Throughout the years, not-for-profit agencies have confronted an array of challenges. This past year is no exception; in fact, the unprecedented economic downturn serves to intensify the trials and tribulation that RRJFS is facing.

The gap between financial resources and demands for services is widening each day. Managers are struggling to keep up with the needs of children at risk, children with special needs, the frail and elderly, the indigent, the addicted and the psychologically stressed. Clearly, we are talking about serving the most vulnerable members of our community.

Our Mission: RRJFS helps families and individuals of all ages by offering a comprehensive range of counseling, support and educational programs for all members of the community.

The agency realizes this is the time to return to its basic services:• RRJFS will provide therapy for children, teens, adults, couples and families experiencing intense stress.• The agency is mandated to address the growing problem of hunger among Jews. This is accomplished through the work of the Forster Family

Kosher Food Pantry.• Comprehensive programs and services will be provided to our older adults, highlighted by the congregate kosher meal site.• The Welcome Home Drop-in-Center continues to respond to the needs of the chronically mentally ill.• Holocaust survivors are responded to in a most caring and sensitive manner and enjoy the opportunity to socialize at Café Europa.

RRJFS expresses its appreciation to the Area Agency on Aging and the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, which enabled us to enhance our services to the elderly; the Able Trust and United Way of Palm Beach County, for reaching out to special needs populations; Children’s Services Council, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the Sun-Sentinel, for funding our programs serving the needs of youth; and the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, for facilitating homecare and emergency grant services for our many Holocaust Survivors. This is by no means an inclusive listing of the many donors/funders that we have had the privilege of working with this past year, each of whom is individually acknowledged in the body of this Annual Report.

Because of this broad-based array of support, RRJFS is making a difference in people’s lives. Thank you for being our partner in this humanitarian endeavor.

Palm Beach County has a higher percentage of senior citizens than any US county of its size, with over 144,000 seniors living in South Palm Beach County. Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service has been serving the needs of seniors since 1979. Utilizing the feedback from community needs surveys and focus groups, our Board determined that building a Multiservice Senior Center in west Delray Beach will facilitate the delivery of optimal supports and programming for active Baby Boomers and frail seniors. The extensive study of the needs of seniors living in our area was completed in conjunction with legislators, homeowner associations, and collaborative partners. The Center will be located in the hub of a dense senior area, an area designated by the Area Agency on Aging as “high needs,” attributable to poverty level, disability status, age structure of the population 60 and older, and/or a large minority population.

The Center will offer an array of life-sustaining and life-enhancing programs and will target the frail elderly and the emerging Baby Boomer senior popu-lations. Educational opportunities, health screenings, recreational activities, social services and volunteerism will be strong elements of the Center.

The goal for this new Center is to be able to provide a full day’s activities, including lunch and transportation, so that an 80 year old man or woman can be picked up in the morning from home, attend a class or discussion group,

have lunch, go to a bereavement or caregiver support group and be brought safely home again in the afternoon. Or a Baby Boomer can drive in and take a computer or language lesson, a knitting class, have lunch at our café staffed by volunteers and participants in the Welcome Home Program (serving the chronically mentally ill), make some telephone reassurance calls to the more isolated elderly, have a dance or Tai Chi lesson, play bridge, or tutor or mentor a youngster brought in to the center from a local school.

The Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service Senior Center will be an ultra high- efficiency building designed to be an accessible, environmentally state of the art facility utilizing the latest technology available for efficient lighting, appliances, HVAC, and building materials which will translate into initial and ongoing cost savings. Indoor and outdoor spaces will be effectively designed to best deliver the following types of services/programs to seniors:

• Emergency Preparedness and Response Center for Assistance During Hurricanes or Other Crises

• Single Point of Entry for Information and Referral for Senior Services at RRJFS & the Community

• Holocaust Assistance Programs

• Congregate Meal Site

• Media Center for Entertainment, Discussion Groups (book clubs, current events, movie reviews)

• Media Center for Classes (e.g. computers)

• Café

• Food Pantry

• Center for Geriatric Studies (providing training for students and professionals, and conferences to educate seniors)

• Health Fairs, Senior Fairs

• Outdoor Gardening Space

• Socialization Areas for Recreational Activities (cards, games, etc.)

• Financial Assistance

• Volunteer programs

• Support Groups

My father is a Holocaust Survivor, residing in Century Village~my mother passed away in July 2004. Since Kathy has become my father’s social worker, she has been such a tremendous source of comfort for me and my family. I reside in Yardley, Pennsylvania, and we have made many attempts for my father to move up here. He is not ready, just “thinking about it.” Kathy has gone beyond the typical social services - she is just a gift to me and my family! She is truly a compassionate and caring woman and I am so grateful she is in my father’s life. Because of the distance, there is great stress on me in making sure he is OK and his needs are being met. Kathy has always been there for my dad.

I just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate her work. She is truly a remarkable person!

When I first learned that my parents’ case was being reassigned to a new Care Link Case Manager I was concerned, as I knew that my parents did not deal well with change (especially since they felt that they didn’t need help in the first place). Within moments of my first conversation with Lauryn, however, my fears were completely assuaged: Lauryn and I spoke on the phone for almost 40 minutes and by the time we finished our conversation, I was assured that my parents were in good hands. The next six months completely confirmed that initial impression. Lauryn has helped us all through some of the most difficult times imaginable. Not only has she been consistently kind, humorous, upbeat, and diligent, but she has shown such love and dedication to doing her

best for her clients. When neither my brother nor I could be there, Lauryn was. After my mother’s funeral, it was very difficult for me to leave Florida; in fact, the only reason I felt that I could leave was because I knew Lauryn would watch out for my dad. Throughout his time in hospice, Lauryn came to be with him and to be with us - the amount of comfort she gave us cannot be described in words. Even after my father’s death, Lauryn has continued to be of inestimable help to us; I can’t imagine how any of us would have gotten through the last six months without her.

Mostly MotownMore than 300 people attended the Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service December 1st Black Tie benefit at The Polo Club in Boca Raton, where they danced the night away to the Motown hits provided by the Soul Street Orchestra. The Gala enabled RRJFS to raise money for its myriad programs. The evening was chaired by Donna and Michael Mullaugh.

Auction prizes included a one hour ride in a 1950’s Navy fighter training airplane, Saks Fifth Avenue shopping sprees, artwork, sports memorabilia and luxury vacation packages.

Golf tournaMentOne hundred and forty supporters of Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service enjoyed a golf tournament, barbeque and cocktail party at the The Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, chaired by Isabel and Arnold Friedman of St. Andrews. The afternoon’s proceeds benefited the programs

This year we offered 5,375 clinical sessions to our mental health services patients. We also ran 9,157 hours of caregiver and bereavement support groups.

welcoMe HoMeWelcome Home, our daily drop-in center for the chronically mentally ill in Delray Beach, had 3,116 visits, an increase of 5% over last year. More than 76 people availed themselves of occupational therapy, socialization, encouragement and support. They enjoyed eight outings, including the Morikami Museum and a two hour cruise. Welcome Home’s visitors learned how to make friends, improve life skills, apply for a job and deal with anger and isolation. In doing so, they grew in self-esteem and independence.

services for Holocaust survivorsRuth Rales Jewish Family Service provided life sustaining services to 140 Holocaust Survivors, 27 of whom came to us this year. RRJFS assisted with grocery shopping, laundry, cooking, housekeeping, personal care and transportation to doctors.

RRJFS also provided $45,000 in emergency grants to needy survivors, who range from 75-85 years old, to help cover the costs of hearing aids, dental work, personal emergency alerts and housing.

RRJFS hosted two very successful Café Europa luncheons for a total of 1,000 people who were seated at tables by their home countries, and reconnected with friends and relatives, some of whom they had not seen in 60 years.

In addition, RRJFS is working with local law firms to assist survivors in applying for restitution for work done in the ghettos. We have already provided three legal clinics in the Boca and Delray areas and are planning to offer more. Over 150 survivors have expressed a desire to fill out the applications.

As the needs of the community grew, Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service increased the number of people it assisted. Last year, we helped 1,250 people and disbursed $365,000 – an increase of 18% from the prior year.

Camp BReakaway CeleBRaTeS iTS 11Th yeaRCamp Breakaway attracted 107 children, an increase of 16% over last year. Altogether this wonderful program, founded in 1998, has fulfilled the dreams of more than 1,107 children.

Hands on tzedaKaH HelPs caridadThanks to the continuing generosity of Hands on Tzedakah, we were able to continue to provide a bilingual social worker to the Caridad Center. Founded in 1989, the Caridad Center provides free medical and dental care to a large population of agricultural workers, laborers and the working poor of Palm Beach County.

Note: “Hands on Tzedakah” continues to fund this program. Caridad Center serves all low income individuals who have no access to healthcare in the Palm Beach County area.

• we completed our first year of the teen connect Program through a grant from the Hans and Mary stratmann intergenerational fund of the community foundation for Palm Beach and Martin counties. Thirty-one intergenerational matches were made, exceeding our target number by 41%. The grant was renewed for a second year.

• The volunteer services department welcomed three undergraduate students during the summer of 2007 as part of their college internship program. each student was placed in a volunteer assignment based on her college major and specific area of interest. we look forward to developing new volunteer opportunities in our agency for other young people.

• The Junior chaplaincy Program was launched in october 2007. students from donna Klein Jewish academy assisted a parachaplain in conducting shabbat services at the shirley Gould House once a month for the entire school year.

We are writing this note to let you know how much we value and appreciate your incredible team member Kathy Porges. Kathy entered our lives in October 2008 to be the Case Manager for my parents. Since none of the children live near them, we often felt helpless and out of the loop – even though we talked with them frequently over the phone. No matter how many good suggestions we would make, they were set in their ways and quite resistant to accepting our recommendations. Enter Kathy. She has an uncanny way of breaking down barriers and was able to reach my dad in ways that I never thought possible. I believe that she accomplishes this because she is so caring, patient, empathetic, diplomatic and so super smart! Kathy was able to cultivate a trusting relationship with my father --- and that I can tell you is huge! My dad is a very proud and stubborn man who doesn’t trust easily ---- and I can tell you that he thinks the world of her. My family has been involved in the CareLink system for a few years now. We have worked with a few different social workers, all of whom were very attentive and tried very hard to satisfy the needs of our ailing parents. However, when Laurie Intondi was assigned to the family, we received a level of care, concern and talent beyond our expectations. I can honestly say that our parents’ lives have been improved through our relationship with CareLink and Laurie. I would recommend this service to anyone, without question.

I am writing this letter because I want to express my gratitude for the help that Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service in Boca Raton has given to two Holocaust survivors, my late wife and I. In 1997, my late wife got a stroke, and ever since that time, while my wife was alive and still after her death in 2004, the social workers of the Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service went to great lengths to support us in times of need. I am not sure how we could have survived without this support and aid. The current social worker, Lila Vaughn, who is assigned to work with Holocaust survivors, is a constant support to me. Without her attention, I am not sure how I could go on. She is an excellent listener and eager to help me in any way that she can. I am reassured that I can count on her and your organization for needed help. I even mentioned this support in a Holocaust publication.

I am grateful that the Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service Center has not forgotten Holocaust victims like me. I am especially thankful that a social worker like Lila Vaughn is there to support me and other Holocaust survivors. Although our numbers are dwindling, it is reassuring that we who have survived the atrocities of the Holocaust are not forgotten by the Jewish Family Service.
