Certified Remodeler (CR)Designed to recognize and identify full-service remodelers. Candidates musthave a minimum of five years experi-ence and be employed by or own afirm that derives 90 percent of its salesvolume from remodeling.

Certified Remodeler Associate (CRA)Recognizes individuals who activelysupport the remodeling industry, suchas architects, designers, educators,manufacturers, publishers, suppliersand consultants.

Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS)Reserved for remodelers who specializein a particular area of the industry, suchas roofing or flooring, etc.

Master Certified Remodeler (MCR)This designation recognizes CertifiedRemodelers that have demonstratedcommitment to the remodeling industrythrough support of their local chapter,NARI National, and/or their local com-munity. The MCR identifies CertifiedRemodelers that have withstood the testof time and continue to be successfulwithin the industry. Candidates mustcomplete and submit this application forconsideration by the NARI CertificationBoard. In addition to completing andsubmitting an application to qualify forthe MCR certification, candidates mustbe a Certified Remodeler for a minimumof 10 consecutive years and holdanother NARI certification. Candidatesmust have been involved with their localNARI chapter or NARI National and/orinvolvement as a leader in the localcommunity. Candidates must submit aletter of recommendation from theirchapter executive or chapter presidentor three letters of recommendation fromrecent clients.

Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR)This designation includes remodelerswith knowledge and skills in a broadrange of universal design and remodel-ing. Individuals with the UDCR designa-tion are recognized as experiencedremodelers with skills and knowledge inall aspects of universal design andremodeling. Candidates must completeand submit this application for consider-ation by the NARI Certification Board. Inaddition to completing and submitting anapplication, to qualify for the UDCR cer-tification exam, candidates must havebeen in the remodeling industry for a min-imum of 5 years. Candidates must alsohave completed a minimum of 8 hours ofuniversal design remodeling/buildingrelated education.

Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC)Designed for lead carpenters who areskilled and knowledgeable in the tech-nical, hands-on aspects of their work,but also have demonstrated skill andknowledge in project management,supervision and customer service.Candidates must have a minimum fiveyears experience with at least two ofthose years as a lead carpenter.Companies who believe in providing aquality product will make sure their leadcarpenters are trained and certified sothey can produce better jobs, be moreprofessional, run projects more efficient-ly, and interact more proactively withtheir customers.

Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler (CKBR)This designation allows homeownersto identify contractors who do exten-sive work in kitchen and bath remod-eling, and have gone the extra mile to improve themselves and their firm’s capabilities in these areas. TheCKBR certification addresses theunique aspects of kitchen & bathdesign and remodeling, includingtechnical expertise and new productknowledge.

Green Certified Professional (GCP)The GCP designation is designed torecognize and identify remodelerswho apply green or sustainable prin-ciples to their remodeling projects.They understand key green buildingconcepts including energy efficiency,site management and use, indoor airquality, water conservation and theuse of building materials and finishes.The GCP certification addresses howgreen remodeling can make homesmore durable, efficient, sustainable,healthier to live in and less expensiveto operate.

The economic conditions of the past few years havethrown a monkey wrench into plans and dreams for somany homeowners. Unfortunately many of us have had

to adjust our goals and re-plan our futures.With the real estate market in an unknown state, people are

really nervous about selling their houses to buy newer, biggerhomes. Many of us are making due with what we have and are“waiting out” the economy. However, many more of us aredoing remodeling projects to upgrade our current homes untilthings get better.

If you have not already done so, it may be time to re-focusand possibly re-plan. Fortunately, there are options that mayactually be better than our original plans.

ADDITIONS OR EXTENSIONSFor those who need more space and thought the answer was tosell and buy a larger home, perhaps the solution to the spacecrunch is an addition or extension. This solution also works wellfor accommodating merging families. Just as there are manyconsiderations in the decision to relocate or remodel, there aremany factors to consider in choosing to remodel your home inorder to accommodate grown children or aging parents.

FACTORS TO CONSIDERPerhaps the biggest issue in opting for extended family living isthat of privacy. With the proper remodel, good communicationand firm agreements, this option can have many significantfinancial advantages. Although the costs of running a larger

household will be more than those of a single family unit, thecosts will be less than those of two separate households.

AGING IN PLACEPerhaps you want to downsize or prepare for a scaled-backlifestyle or retirement of sorts. In that case you may want to pre-pare your home for the next phase of your life. LOCATIONAs you contemplate the advantages and disadvantages of mov-ing vs. remodeling, there are definite location factors to consid-er. These factors will depend on a number of things includingyour age and the age of your children, proximity to activitiesthat you and your family enjoy, and the neighborhood itself. Ifyou have children in school, you may want to avoid disruptingthem. This is a strong incentive for remodeling instead of mov-ing. There may be other advantages to staying in your currenthome. These could range from the actual block you live on, thetranquility or busyness of the area, the proximity to transporta-

In making a deci-sion, it is usually best to write down all the pluses and minusesto your current location and have your family do the same. Youmay find that there are significant advantages to staying in yourcurrent home. In that case, remodeling will be a better choicefor you and your family.

ADDING VALUEAssuming you decide to remodel instead of moving, keep inmind that a well-done renovation will add value to your home,so when the time does come to sell, your home will be worthsignificantly more.

If a careful analysis of your living situation indicates that it istime to sell, I urge you to find a home stager to assist in theprocess. A good home stager will give you an honest assessmentof your home, coordinate any needed repairs, assist with the re-arrangement of furniture and will help in the decoration ofyour home for a fast sale at the best possible price.

No matter how analytical our society becomes there is anemotional aspect that will never be eliminated from thepurchase of a home. This project consisted of a complete

interior and exterior remodel of a ranch

home, including a second floor addition.

The addition had an enormous impact on the look

and functional space in the home. The completed

home features functional enhancements such as:

two staircases, washer and dryer on both floors,

central vacuum, master bedroom suite with four

walk-in closets, gym, and private outdoor terrace

accessible from three rooms overlooking the

Great South Bay. Aesthetic elements include

granite kitchen countertops and dark cherry

wood cabinets, full onyx mosaic-tiled bathroom

with double-sinks, and a double-sided natural gas

fireplace with mounted televisions on both sides.

The exterior was improved with new siding, tur-

rets, heated pool, re-faced bulkhead, landscaping,

and a three car garage.

For this project, the homeowner wanted more

storage space for a kosher kitchen and multiple

work areas for several cooks. They wanted it to

be a safe area for children and for it to have a large eating

area for a big family.

The completed beautiful kitchen now includes two

large roll-out spice rack cabinets, four lazy Susans, a

dedicated area for a beverage and snack center, and

even a unique specialized area for the family pet. Large

custom cabinets with rollouts provide a separate area

for meats and dairy utensils, pots, pans, and dishes.

There also are work areas for both the induction cooktop

and the gas cooktop. A large island with seating for five

completes the space.

This homeowner wanted to enlarge the size

of the house and wished to keep all of the

bedrooms, excluding the spare bedroom,

on the first floor. Energy efficiency was a huge

priority with installing a high-efficiency boiler and

also includes radiant heat. They also wanted the

convenience of a first-floor laundry room.

The needs were met with a new attached garage,

which allows entry to the home in inclement

weather. The new open floor plan flows perfectly

with the new design. The beautiful kitchen has

more than enough workspace and the new first-

floor laundry room allows the homeowner to

multitask. The new powder room provides privacy,

and the Jack & Jill children’s bathroom allows

entry from either bedroom.

This homeowner wanted to remodel their existing1954-built, Cape home. The young couple wasabout to get married and wished to redo their home

before they moved in and started a family. The originalhouse wasn't large enough for them but had some nice features to it as far as layout. They had concerns aboutmaking the new first floor wide open for entertaining bothof their large families. They wanted the first floor to becomfortable for gatherings and also practical for theireveryday living. They wanted to keep the original footprintof the home without any extensions.

We drew up plans that included a new open floor planon the first level with a kitchen, powder room, living room,and dining room with all of the rooms open to each other.The new ceilings would be nine feet high. The new secondfloor includes all of the bedrooms with master suite,private bathroom, walk-in closet, 2 bedrooms, and a hallbathroom. The front foyer was to be a center hall coloniallook with grand ceilings all of the way up to the roof.

Upon completion, the house is perfect for entertainingand has spare rooms for the new family. After a fewmonths, the homeowners say that they love everythingespecially their new first floor layout and master suite.Their old style cape just became their new home.

In an attempt to restore her childhood home, this homeowner and her husband proposed a renovationwhich would incorporate modern amenities into a

life-sized keepsake of childhood memories. The new housewould ideally include certain mementos from the past as wellas enough space to house a design studio for the owner/artist.

The three bedroom ranch was expanded to include a completesecond story, a small front addition with a porch, rear additionsoff the garage and 3 foot rear additions for the bedrooms, as wellas a sunroom. Above the garage a full artist’s studio was put inplace allowing the homeowner to createfrom home. Woodplanking was carefully salvaged before the remodel, and reusedin the finished design. Single boards were meticulously removedand then transplanted into the finished project, both throughoutthe house as accents and as part of a fully paneled bathroom.

Midway through the project, the client’s husband lost his job,so careful financial planning became top priority without sacri-ficing the integrity of the project. Through careful budgetingand strategic planning, the builder and homeowners reachedthe desired result despite the unexpected circumstances. In theend the clients’ new home is both a testament to the past and abeautiful space which will satisfy for many years to come.

The homeowners’ desired a new kitchen. The woman of thehouse was confined to a wheelchair and the present kitchencertainly did not accommodate her abilities. She found it very

difficult to perform any tasks, except for ones that could be done atthe kitchen table. Removing any items from the refrigerator with topmounted freezer was a challenge and retrieving anything from theoven was hazardous. She no longer enjoyed any cooking activities.

Having a lower work area that could accommodate a wheelchairwas her primary need. Being able to work at the sink and cook topwere never previously considered by them. After consultations withboth of the homeowners, a new kitchen was custom built to accom-modate her needs

The homeowners selected the cherry cabinets for their depth andrichness of color. The natural red oak flooring offered a pleasantcontrast, and accentuated the cabinets. The granite chosen had anarray of earth tones that contained many shades of colors; rangingfrom beiges to browns to reds and black. A mixture of these colorswas also used for the back splash tile. A tile pattern that featured anexpanded funnel was formed to mimic the hood. The variation inthe heights and depths of the cabinets and counters created adynamic visual interest that the homeowners love. They both nowenjoy preparing meals.

Our client desperately needed a screened-inporch because during the warmer weather,he could not sit outside without being

eaten alive. We solved his problem by building abeautiful Ipe (Brazilian Hardwood) deck but with a section to get away from the insects and to protect him from the rain. A nice feature of this is the fact that they can go up on the second level(not at dusk) and take advantage of the excellentview they have of the golf course and small lake.

PVC trim was used for all the fascia work somaintenance would be at a minimum for them.We used hidden drains behind the fascia and drainpipes ran through the columns to improve the aesthetics. We used about 12 helical piles tokeep the deck from settling as this was built nearthe water. In this project it is what you don't seethat became very important. The homeowners were so happy with the project that they invited the whole crew over for a BBQ on their new deck!

After an electrical fire destroyedtheir previous home, Joanneand Ed Nusdlatt found the per-

fect replacement looking out on a golfcourse and the New York harbor chan-nel. At roughly 5,000 square feet, withfour bedrooms, and four full baths, itwas almost perfect…almost. It did nothave anywhere to take advantage of theoutdoors and the home’s great views.

“Our previous home had a screened-in porch that we liked very much,” saysEd. “We also wanted to add a deck offthe home’s master bedroom upstairs totake advantage of the unbelievableviews.”

Ed worked with his architect, ArleneGilbert, to turn his ideas into a two-story deck and porch. The first level fea-tures a deck off the kitchen and livingroom with a built-in barbeque for enter-taining. It flows into a screened-inporch off one end of the house. Abovethe screened-in porch is a second-storydeck with additional seating and moregreat views.

CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES“The homeowners really needed thescreened-in porch so they could sit out-side during dusk in warmer weather andnot be bothered by insects,” says Kent

Buell, MCR, CKBR, of Kentstructionin Medford. “The two-story structurealso provides protection from any rain.”

Importantly, the project enhances thehome’s existing aesthetics. The addedstructure keeps with the home’s squarelines, as well as matching the white trimaround all of its windows and doors. TheKentstruction team made sure the sup-port columns would not block the home’slarge sliding doors. They achieved thesespans using micro-lam beams.

Special attention was paid to makesure the stonework around the barbequeblends aesthetically with the home andthe landscaping. The deck itself is con-structed of beautiful Ipe (Brazilianhardwood) which was stained a rich,dark color to contrast with the whitePVC trim.

The entire deck perimeter, screen-inporch, and all columns are trimmed inAzek PVC trim and all balusters for therailing were individually installed. Byusing PVC trim for all the fascia work,homeowner maintenance is kept at aminimum.

“We used hidden fasteners for the Ipedecking and handmade the decorativerailing panels,” says Buell. “Keepingthe symmetry and balance of the railingwas a painstaking process.”

Kentstruction used an innovativemethod to overcome the drainage forthe second-floor deck. “You cannot seeit, but there are gutters and leadersdraining the second-floor deck,” says

Buell. “We decided to hide the guttersby recessing a channel behind the fas-cia. This channel got pitched and theroofing went right into it. We hid theleader pipes inside the square columns.The upper deck boards cover the gut-ters. So, in this case, it is what you don’tsee that became important,” he says.

Another challenge of this project wasthat all 12 supports had to have helicalcolumns sunk into the ground toapproximately 20 feet before the cementfootings were poured. Because thehouse sits along the water, this processassures the deck won’t settle over time.

SELECTING A CONTRACTORThe Nusdlatts had three contractors bidon their project and felt most comfort-able with Kent Buell and his firm. “Agood friend of mine in the neighbor-hood used them for a fairly extensiveproject in his own home and recom-mended them,” Ed says. “He was hon-est and true to his word.”

In fact, Joanne and Ed were so happywith the project that they invited thewhole building crew over for a barbequeon their new deck.

Everybody wants a great home. Weremodel our homes to improveour kitchens, our bathrooms, our

living spaces, and our quality of life. Wespend a significant amount of energyplanning and selecting just the rightmaterials or design elements for ourhomes. Many of us have families whomwe care about deeply and we work hardto provide for them and keep themhappy, healthy, and safe.

When most of us were in school weworked hard to get good grades. It was-n't always easy, but bringing home areport card with straight D's was notrewarded. And with good reason. Barelypassing, below average, was hardly anaccomplishment, and definitely notsomething to be proud of. In some areas,our building codes are designed to bejust good enough to keep us from gettinghurt. They are essentially the equivalentof a "D." However, in some cases, build-ing codes, while still the minimum stan-dard, may be a bit better, but it dependswhere you live.

When we talk about what a great homeis, we should be talking about somethingthat is a better than a "D." This is wheregreen remodeling comes into the picture.Green remodeling and building are allabout going well beyond the bare mini-mum to create something of quality thatis healthy and safe for you and does lessdamage to our environment and our com-munity. Green remodeling is really aboutmaking great spaces for your family whilebeing responsible. However, keep in mindthat different people view green in differ-ent ways. Not all green buildingapproaches are also healthier and allhealthier building practices are not green.

We all know that Green remodeling isthe right thing to do, and it’s probably safeto say that there aren’t any builders orremodelers who do not want to buildgreen. So why isn’t everyone remodelinggreen? It is a bit of a catch 22. The problemis that construction professionals don’tthink that homeowners want green, andmost homeowners think construction pro-fessionals don’t want to or know how to

build green. And both parties think it costsmore. Well let’s set this story straight.

MYTH #1Homeowners are not interested in Green.This is obviously not true. Organic foodsales are through the roof. Target is sell-ing bamboo shirts (which incidentally arenot very green), and Ford is producingefficient hybrid vehicles. In a less thanstellar economy, the growth in the sus-tainable and green market continues tobe steady. Why? Because when we havethe opportunity to have healthier, happi-er lives, we choose it. What you, as ahomeowner, need to do is let yourremodeler or designer know that youwant something better than a D and askto have your remodel certified.

MYTH #2Green is expensive. This is also not true.Data from around the country shows thatto build a certified new home adds 2 per-cent to 3 percent to the cost of a home!Experienced green builders actually

show a reduction in cost overall as theybecome better at building better. Withremodeling you can often see a reductionin project cost! Properly installed insula-tion and air sealing, costs nothing more,but can save energy. A green home needsa smaller heating system, which is lessexpensive, and often no AC is needed,which also saves money. Water-savingshower heads cost the same as regularshower heads and offer the same pleasur-able experience. According to AlureHome Improvements, in East Meadow,NY, dual flush toilets use a fraction of thewater and cost the same to purchase andinstall, saving money on water bills.About 50 percent of your water use isspent on keeping turf grass green whennative grasses don’t need watering andonly occasionally need mowing.

Today, ultra-Low VOC paints are thesame price as regular paint but are muchhealthier for your family, as are No-Added-Urea-Formaldehyde-plywoods.Your biggest expense comes from thethird-party inspections that green remod-eling requires, but the value of having anindependent audit of the performanceand the project seems worth the minimalcost. Also, according to Appliance World,in Huntington, NY, energy efficient appli-ances save on water and energy.

MYTH #3Green is too hard. For you, the home-owner, going green in remodeling is easy.Just tell your remodeler and designer youwant your project to be as green as possi-ble. That is all you have to do. For theremodeler or design professional, there issome work involved. Just like school, thisrequires some training and some prac-tice. Because the secret to green remodel-ing is in the process and NOT the prod-uct, the planning and design stage is veryimportant and takes additional effort tothink things through and consider theimpact of an action.

MYTH #4Green building is for big projects andnew homes. Totally untrue! While LEEDrequires that you practically re-build yourhome, green remodeling projects of allsizes are happening all of the time; bath-room remodels, kitchen remodels, win-

dow and siding replacement, attic orbasement finishing, and of course addi-tions. According to Andersen Windows,which are sold at WindowRama, inEdgewood, NY, just replacing your win-dows can significantly save on energybills, as well.

MYTH #5Green is all about energy. This may be themost commonly misunderstood part ofgreen remodeling. The beauty of green isthat it is a whole-systems way of thinking.It gives equal weight to each key conceptand asks us to consider the interconnect-ed nature of the world we live in.

A systems approach means under-standing that insulating the housereduces air infiltration, which means lessfresh air to the occupant. We understandthe link and the danger in insulatingwithout considering occupant health. Asystems approach has us ask the questionabout how much energy it took to makethe insulation, what were the environ-mental impacts, and what are theimpacts on the installer and the occupantwhen handling this material. In fact,green remodeling really starts with com-munity and the impact on the health andwell being of the people manufacturingthe products, then those installing theproducts—and then those living with theproducts. Community impact and indoorenvironmental quality are the top con-cerns. Next is water, then resource effi-ciency (which includes durability, recy-cling, and embodied energy), and thenfinally energy efficiency. If we reduce the

quality of life of someone in India so thatwe can have cheap slate in our greenhome, we are really taking advantage ofsomeone less fortunate, which is neitherfair nor beneficial to all concerned.

The straight story on green remodelingis that it is easier than you might think. Itcan save you money, it conservesresources, it is healthier for you and yourfamily, and most importantly it is theright thing to do. You have the power withyour next remodel to be a force for goodin the world and your community. Thinkabout how hard you worked to save forthat remodeling project, do you reallywant to buy a ‘D’ grade project when youcan have a ‘B’ or an ‘A’ home with little tono additional expense? New York resi-dents love our areas natural resources andwe value our neighbors. Do your part.

any remodeling project. Floor coveringcan affect your project’s character, dura-bility, and budget.

Choosing flooring for your home does-n’t have to be complicated, but you doneed to do your homework. The entiresquare footage of your home needs to becovered with some type of flooring. Youneed to think about how you want theroom to look, how you are going to usethe space, and how much you want tospend.

BUILDING CHARACTERFloor covering has a major impact on thelook and feel of a room. Patterned carpets are increasingly popu-lar. The patterns are made of cut & looppile. Plush or cut-pile carpet has loopstrimmed off so that yarn ends poke up.While a popular choice, plush carpet does-n't tend to wear as well as berber carpeting.Berber carpet creates a nubby texture withcomplete yarn loops that stand upright.

Wool is a popular carpeting fiber. Ittends to cost more than synthetics, but it'scomfortable, durable, and natural look-ing. Be aware that direct sunlight willfade wool fiber over time.

According to JLC Owner, Joseph Cerbone, the new divi-sion is managed by Ed Drohan, water garden specialist,and Ed has been designing, installing, and maintaining

ponds for 18-plus years. Alter Ecosystems is affiliated withAquascape, Inc. of St. Charles, IL—which is the largest distrib-utor of pond-related equipment in North America.

Furthermore, Ed has been a Certified Aquascape Contractor(CAC) for seven-plus years. Alter Ecosystems works primarilyon the east end of Suffolk, NY, but is no stranger to traveling.

Ed is presently working on a large cleaning of a system he re-designed five years ago. The original construction had onlybeen in the ground for a year or less when Ed was called uponto re-design the entire water garden. Due to the incorrect instal-lation, the system was disassembled and all new componentswere installed to create this jewel of the Hamptons.

The entire re-construction took approximately one monthto complete.

The upper pond is 90' x 65' x 3' and it feeds down a 60' river,connecting to the lower pond, which measures at 95' x 45' x 4'.

The upper pond features an arched bridge, designed andinstalled by a local artist/sculptor.

Both ponds have a gorgeous array of Lilies, Lotus, and Koi fish.
