H.E. Maitha Al MahrouqiUndersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism of Oman and Chairwoman of Oman Sail
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Sultanate of Oman for the ninth edition of the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon. If you’re a visitor to the country for this event, I hope you enjoy your stay here and are able to experience the Sultanate’s unique offerings.
Born out of a vision to bring runners together in our beautiful country, the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon has developed year on year, becoming Oman’s most iconic sporting event and drawing participants from around the globe. Alongside the event’s AIMS certification, the recent selection of the marathon as an AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Ranking qualifier is further recognition of its inspiring progress.
Every year our community is captivated and inspired by the spectacle of the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon, with crowds lining the route to cheer on the runners, many of whom return on subsequent years as competitors and volunteers. The previous two editions of this event have set new records for participation and last year welcomed more than 8000 competitors from over 100 nations. This year promises to be even bigger and we hope that your determination and achievements can inspire many more runners to take their place on the start line in 2021.
I wish you great success in the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon and encourage visiting international runners to explore the mountains, sea, beaches and the deserts to experience Oman first-hand and see what makes this such a special and beautiful country.
It is my honour to introduce the 2020 Al Mouj Muscat Marathon, which will once again confirm Oman as a global sports and adventure tourism destination.
We are incredibly proud to have built on the vision and foundations of the race originally created by Muscat Road Runners. As we have worked to develop the profile of this international event, our focus has also been on increasing local participation. I am delighted that the nation has embraced running and the number of Omanis competing in the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon has increased year on year. The event has created new opportunities for people across the country to challenge themselves with new distances, become more confident in their abilities and aspire to improve on their achievements with each race. We received so much positive feedback last year and these stories of personal growth are mirrored across the country.
With the 2020 festival of running taking place over two days and involving a wide variety of local stakeholders, I am thankful for the support of our title sponsor Al Mouj Muscat, our many event partners and the fantastic volunteers who are all integral to the continued success of the event. At its heart, the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon is, and always has been, a community effort. I would like to thank the Ministry of Sports Affairs, the Ministry of Tourism, the Oman Athletic Association, Muscat Municipality and the Royal Oman Police for their ongoing direction and support.
I am sure that the 2020 Al Mouj Marathon will be an unforgettable experience for each runner and I wish you all every success.

Timing Chip
The timing chip is attached to the bib. Sports Timing is the Official Timing System for Al Mouj Muscat Marathon 2020. The Sports Timing system will be used for race management and timing solutions throughout the event. Split times will be taken and results will be posted on www.muscatmarathon.om following the race.
The bib should be attached to the front of the t-shirt (not the back).
Any person running without a bib will be removed from the course.
Use safety pins on all four corners of the bib to keep it in place, being careful not to insert a pin through the timing chip.
Do not use someone else’s number or let someone else use yours. This will result in disqualification.
Make sure your bib number is clearly visible to photographers on the course.

It is essential that you are in good health before your race starts.
Spend a minute to go through this checklist before you embark on the distance. If you are not feeling right, consider the challenge ahead very carefully and decide if you should really race.
Do you:
Feel lethargic?
Feel unwell?(Headache, sore throat, cough or runny nose)
Have the symptoms of heart problems?(Breathing difficulty, irregular heartbeats or chest pain)
Feel feverish?
Have signs of stomach ache, diarrhoea or nausea?
Feel rested enough?
Feel mentally prepared for the race?
How Fit Do You Feel?
Pre-Existing Medical Conditions If you have a pre-existing medical condition, please ensure that you login to your Njuko account prior to race day and update your details. Additionally, this information must be written on the reverse of your bib so it can be immediately accessed by our medical team, should you require assistance during the race. Conditions that MUST be reported, include:
Diabetes blood testing opportunity The Oman Diabetes Association is one of the beneficiary charities of the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon 2020. After their run, a blood testing opportunity will be provided to competitors running the full marathon and half marathon who have declared their condition. Race Day Morning
Try to drink lots of water in the 3 days before the race and cut down on tea and coffee (both of which tend to dehydrate).
Take an easy jog to loosen your legs and to prepare yourself mentally.
Avoid unusual foods. Stick to what you have been eating during training to avoid any stomach issues that can come with new or unfamiliar foods.
Ensure you collect your race pack before the race day. You will require your confirmation e-mail with QR code and a photo ID. Race pack collection is at Oman Sail Headquarters at Al Mouj, Muscat on February 19th and 20th 2020, from 12.00pm - 9.00pm each day.
1. Pace yourself to complete the race within your comfortable heart rate zone and at a speed that you can maintain all the way round.
2. Once you’re off, don’t spend the first km trying to weave your way through the crowd of runners in front of you. You use up a lot of energy unnecessarily. Go at the same pace as the others, using the first mile as a warm up. The course will thin out in time, and you’ll have plenty of time to get back on your target pace.
1. Wake up early and have your breakfast 2-3 hours prior to your scheduled start time. This is to ensure that your food is properly digested before the race.
2. Arrive at the race venue early to warm up with our fitness partners - see schedule on page 44. Do some final dynamic exercises to promote muscle stretch, whilst keeping blood flowing to the muscles. Some good examples include: Leg Swings, Side Swings, Butt Kicks and Knee Lifts.
3. Stay calm and visualise your race.
4. Visit the toilet in the race village before going to the start line.
5. Use petroleum jelly to prevent chafing in areas like inner thighs, under arms and even nipples.
6. Get to the correct start position according to your pace so that you will not block other runners.
Race Week Checklist
30
1. Never wear anything new on the day. Wear shoes and clothes that you are used to wearing and completely comfortable in.
2. Attach your bib! Please see pages 11-12.3. Put your name in large letters on the front of your vest: the crowds will be able to support you all the way.
4. Pack your Official Runner’s Bag the night before so you can double check it’s all there well in advance.
At The Finish Line
1. Celebrate your success and smile for your official marathon photo!
2. Go for an easy walk or jog to help loosen up your muscles.
3. Ideally you should consume a mix of carbohydrates and proteins within 30 minutes of completing your run.
Runners’ Check List
Your intensity
Your fuel
Your Hydration
There are three key things you need to be thinking about when you are running:
Start at a slower pace and aim to build your way into the run, ending with a strong finish. The tendency in longer runs is to start too fast and pay for it later in the race, so exercise control and work your way into the challenge. Start the run at a pace that you could maintain throughout the entire distance.
Ensure you are consistently taking in your calories to replace what you are burning. Depending on weight, experience etc. you should look to be consuming gel every 30-45min or so. GU Energy gels will be available at resfreshment points on the route. You may bring your own gels to use while running, if this is your preference..
By the time you feel thirsty, it is TOO LATE. Drink before you get thirsty. Sip regularly on water or electrolyte drinks throughout the run. Never take electrolyte drinks and gels at the same time. When the going gets tough, focus on what you can control. Think about your technique and your breathing.
32
Refreshment points Feeding and water stations will operate alongside the course and offer easy access to runners. Food & beverages on offer will be: water, Cola, gels, bananas, oranges, dates, salt biscuits. At each refreshment point, toilets (for both males and females) will be available.
In an effort to reduce the environmental impact of the 2020 event, single-use plastic bottles will be replaced with paper cups at refreshment points.

The Race
Race Pacers
Pacing assistance will be offered to runners competing in the marathon, half marathon and 10KM races to obtain their personal best times. This is achieved by providing a pacing ‘bus’ to a number of target times. All runners are welcome to compete alongside experienced pacers from Muscat Road Runners, who will guide them to completing their races in accordance with the official finish time marked on their flags.
Pacers will run 20 to 50 seconds slower during the first half of their races and then slightly faster in the second half, to enable them to ‘pull’ runners on board their ‘bus’ for the final couple of kilometres.
Join a race day pacer to help you achieve your target time!

Finish Zone Pick Up Area
Toilets
Feeding and water stations will operate at the finish. Food & Beverages on offer will be: water, bananas, oranges, dates and salt biscuits.
Remember that only still water is advisable to drink before the start of the Kids’ run and it’s important to make sure that competitors consume enough so they don’t get thirsty or dehydrated during the race.
Kids’ Run competitors can be collected from the finish zone pick up area which will be a closed space guarded by security personnel. At Race Pack Collection, the responsible parent or guardian of the runner will be given a wristband that matches the runner’s bib. The parent or guardian must have this wristband with them in order to collect their child at the finish line. Only one adult per child may enter this collection area.
Schools are advised to have teachers assigned to specific groups of students in ratios that they are comfortably able to manage, to ensure that this process operates smoothly. These teachers must have the wristbands to identify the children in their group.
There are plenty of toilets for both girls and boys behind the stage at the Race Village.
Spectators
Children cannot be accompanied during the race. Parents, teachers, coaches and spectators must remain behind barriers around the start/finish area in order to ensure the safety of all participants.

We’re working to influence environmentally sustainable behaviour through education, awareness and conservation.
The marathon’s environmental pledge is started in 2019, by replacing single use plastic bottles with paper cups at each refreshment post. The 2020 edition of the event sees the return of this initiative and we will also be introducing sustainable bamboo cotton runners’ t shirts and bags as we reaffirm our commitment to going green. Hydration for the 2020 edition of the event will be provided by Oman Oasis Water.
Reducing our ecological footprint
Runners are asked to respect the environment and to have a considerate attitude before, during and after the event. In particular, waste must be disposed in the bins provided.
Cleanliness
As an Official Supporter, Be’ah will help the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon with its waste management and treatment.
