small window and so it is important that you make the best of it. Rutland Shutters can provide a new MDF waterproof range in a selection of new shades. Countesthorpe Blinds can help you with choosing the right product for you from a simple roller or venetian blind available in a myriad of colours and patterns through to whitewashed shutters.

For those who enjoy outstanding hospitality combined with spectacular scenery, there isn’t a more civilised destination.

Oundle Travel has many years of experience creating itineraries with just the right balance of duration together with a wide range of hotels. Many visitors will spend four or five days in Cape Town before journeying through quaint villages and seaside towns along the Garden Route, further up the coast and into the Eastern Cape, where malaria free game reserves attract visitors in search of a safari experience. Viewing wild animals in their natural habitat is quite simply thrilling and there are many ways to experience this.

For an introductory tour of South Africa’s Cape region Oundle Travel’s 7 nights ‘Taste of South Africa’ tour flies directly into Cape Town with British Airways and is available as a Private Escorted Journey or a Self-Drive from £1895.00 per person.

For a superb safari experience ‘The Great

Botswana Safari’ is a privately escorted journey offering the chance to explore some of the most remote and pristine wilderness areas in Africa. The journey takes in The Chobe National Park and the exceptionally beautiful Okavango Delta. From £3160.00 per person for 9 nights inclusive of British Airways flights.

Sarah was sponsored by Rick Stein to the Guild of Food Writers, the professional

association of food writers, authors, journalists and broadcasters in the UK, in 2006. As a member of the Guild of Food Writers Sarah is regularly invited to fascinating food workshops and events, the most recent of which was the Feeding the Millions: Food at the 2012 Games, at Imperial College London. Guest speakers Jan Matthews and Jeni Pearce delivered a spectacularly thought-provoking talk.

This will be the first Olympic Games ever with a food policy and it is Jan Matthews, Head of Catering, Cleaning and Waste for LOCOG who is spearheading the Olympic food vision. “This will be the biggest and most complex peacetime catering operation in the world,” says Jan. The 2012 London Games will be a tastier, healthier, greener games celebrating the great diversity and quality of British food delivered at affordable prices. Every menu has been tasted and every dish priced.

MacDonald’s, a company that Jan has huge respect for, are a corporate sponsor of the games, and committed to sourcing British

chicken (Red Tractor standard). They will provide only 10% of the food to spectators with British producers supplying much of the rest. Local producers were invited to a ‘meet the buyers day’, where contractors did a blind tasting. One of these unbranded success stories is cupcake makers Frost & Snow, based in Birmingham. Contractors were impressed by their product and story where homeless people have been given a chance at employment in an effort to turn their lives around.

Jan went on to say, “I know people are at the Games for the sport but actually what we want them to say is that the curry we had was great too!” Food served right across the games is going to be healthy and inviting. Jan’s food vision has become a reality where the link between food and sport will become a lasting legacy of the Games.

Feeding the athletesOur second speaker was Guild member Jeni Pearce, Head of Performance Nutrition for the English Institute of Sport and Catering Advisor to the BOA. A chef, dietician, nutritionist and teacher, Jeni along with 15 other nutritionists, has the great responsibility of fine-tuning the athletes. “We are feeding the ‘elite athlete’,” says Jeni. “We take it strongly as a science. Of all the sciences, nutrition may have more to offer the athlete than any other as it is clear that a poor diet will prevent the athlete from achieving their

potential.” She went on to say, “The athletes are human machines. One kilo can make a crucial difference to performance results.” Nutrients

play a big role in the diet of the 2012 Olympian making the relationship between Jeni and the Camp GB chefs a critically important one. Jeni explained that the athletes’ menus are trying to take advantage of the latest science as it relates to diet, where antioxidants (lots of vegetables), black current powders, Vitamin C, Omega 3 and plenty of hydration are essentials. The Team GB holding camp is in Loughborough. Here, Jeni will have helped many first time

Olympians adjust to the environment of being in the camp where she and the other nutritionists oversee the individual diets of every athlete.

Jeni is hopeful that this commitment to nutrition, food and food hygiene will have a knock-on effect for the general public. She and seven other scientists, dieticians and nutritionists have written an 80 page booklet, A Guide to Nutrition and Hydration for Active Healthy Lifestyles, which for her will be a lasting legacy of the Games. The booklet aims to get people thinking more about the food they eat and how eating healthily fine tunes the body.

EATING OUT

The Italian Way of Food “One of the oft most challenges we receive, as Italian restaurateurs in the UK, is the suggestion that some of our classics, such as lasagne, carbonara, Bolognese and tiramisu, are ‘not right’”, says Sarah Poli of Firenze and Boboli

The problem we face is the

anglicised perception of dishes that are quintessentially Italian.

Take the much loved Lasagne - in Italy it is sparse in ragu and béchamel, heavily layered with pasta and altogether more dry than the British like. A good lasagne in Italy will stand tall on a plate, not sit slumped in a bowl coated in sauce. Furthermore, each region and each family will have its own traditions of “assembly”. These methods may be as subtle as the use of a local cheese or, in the case of Lino’s mother, layered with wafer thin cooked ham onto each sheet of pasta. It’s delicious and has proved a real hit at Boboli, even if we do fi nish it off with a dollop of extra sauce!

Risotto is another contentious one. Made properly it has a subtle hint of crunch to the rice with a beautiful natural creaminess given by the slow release of starch, a knob of butter to emulsify and a healthy handful of parmesan! People travel for miles for a good risotto. The anglicised version is often over cooked, almost like tapioca, and often given an unhealthy slug of cream. Not so tasty and not so healthy either.

When Lino and I fi rst lived together one of our fi rst “domestics” was all about Bolognese!

I confi dently decided to make it for my lovely Italian. The principles in my execution were ok but apparently my heavy handedness with the Dried Green Herbs was a shocker!

The truth of the matter is that the Italian way of food is really one of the most healthy, especially if we steer clear of the temptation to anglicise it. The Italians don’t use that much cream, and pasta in Italy is usually served with suffi cient sauce simply to coat the pasta. They even use particular pasta shapes aimed at complementing the sauce but I would need a whole second page to tell you about that!

A presto! – Until the next time.

New Menu at The Pavilion, Stapleford Park Abigail Richardson tests the Pavilion to its extremes!

The Pavilion at Stapleford Park has recently launched an exciting new menu, offering a relaxing dining experience in an informal and comfortable environment overlooking the 18th hole of the

Stapleford Park Championship golf course. David Ellams, Stapleford Park’s Head Chef, has created a unique menu which consists of cooked breakfast, homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, noodle and pasta dishes as well as weekly chef’s specials.

There were 7 of us so we sampled a broad range – from Spaghetti Bolognese and Lasagne with garlic bread for the kids (half portions, which were huge and half price and devoured) to an enormous chicken, bacon and avocado Ciabatta with fries and salad (£7.50) for Pete, a succulent 8oz homemade beef burger, tomatoes, toasted bun, chips (£8.50) for James (“You don’t get this quality in New York”), Singapore egg noodles (£12) for Michelle (“Nice and spicy”) and a light and divine salad, specially made for me (well an extended starter), - Goat’s cheese roulade, celeriac salad, black pepper oil. Dessert for those who can afford the calories – half size ice creams with choky sauce and a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream (£5) big enough to feed the table. We were impressed. The value for money was incredible – I couldn’t believe the bill or lack thereof. And we all had a tipple; well the kids had juice, but still!

Lots of fun things too with sporting events and offers on the big screen TV as well as Sunday roasts for £10 or £5 for kids…I would encourage you to go but I want to be sure of a table! For more information and to view the Pavilion menu visit www.staplefordpark.com/dining/pavilion-dining or to reserve a table call Tel: 01572 787044. The Pavilion Menu is available from 12.00 - 17.00 daily. Breakfast is available from 08.00 - 12.00 and Ciabattas are available from 10.00 onwards.

Summer garden party favourites

This issue, just for once I’m moving away from food and focusing on my other favourite topic – drink! At our

sister pubs, The Olive Branch and Red Lion Inn (Stathern, Leicestershire), we have developed a range of seasonal country cocktails – including Hendrick’s gin with cucumber and elderfl ower; vodka and cream soda with fresh strawberries; and our special Pimm’s with extra gin and marinated red fruits. Here are three long drinks perfect for summer.

Three long drinks recipes. By Sean Hope, head chef at the Olive Branch, Clipsham

See my cookery demonstrationsAs usual, I’m running a series of cooking demos throughout the year at both the Red Lion Inn and Olive Branch. At each I focus on ‘back to basics’ cooking, using fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Coffee is served at 10am and the demo begins at 10.30am. At 12.30pm the three-course menu you have just seen demonstrated is served to you for lunch. The price is £45 per person at the Olive Branch. Call 01780 410 355 to book.

HOME & GARDEN

With Water in Mind“Top priorities in the garden this month will be watering, harvesting and weeding”, says Debbie Cooke of Creative Garden Design

28 RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING AUGUST

It’s predicted that our climate will continue to warm up and our summer rainfall levels

will continue to decline. So it’s not surprising that after two

unusually dry winters, some parts of the country are suffering from a drought. Water authorities announced hosepipe bans in some counties earlier this year, which were promptly followed by some of the wettest weeks on record.

‘This is the wettest drought in history!’Whatever the weather does our planters, hanging baskets, vegetables and greenhouse plants will still need watering. It only takes a few hot, dry spells to quickly empty a water butt.

Even if you don’t live in an area suffering from drought it is always wise to be water conscious. Rainwater is much better for plants than tap water as it doesn’t contain the same chemicals. This is particularly important for ericaceous plants (Lime haters), like blueberries, Azaleas, Camellias and Rhododendrons.

Saving Water: Probably the most important thing is not to waste water and to collect as much as possible. • Water butts are a must and the more the merrier! They come in so many guises these days; there are oak barrels, plastic butts in all shapes and sizes from conventional

green ones to funky talking pieces like this, for the smallest terrace or balcony See www.urban-allotments.com • I have friends who acquired a series of (now redundant) black plastic dustbins from uk.freecycle.org and with the addition of a rainwater diverter and some plastic pipe created a series of linked water butts. • Grey water from washing vegetables, dishes (not dishwashers or washing machines) or even people can be used on the garden. Use caution on young or delicate plants.• Water harvesters are a big investment but probably a worthwhile one long-term.

Use it wisely: • Irrigation systems are usually allowed even when hosepipes and sprinklers are not. • Water at the coolest times of day, early morning or early evening is most efficient.

• If you are going to have to water why not make every drop count and grow plants to eat? E.g. hanging baskets with Tumbling tomatoes and basil or just herbs can look very attractive.• Don’t forget the wildlife; a supply of fresh water is essential for birds to keep their feathers clean and of course to drink.

Left: This funky little chap was spotted earlier this year at the ‘Edible Garden Show’ at Stoneleigh

Mulch, mulch, mulch• When the ground is moist, mulch will help to keep it that way as well as keeping down the weeds. There is a multitude of different types available on the market these days from gravel and wood chips in a variety of sizes to glass chippings, cocoa shells and seashells. More are being discovered as we try to use waste materials from industrial processes. Which Plants?• Choose plants which are more suited to drier Mediterranean climates as, once established, these will be much more resilient to drought. Do bear in mind that these will require good drainage as they do not like their feet wet in winter. Look for plants with grey, hairy or needle like leaves e.g. Lavender, Rosemary or Sage. As a rough guide plants with large, succulent, dark green leaves tend to require more water and tolerate more shade. • Plant a meadow: wildflowers are undemanding, once established, beautiful and wildlife friendly. A closely shorn golf green however, is guaranteed to look scorched in summer without considerable maintenance.

Left: This colourful selection will tolerate dry conditions once established: Purple Sage, Alchemilla Mollis, Iris, French Lavender, Bronze Fennel, and Alliums

In the Vegetable GardenWeed: Keep on top of weeding to prevent your plants being deprived of moisture, nutrients and light. This should be minimal this month as most of the ground will be well covered with maturing crops.Water: When it is hot and dry and you have to water, give the plants a good soaking to encourage deep roots. Plants stressed through lack of water will soon run to seed.Mulch: Some vegetables lend themselves to being grown through mulches or membranes; sweet corn and cabbages are good examples. Mulch moist soil where you can to reduce weeding and retain moisture but watch out for slugs!

Harvest: Pick crops as soon as they are ripe, the same principles apply as for deadheading flowers. A crop will stop producing once it has formed seed.Plant: Little and often prevents gluts of vegetables, now’s the time for planting some quick maturing crops like early varieties of carrots, peas and turnips. Protected from colder weather these will see you into autumn. There is still time to sow more salad leaves and spring cabbage if you haven’t already.

ContainersKeep your containers in tip top condition at the height of summer with these few simple tips; Water: Using moisture retaining crystals in your

planters and hanging baskets helps to retain moisture, and watering at the coolest times of day is most efficient. Feed: Adding slow release fertiliser when planting up alleviates the need for regular feeding. Alternatively feed fortnightly or even once a week with a general purpose fertiliser (refer to instructions on the pack).Deadhead: It doesn’t just keep plants looking tidy, it prolongs flowering. A plant’s purpose is to reproduce by producing seed, removing flowers before they form seeds encourages the plant to produce more flowers. Deadhead a minimum of once a week, ideally every day or so.

At Your Service…. Sarah Rivett’s catering company, Rutland Gourmet is used to providing the finest cuisine to clients across the region so didn’t skip a heartbeat when guests at a recent function turned out to be very special indeed.

Sarah and her team were commissioned to fulfil the catering requirement at the wedding of Emily McCorquodale and James Hutt after their marriage in Stoke Rochford. The bride, whose mother Sarah is the sister of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, had been impressed by the food provided by Rutland Gourmet at a wedding she had attended.

“Emily and James chose a beautiful summer menu, entirely in keeping with their country wedding and the reception which took place in a stunning marquee at Emily’s home. “For Sarah it was business as usual until she noticed three familiar names on the seating plan. Next to arrive were Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge accompanied by her husband Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry.

“It was certainly very exciting and we gave the staff a special briefing before they served the Royals but we aim for the highest possible standards for all our clients so all nerves quickly disappeared and we concentrated on the job in hand. The catering and service were executed perfectly and I could not have been prouder of my team but it was certainly one to remember and a real privilege to be there.”Contact: The Rutland Gourmet Tel: 01572 747909 www.rutlandgourmet.co.uk

Otters – one year on!Otters Smokehouse and Deli on Mill Street, Oakham, celebrates its first birthday this month

The shop has been a phenomenal success and has been embraced by the people of Rutland. When they opened their doors in August 2011, many people commented: “This is just what Oakham needs!” and from the numerous, now regular, customers it would seem the consistently high standards maintained by Leo and his team have been appreciated.

Leo says: “It has been a busy year but an enjoyable one; it is a lot of hard work but people genuinely appreciate the extra effort we make, so it makes it worthwhile. Our wide range of cheeses sell brilliantly, as does the naturally smoked fish from our Suffolk smokehouse and the self-service fresh olives and antipasti bar is always busy. We have provided lots of platters of charcuterie, cheeses, fish and sandwiches for lunches for local businesses and our hampers have been proving great for gifts - particularly at Christmas, but also for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays and for picnics, including Royal Ascot!

“We are treating ourselves to a cheese birthday cake so do come and share it with us when you see our birthday balloons up outside in August! These make a great alternative to traditional celebratory cakes and are particularly popular for weddings.”Otters also has a fabulous new website which enables you to order online in case you can’t get in to the shop! www.ottersdeli.co.uk

Open Water Swimming comes to Rutland!New local sports and fitness training company inspire2tri have announced they are partnering with Anglian Water to bring open water swimming to Rutland for the first time ever! Mary Hardwick and Gail Warner, fitness professionals and Great Britain Age Group triathletes who head up inspire2tri, have worked tirelessly over the past 9 months to ensure the venture can go ahead.

With a multitude of competitive swimming knowledge, qualifications and health and safety experience between them, the team from Anglian Water felt that Mary and Gail were the perfect partners with whom to launch this exciting new initiative. Organised swimming will take place at Whitwell Creek on a 500m course offering unrivalled safety standards.

Until now, the only time competitors could go in the water were for the Dambuster and Pre-Vitruvian triathlons - but scheduled events this year already include dates in August for junior and senior members of local swimming and triathlon clubs to experience open water swimming, a pre-Vitruvian swim experience and a charity swim on September 9th in aid of Epilepsy Action.

Together with their delivery partners Rutland Watersports, Mary and Gail then plan to launch regular club swimming next year in which experienced swimmers or new swimmers certified through inspire2tri will be able to use this wonderful natural facility – keep checking the inspire2tri website for further details in the coming months. Fresh hope for debilitating skin conditionsA new skin camouflage clinic has just opened its doors at The Broad Street Practice in Stamford, offering hope for local people living with disfigurement or skin damage. Whilst the clinic has been running successfully for a number of years in London’s Harley Street and Yorkshire, this is the first time that a specialist skin camouflage service has become available to the region.

Varama is the brainchild of Vanessa Jane Davies who founded the company in 2010 with the aim of bridging the knowledge gap that currently exists about skin camouflage products and enabling the consumer to have direct access to the benefits they provide. Varama cover creams are simple to blend and easy to apply, whilst the versatile colour range offers variants for white, Asian and black skins across all ages.

The creams can be used from the age of five and Vanessa has seen amazing results in children who have endured the psychological damage of bullying due to skin conditions that make them stand out from their peers.

Vanessa told me: “I am working closely with local hospitals and GP services to ensure that referrals can be made to the clinic for anyone with a medical condition such as Vitiligo, scarring, birthmarks, burns, Eczema and Psoriasis. The cover creams are also great for cosmetic problems too and can successfully cover dark spots, pigmentation problems, flushing of the skin and unwanted tattoos.” For your appointment contact: Vanessa Jane Davies, Varama Skin Clinic, The Broad Street Practice, Stamford, PE9 1PG, [email protected], Tel: 0207 4678466

The choir meets on Tuesday evenings at St Mary and St John’s school in North Luffenham and has developed a repertoire of mainly popular songs, but also traditional favourites and songs from musicals.

Membership of the choir is steadily increasing, with numbers averaging over 50 at rehearsals but newcomers are always welcome. New members do not have to audition and no experience is necessary with Tracy giving help and support to everyone. If anyone is interested in joining the choir please email Tracy on [email protected], or call Tel: 01780 729006

POINTS OF INTERESTBRAUNSTON All Saints’ Church dates back to the 13th century. It is notable for its medieval wall-paintings and odd-looking clock face. As you pass the west end of the church you will see a pagan fi gure standing at the foot of the tower. Theories abound as to what it signifi es or exactly how old it is.

Immediately beside the church is an open access area, where there is evidence of a medieval ridge and furrow fi eld system and possibly a water mill and dam. There is a helpful information board a few yards down Wood Lane, just south of the church. THE RIVER GWASH fl ows to the south of the village. This sinuous stream subsequently runs into Rutland Water and then on to Ryhall before taking a big loop and joining the River Welland to the east of Stamford.

DIRECTIONS

1Cross over the stile at the west end of the church (the right-hand path), walking in a westerly direction close to the right edge of

the fi eld. Cross a ditch and then the diminutive River Gwash over a footbridge.

2 Once over the river, follow a broad track between two fi elds as far as a gate. Once through the gate, you will soon pass South Lodge

Farm on your right hand side. At the end of a long, thin strip of a fi eld, cross to the other side of the tiny stream and follow it on the other side to the end of the next fi eld.

3 At this point the path cuts diagonally across the fi eld (a tiny pond on your

immediate left) to a stile in the far left-hand corner under an ash-tree, but most people appear to walk around the right hand side and then up. Once over this stile, head across a fi eld (wet in winter) towards an opening at the top of the hill.

4 At this point you get fi ne views of the Chater Valley to the south. Join the

bridleway and head right (north), until you reach a road

5 Take the right hand path (there are two), which crosses a fi eld to another road.

Turn right onto the road, and at the T-junction cross over on to the bridleway opposite. Stay on this bridleway, and do not be tempted by fi rst a path and then a bridleway that branch off to the left. The route is heading north east.

6 Cross the River Gwash again via a footbridge, then up a track and across

a road, continuing to head NE, through two further gates and up a hill

7 At a gate on the right, you will see the bridleway heading across a grassy

pasture. Towards the end of the second fi eld, a gate takes you into a green lane heading south back to Braunston. Turn right when you reach the road, and you will soon be back at the start.

The High Sherriff of Leicestershire

Way back in 849AD on June 1st St. Wistan, the Christian Prince of Mercia, was most

foully murdered by his cousin, the dastardly Brifardus, who wanted the throne. The village of Wistow in Leicestershire takes its name from the original Wistanstowe which means ‘holy place of Wistan’.To this day it’s said that human hair grows through the Wistow churchyard grass on the first day of June reminding us of the saint’s violent end. Shiver-making stuff – but happily Wistow today is famous for rather nicer reasons.

The delightful Wistow Hall is the family home of the new High Sheriff of Leicestershire, Richard Brooks. History repeats itself because Richard’s father Timothy also held this senior Crown appointment back in 1980 and went on to become Lord-Lieutenant of the county between 1989 and 2003, subsequently being awarded a knighthood. The Brooks family home is rich in fascinating history and gave shelter to ill-fated King Charles I on 5th June 1645, the night before his defeat at the Battle of Naseby. A previous owner, Sir Henry Halford, was doctor to poor, mad King George III and the Hall was the site of groundbreaking research into the design of modern bullets. During the dark days of World War II Wistow gave shelter to bombed out blitz babies and expatriate German Lutheran priests.

Nowadays Wistow Hall is renowned for its award-winning Maze and Rural Centre. Complete with cafe/bistro, garden centre and shops the Centre is a hugely popular day out for visitors from far and near. A newly built art gallery has recently joined the other Wistow attractions.

Created High Sheriff of Leicestershire on 10th April Richard Brooks originally seemed destined to run the family farm and estate. Instead he chose a career as a Chartered Surveyor and between 1980 and 2007 he worked at the London head office of Lane Fox which then merged with Strutt & Parker to create one of the largest independent property

advisors in the country. Richard has now relocated back to his roots and heads up a team responsible for all aspects of country houses and farms in the East Midlands. What little spare time he has allows him to indulge his interests in tennis, shooting and golf and he is a devoted dendrophile (a lover of trees to you and me!)

His right hand woman is his wife Diana. Married for 26 years the couple have 2 sons and a daughter. The whole family is totally committed to the diversified Wistow estate and work together to ensure its continued success. An annual ‘Concert in the Park’ (in

Caroline Aston meets Richard Brooks at home, Wistow Hall

collaboration with Wigston Rotary) regularly raises sums in excess of £10,000 for local charities like Rainbows, LOROS and the Air Ambulance service and Diana was personally responsible for establishing the prestigious annual Art for Youth Exhibition in London. The Exhibition has raised over £1 million for UK youth over the last 24 years, an amazing result.

During his year as High Sheriff Richard has decided to raise awareness of Warning Zone/Crime Beat, the outstanding charity based at

Frog Island in Leicester. Warning Zone, founded back in 2006, aims to help children understand the risks encountered in daily life, personal responsibility, peer pressure issues and the consequences of life choices. It’s very much a jewel in Leicestershire’s crown. As Richard and Diana say, they will enjoy each moment of his year of office, discovering all that’s good in their county, speaking well of it and celebrating the essence of all that is Leicestershire. We wish them well.
