11-12 1 Blackboard About Rubrics The Blackboard Rubric tool allows the instructor to list evaluation criteria for an assignment and apply the rubric to a gradable item such as a Blog, Journal, Assignment, and Discussion Board to name a few. Instructors can decide if and when they would like students to view the rubric. Instructors can enter grading information and feedback directly into the rubric. Rubrics help students better understand the requirements of an assignment. Instructors can use this tool to better explain their assignments to students and is used in conjunction with the Grade Center. From the Grade Center, a rubric can be associated to any column. Rubrics can be viewed from the Grade Center during the grading process. Rubrics can be created prior to creating a gradable item or can be created and applied when creating the object within Blackboard (Ex: Blog, Journal, Assignment, Discussion Board) To Create a Rubric: 1) Click Course Tools in the Control Panel 2) Click Rubrics 3) Click Create Rubric 4) Type a name for the rubric 5) Enter a description (optional) Rubric Detail Rubrics are made up of rows and columns. The rows correspond to the criteria of an assignment. The columns correspond to the level of achievement expressed for each criterion. A description and point value for each cell in the rubric defines the evaluation and score of an assignment. To Create a Rubric Grid: 1) Click Add Row to add a new criterion at the bottom of the grid 2) Click Add Column to add a new level of achievement to the grid 3) Select a Rubric Type 4) Click the arrow next to the Levels of Achievement (Novice, Competent, and Proficient) and click Edit to rename. Do the same to rename the Criteria. 5) Enter a value for each cell 6) Enter a description defining the criteria and the associated Level of Achievement 7) Click Submit

Blackboard About Rubrics

Note: There is a 1000 character limit for each cell. Rows and columns can also be reordered by clicking on the Levels of Achievement or Criteria buttons.

You can apply the rubric to a gradable item when creating the object or when editing a gradable item as displayed below:

To Copy a Rubric:

1) Click the arrow to the right of the Rubric 2) Click Copy

3) Rename the rubric by clicking on the arrow and selecting Edit Associating a Rubric to a Gradable Item Gradable items include assignments, essays, short answer, and file response test questions, blogs and journals, wikis and discussion board threads and forums.

1) Create a gradable item 2) Under the Grading options, click Add Rubric and then click on Select Rubric

You can also create a new rubric here as well. Note: If Add Rubric is not available, make sure you clicked the option to grade the item in order to make Add Rubric an option.

To Apply a Rubric to a Column in the Grade Center: 1) Click the arrow to the right of the column heading in the Grade Center 2) Click Edit Column Information 3) Click Add Rubric under Step 1 4) Choose either Select Rubric, Create New Rubric or Create from Existing
