Club Service:Talk on Diamond Jubilee Celebration and Water Harvesting Rotary Club Udupi Manipal The speaker for the weekly meeting on 9 th July 2019 was our past President Rtn. Amith Arvind sharing his experiences on Diamond jubilee celebrations and then spoke about rain water harvesting which is the need of the hour. Diamond Jubilee Celebrations: Through visual presentation, he showed the journey of making of such a grand event. He recalled the comments made by PRIP Kalyan Banerjee in appreciation of the celebration. Rtn.Bannerjee was astonished looking at the crowd in our Diamond Jubilee event and congratulated on having a record crowd of 500 people. He was also happy visiting the University and Krishna Temple and trying the local cuisine Kadabu. He also asked all to attend the Honolulu convention and gain the knowledge. He congratulated Amit for being president at such young age and wished him a bright Rotary future. Rtn.Amit thanked all the members for their support. Rain water harvesting : Rtn.Amit provided information that of the total water on earth, only 3% constitutes freshwater. Rest is saline water in the oceans. So how do we keep that 3.5% intact ? How do you all deal with the shortage ? Proper planning needs to be there. We can’t depend on the government. As the planning is very poor, disaster management is not there. He addressed that in the recent fire at a work place , even the fire engines didn’t have any water. So where do we stand ? What next for the next generation ? He stressed that the clock is ticking , this year there is shortage of rains too. So its high time we all act. Rain water harvesting is a very easy technique and he explained one such way where you dig a pit. This is a hole dug in the ground, usually filled with gravel or jelly to give it structural strength. A 3 feet dia X 20 feet pit will ‘hold’ around 4000 litres. Thus, water will percolate and increase the water table . Advantage will be to nearby areas too. Thereby, try to conserve the water. Community Service

Invocation at Club Meetings: In most Rotary clubs, it is customary to open weekly meetings with an appropriate invocation or blessing. Usually such invocations are offered without reference to specific religious denominations or faiths. Rotary policy recognizes that throughout the world Rotarians represent many religious beliefs, ideas and creeds . The religious beliefs of each member are fully respected, and nothing in Rotary is intended to prevent any individual from being faithful to such convictions. At international assemblies and conventions, it is traditional for a silent invocation to be given. In respect for all religious beliefs and in the spirit of tolerance for a wide variety of personal faiths, all persons are invited to seek divine guidance and peace “each in his own way.” It is an inspiring experience to join with thousands of Rotarians in an international “silent prayer” or act of personal devotion
