Ruth 2Boaz: The Kinsman-
Redeemer
As we get started…..
• Luke 24:27
• The Old Testament is about Jesus, just like the New Testament.
• Look for Jesus as the Kinsman-Redeemer.
Introduction from Ruth 1
• 1) Ruth is written during the Judges– “every man did that which was right in his own
eyes” (Judges 17:6)– God has to punish……then get judges
• 2) Elimelech takes family away to Moab– Escaping a famine (Ruth 1:1)
• 3) Naomi comes back to Bethlehem – No husband or sons……just a daughter-in-law– However, Ruth is a believer in God (Ruth 1:16)
Now What?
• Vs. 1: Naomi has a wealthy relative….Boaz– He was a “kinsman”
• Vs. 1: Boaz: “strength”• Vs. 2: Ruth not longing for Moab…even
though she is poor– (PA) Do we long for the world when times are
tough?• Vs. 2: Ruth wants to work hard in order to
provide– (PA) didn’t just pray and sit around
Now What?• Vs. 2: Jews were to leave grain for the poor in
the fields and not pick all of it (Lev. 19:9-10)• Vs. 2: God’s welfare is set up: the rich are
kind while allowing the poor their dignity– (PA) do we think of those less fortunate?
• Vs. 3: Ruth “happened” to go to Boaz’s field, Naomi’s relative– (PA) Proverbs 16:9 “A man’s heart deviseth his
way, but the Lord directeth his steps.”– (PA) John 5:17 “My Father is always at his work
to this day, and I too am working.”
Ruth Meets Boaz
• Vs. 4: Boaz has a good relationship with employees – (PA) Are we courteous and sincere?
• Vs. 5: Boaz asks about Ruth• Vs. 6-7: Foreman is embarrassed to tell him
that Ruth is from Moab
Ruth meets Boaz• Vs. 8: Boaz tells her not to go to another field,
that he would protect and provide– (PA) Boaz is a picture of Christ here– II Cor. 6:17: “Come out from among them and be
ye separate.”– I John 2:15 “Love not the world, neither the
things that are in the world.”– Ps. 18:2 “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress,
and my deliverer.”– Phil. 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need
according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Ruth Meets Boaz• Vs. 10: Ruth is humble, embarrassed,
surprised (her background)• Vs. 11: Boaz tells her about her reputation– Good to mother-in-law– Left home and its comforts/familiarity– Trusting in the God of Israel– (PA) Have we lived a life of consistency?– (PA) Have we left the world?– (PA) Are we trusting?
Ruth Meets Boaz• Vs. 13: Ruth is comforted • Vs. 14-17: Ruth is invited for lunch. • Vs. 14-17: Boaz instructs men to leave Ruth
more grain on purpose. (didn’t have to do this)• (PA) God goes beyond the expected norms!• (PA) Eph. 3:20 “Now unto Him who is able to do
exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.”
• (PA) Heb. 8:12 “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
A Kinsman-Redeemer
• Vs. 18: Ruth shares with Naomi• Vs. 19: Naomi asks where Ruth gleaned that
day• (PA) Great question for us. • (PA) John 4:35 “Lift up your eyes, and look on
the fields; for they are white already to harvest.”
• Vs. 19: Ruth tells her she was in Boaz’s field
A Kinsman Redeemer
• Vs. 20: Naomi is excited– 1) God hadn’t stopped loving her (see 1:20-21)– 2) Boaz is a relative….a close one….a potential
kinsman-redeemer– (PA) This is God’s guidance – Kinsman-redeemers are responsible for helping
family members
A Kinsman-Redeemer
• Either Naomi…– Owns the land but needs to sell– Doesn’t own the land but can buy the land back.
Since she can’t, another kin must do it for her.
A Kinsman-Redeemer
• Redemption: deliverance from bondage• Kinsman-Redeemer (Goel)• Lev. 25:25-28– Redemption of Property
• Lev. 25:47-49– Redemption of Family Member from slavery
• Num. 35:19-21– Redemption of Blood
A Kinsman Redeemer• Another OT Law– Deut. 25:5-10 raising up children for a dead
“brother” (wider definition?)– Naomi had no more sons to marry Ruth– Duty fell to the next closest kin– (PA) Jesus is our Kinsman-Redeemer who has
bought us (and will one day marry us)– (PA) Romans 6:18 “Being, then, made free from
sin, ye become the servants of righteousness.”– (PA) Eph. 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, even
as Christ also loved the church.”
