As planets and stars circle the sun, the dervishes turncounterclockwise, both around themselves and around the halka(circle). They turn first with crossed arms; then, taking flight, they opentheir arms, holding the right hand up and the left hand down,becoming transparent vessels for bringing divine blessings to earth

One of the beauties of thisseven-centuries-old ritual isthe way that it unifies thethree fundamentalcomponents of humansnature;

mind, emotion, &spirit,

combining them in a practiceand a worship that seeks thepurification of all three in theturning towards Divine Unity.

But most significantly, theenrichment of this earth andthe well-being of humanityas a whole.

The dervishes, seekers ofg od, turn no t to g o into atrance or reach anecstatic high, but to

express a central messageabout spiritu ality. Th edance like movementputs body, mind and spirittogether in an expressionoflovefor the divine.


The Dervishes

Contrary to popular belief, thesemazen's goal is not to lose

consciousness or to fall into astate of ecstasy. Instead, byrevolving in harmony with allthings in nature -- with the

smallest cells and with the starsin the firmament -- thesemazen testifies to theexistence and the majesty of

the Creator, thinks of Him, givesthanks to Him, and prays toHim. In so doing, the semazen

confirms the words of theQur'an (64:1): Whatever is in theskies or on earth invokes God.
