Welcome to the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts Dance Department’s 2017 Spring Dance Concert! We are excited to present this beautiful culmination of a full year of training, technique, and choreography There are many people to thank, but I want to start with you – thank you for supporting our program and our dancers.

I want to thank Principal Barnaby Payne & Assistant Principal Caitlin Boyle, the counseling staff– Clint Calimlim, Carissa Jow, and Ben Rom-bro, the front desk staff– Paulette Cauthorn and Merrill Komai, and all of the teachers at Asawa SOTA. From auditions and registration to advising, teaching, and encouragement, this group supports our stu-dents, both academically and artistically to perform at their highest level.

I want to thank my amazing families in the Dance Department, who fundraise and volunteer at our events. Athea Lazara is my wonderful Parent Liaison this year, and we could not have done it without her.

I want to thank Sharon Ellsworth, Joyce Zavarro, and Bayan Jamay, who have generously donated their time and expertise on our judging panels for placement and concert auditions. Elvia Marta is a source of inspiration, and advice when needed, as well as a benefactor of the program and a volunteer judge. Our pianist, Lucy Hudson, our Artists-in-Residence, Graciela Acedo, Milissa Payne Bradley, Jordan Drew, Arturo Fernandez, Claudia Anata Hubiak, and Chris Jacobsen,

are the best in the business. Gifted choreographers Gregory Dawson & Victor Talledos have graciously contributed their talents to our show this year. The Asawa SOTA Technical Theater Department and Direc-tor Paul Kwapy are the backbone of the school and no Asawa SOTA show could go on without them. Thank you to the Cowell Theater tech crew, led by Jeff Gregory.

I want to recognize Brion Charles, Debra Rose and the staff of SF Gyrotonic, who keep our students healthy and in shape; Richard and Sharonjean Leeds and Yvonne McClung who provide scholarships for selected outstanding seniors. Thank you to the staff of LINES Ballet Dance Center and ODC for providing the space for our classes and encouragement for our students’ choreographic endeavors.

Finally, I want to thank my family and friends, and my rock, Eric, who have supported me in my first year as the Dance Director of this amaz-ing program.

The heart and soul of this program is the students. We push them to be the strong students, adventurous artists, and most importantly, respon-sible and kind human beings. I met this graduating senior class when they were freshmen and I was an Artist-in-Residence at SOTA. It has been a pleasure to watch them grow over the past four years, and we will miss them. This Class of 2017 is a powerful group, and I could not be more proud of them. They will change the world.

–Andrea Hinman, Director Asawa SOTA Dance
