On October 25, 2016, Xplore Technologies introducedthe XSLATE R12, a powerful, versatile 12.5-inchrugged tablet for professionals who split their timebetween office and field. The R12 was initiallylaunched in 2014 by Motion Computing, which isnow part of Xplore. For a while, the tablet was calledMotion R12 by Xplore. Now it’s a full-fledged memberof Xplore’s XSLATE line of rugged tablets. But this isfar more than just a name change. Xplore sent theR12 to boot camp and it came back stronger, fasterand more powerful. Much more powerful.
Let’s start by describing what the XSLATE R12 is, andwhat Xplore has done to make it better. The purposeof the R12 was to suit the needs of mobile profession-als who wanted more screen real estate, more dura-bility, more versatility, and more performance than iscommonly available in consumer tablets. So the R12has a large 12.5-inch display with full 1920 x 1080 1080presolution. It measures 12.9 x 8.1 inches, is 0.65 inch-es thick, and weighs just under three pounds. It’s amaz-ing how much roomier the screen feels than that of astandard 10-inch consumer tablet. There’s ample spaceto work on this tablet and then some. What Xplorehas done now is give the R12 more punch and an edge.
That wasn’t easy as the original R12 already was amodern, convincing design. But now it’s that muchbetter yet. The high-end chip option is a brand-spank-ing new Intel “Kaby Lake” 7th generation Core proces-sor with plenty of punch. RAM memory is now of thenew DDR4 variety, which is faster and uses less pow-er. Solid state drives are now available with up to halfa terabyte of capacity. Wired connectivity now includes— in addition to a full-size USB 3.0 port, HDMI, au-dio, and docking — an expansion input port as wellas Ethernet and true serial via an adapter cable.
Expansion card slots (microSD and SIM) have beenrelocated from outside into the battery compartment, where they are better protected, but remain easily ac-cessible. There’s now an access door for quick SSD re-moval should that be required for security reasons. Se-curity was also the impetus for adding SmartCard/Common Access Card functionality. And the R12 isnow Class 1 Division 2 rated for intrinsic safety.
The capacitive multi-touch display is brighter (800nits) for better outdoor viewability, while retaining itsactive digitizer with a pen that doesn’t need a battery.
Wireless communication is faster with Intel DualBand Wireless-AC 8260 WiFi with Bluetooth 4.2. Op-tionally available are Sierra Wireless 4G LTE mobilebroadband modules with GNSS (a combo that can useGPS, Russian GLONASS, European Galileo and theChinese Beidou) or a dedicated GPS module. CAT 6carrier aggregation allows these new WWAN modules
reach peak throughput speeds of 300 Mbps downloadand 50 Mbps upload. This future-proofs the R12 andenables seamless cloud-based services operation.
There’s now wake-on-power for vehicular use, andthe new R12 is pass-through antenna ready, with itsmobile dock having the option of a pass-through mod-ule that supports WWAN, WLAN and GPS. And thereare two cameras, with 2.0 megapixel resolution in thefront and 8.0 megapixel in the rear.
The R12 being a productivity tool for professionalsin various fields, Xplore offers numerous extras and
accessories that extend the tablet’s features and abil-ities. An example are the optional “SlateMate” bolt-on modules for barcode scanning and BCS/HF RFID.
As for performance commensurate with profes-sional-grade use, that’s now provided by Intel 6th and7th generation processors. But more on that later.
Taking a closer look at the XSLATE R12Unlike newcomers to the tablet market, Xplore has afull two decades’ worth of experience in rugged tablets.By concentrating on tablets only, Xplore managed tosucceed where most early tablet makers failed. Andby strictly concentrating on rugged tablets for theirchosen markets, Xplore learned to meet the needs ofcustomers with specialized accessories, extensions, and solutions. They know what works in those fields.
As for Motion, the company had always subscribedto a form-follows-function with understated elegancephilosophy rather than simply following the latest fash-ion trends. That was evident in Motion’s early adop-tion of Intel’s MCA (Mobile Clinical Assistant) withits handle and integrated peripherals, a platform thatlives to this day in Xplore’s Motion C5M and F5M. BothXplore and Motion have been an early adopter of tech-nologies that make field professionals’ work easier andmore productive. Examples are superior displays, highquality sound capture, dual mode input, and capaci-tive multi-touch when almost no one else had it.
So it’s no surprise that the XSLATE R12 is differentboth visibly and under the hood. Below is a look at theR12 tablet from the front and from all four sides. Notehow the R12 is slender for a rugged tablet, and alsohow all I/O is neatly integrated into the design.
What makes the XSLATE R12 instantly recogniz-able is its unique shape. Where virtually every othertablet is a rectangle with rounded corners, the R12 isan elongated octagon, a rectangle with chamfered cor-ners clipped at a shallow angle. That makes the R12memorable, and the sloped edges make it easy to pickup the tablet from a flat surface.
The image to the left shows the right side of the XS-LATE R12 tablet with the protective rubber, hingedcovers open. The door design is one of the subtle im-provements in this latest R12. It is now sturdier andrelies on simple, and easily replaceable, rubber stripsthat press on all ports and seal them off.
