SEEDS OF HOPE PLANS: WHERE WE ARE NOW WITH THE DESIGN The hearty green dot participation at the Growing in Gratitude Barbeque was a good sign of things to come – advent of good tidings for the hungry in our community. The leader team (myself, Chuck Knight and Sheila Lowerre) sat down with all of the boards and made a summary of the responses (an abbreviated summary follows below). We also discussed all of our impressions, looked at the boards, and made a preliminary guess at the general priorities. After sending a written summary to the Rios team, Chuck, Sheila and I then met with Mark, Sam, and Abby over a conference call, discussed key points, and decided on next steps. They will work on finalizing a design for the campus, keeping in mind the “phase in” approach. We will touch base with them throughout Nov/Dec. In December they will have a reasonably complete plan including costs for construction. They have met with our agricultural consultant, Jonathan Davis to incorporate his expertise on specific high nutrient foods and harvest schedules. We anticipate at the Annual Meeting (January 26) for our next big step forward. The design and phases should be ready, and with the Vestry’s endorsement in December, I’d like to get some of the fundraising scoped out by then – especially the grants. Grants and funds for construction Jonathan Davis has been invaluable to us in advising and identifying grants and corporate funding. He is very optimistic about our possibilities. Again, because we are doing this 100% for the food banks in our community, the support is entirely possible. Funny how that works isn’t it? Give to get. Obviously we need more details of the plan to know what the costs are, thus can’t work on the grants exactly until the plan is ready. But we can work on the narratives for the grants now. There’s always the background story, mission, etc. to draft. Right now if a couple good writers would raise their hands, we need you. What better way to spend your Christmas time! If you have friends that wouldn’t come to church, but they would help with this project, let me know. This will be a marvelous community endeavor. Our goal is to have initial research done, overtures on a few grants, rolling by January. I’d like a core team of 3 people for this fundraising with a point person to manage the grant writing. This person would keep track of the grants/ companies we’re approaching and provide the grant writers with technical data they need to write. Easy. We can do this. After we see the final plans there will no doubt be opportunities for people

to sponsor certain aspects of the garden and grounds. Stay tuned in January for more information.Green dot summary from the presentation boards 10/12. We liked:

Wood edged or wicker-edged raised garden beds.Grassy path between garden plots or orchard.Orchards and lots of shade trees!Shade trees and seating in all places were very popular.Outdoor gathering places.Low shrubbery buffer for the privacy and filter air and sound from road.More pervious places such as making the parking lot with grass and tiles received the most dots

of everything!A large labyrinth in back parking lot with grass and tiles, big enough for a wheelchair.Maybe something in the center of labyrinth that can be changed out (cross, table, statue).Taking stained glass feel into signage by colored lights making the sign wooden and elegant.A sign that connects our character and sanctuary heart.Archways at entrances — arching vines in particular.Attractive fronts to the buildings with arches giving a cloister feel.Pathways are a hit.Water features especially water leading to something or to some place.Lots of energy for multipurpose and playful landscape (outdoor yoga, quiet centers, eating centers).Accessibility is important.Initial priorities, based on energy from responses:

Front garden beds and orchard with sign and green buffer plantingPervious back parking lot, labyrinth and food growing there tooLots of shade and seating for a welcoming entrance in frontCelebration Garden —outdoor gathering space off front of churchPlay area for the children and a family kitchen area

Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and conversation around Seeds of Hope. It’s advent, it’strue, Christ is coming.

IS IT A SECRET?No, it isn’t a secret,

but scant publicity has keptit below our “radar” sinceits inception in 1983. We are, of course, referringto Saint Andrew’s Endowment Fund. The mainprinciple that underlies the Endowment Fund is thatit empowers our ministry and is not used primarilyas a savings account to protect us against futureuncertainties. The Vestry long ago decided to investthe original bequest in a fund to provide income tothe Parish while maintaining the real value of theprincipal. The Vestry may use only the dividendsand interest generated by the Fund, but none of theprincipal. Since its inception, for every $1.00donated to the Fund, the Parish has received $2.25in income to be used by the Vestry as it sees fit, andthe principal has grown to $3.75 (more than keepingpace with inflation). Each dollar invested in the Fundhas grown to six dollars in value for Saint Andrew’sChurch. Stay “tuned” for more details on this VITALfinancial aspect of our parish life at Saint Andrew’s.

HEALING PRAYERDURING ADVENTAND EPIPHANYBeginning December 1

As we enter into the season ofAdvent we do so remembering that this time oftransition leads us to Christmas, the birth of Jesus, and the Light of God manifesting in a way thatchanges all of creation. Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the ChapelAfter discussion, our Tuesday evening

compline group has decided to begin praying EveningPrayer. Evening Prayer is usually prayed in the earlyevening and since we meet at 6:30 p.m., it wasagreed that it was the more appropriate prayer forthe time we meet. Evening Prayer is a beautifulexperience and we welcome everyone to join.

We have also chosen to not to chant EveningPrayer, but rather pray it in the manner we do ourregular Sunday liturgy. Although chanting can bea beautiful form of prayer, some find chantingsimilar to singing and feel reticent about joining in. We wish to be as inclusive as possible. We continue to meet in the chapel at 6:30p.m. and encourage everyone to come and discoverthe richness of our prayer together.

ST. ANDREW'S PARISH VISION

We are a praying parish where all are welcome. We are Christians of every type, old andyoung, married and single, gay and straight, different nationalities and cultures, native-born andforeign-born, conservative and liberal, sinners and saints. We are bound together by God’s lovefor us and our love for God and one another.

St. Andrew’s strives to foster a welcoming, inclusive, and loving community in which we:1) follow Jesus Christ in Spirit and Truth; 2) worship God; 3) educate our children, inquirers, andourselves in Christian faith and life; 4) serve the needs and hungers of the world in fulfillment ofthe two great commandments to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and to love ourneighbor as ourselves.

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN

Saint Andrew’s is a Child Protective Parish in which God’s protection and our diligenceenable our children to have a safe and enriching experience. We have established policies andprocedures recommended by the national and diocesan offices of the Episcopal Church toprotect the children in our care. We screen volunteer and paid staff and provide regular safe-environment training.

A copy of these policies and procedures is available upon request to the Parish Office.
