MADRID BARBARIANS R.F.C. NEWSLETTER NUMBER 1. JANUARY 2013

Page 2: Rucking all over the world

Welcome to the first Edition of Rucking all over the world, the Madrid Barbarians RFC monthly Newsletter. The idea of this issue is to have a quick review of the matches and events of the past month and to keep you informed of what’s ahead. We’ve also created some regular pages with interviews of Spanish, expats and former players, and a page with our merchandising items and special offers where we’re sure you’ll find something to purchase..

This is your publication and we all want it to be interesting, useful and amusing, so please let us know your suggestions to improve it. All sort of collaborations are welcome, if you find any contents that you may think that are interesting to share, please let us know ([email protected]).

So now it’s time to have a quick review of this season.

New Season, new divisonPromotion to the 2nd division was the best way to finish last season and to start a new one, but it hasn’t been an easy start as many regular players had to say goodbye and couldn’t continue with us this year: Gus, Jas, Tuna, Bimbo, Adam, Paco, Will, Sam, Lote, Al, Chris Strong, Mig, Junior, Danny, Max, Leandro… too many great players, and a President, Miyagi, who also moved back to UK. We were struggling in some vital positions and it seemed quite complicated to have a competitive squad in all the areas to start playing against high level teams in the new league, but this is the spirit of the Madrid Baabaas, people going and people coming, so new faces started to show up to fill the gaps that others left, and in a short period of time we had again a strong team ready to play. New faces like Jules, Cristhian, Ian, Dylan, Marin, Toby (returning home) or Javier for the first team, and even new players for the glorious seconds like David, Jesús, Hugo, James, Carlos,…

Leon Bown took over the team coaching bringing a good injection of team spirit and competitiveness, helped by Brian with the backs. Sergio as new captain.

Game planThe first half of the season proved that the team is developing in the right direction as we are getting stronger every day and that our game plan is becoming our natural way of playing. Two remarkable victories against two strong teams Tasman Boadilla and Complutense Cisneros have given us a solid position in the middle of the table. We had no problems against the weakests teams (Toledo and Nebrija), and we put in a great performance against the strongest squads, Veterinaria, CAU and Olimpico where we only lost against ourselves. Probably our only loss out of schedule was againts San Isidro where we were lacking some regular forwards through injuries, and they knew how to take advantage of it.

2013Two consecutive victories is our performance up to date in the new year. 73-12 against Nebrija and a great 19-22 against Industriales after a very competitive match where we took sweet revenge from the 8-31 of the first round. We now know that we can beat any team in this league, and that we only depend on ourselves.

The team has also experienced some changes as Jules and Marin left in December, Chris Talbot has just gone back to London and Guy Thistlethwaite our executive Chairman has also packed his suitcases and gone back home. Dominic Lombard has changed his player status to coach, and some new players like Olly or Adrian joined in and we were glad to see Paco’s return. Some others are about to start next month, like Jack and Nick.

The team is very confident and willing to show their best in the next tough matches. This can only get better!

This can only get better!
