Step into history this Easter Monday and experience the sights and sounds of the capital in 1915.

O’Connell Street will come alive with street theatre, music and vintage attractions as RTÉ recreates the atmosphere of Ireland before the Easter Rising.

The street will be devoted to pedestrians for the day. So, jump on a vintage carousel, hop on board a steam train and feast your eyes on some of the finest motor cars from that time and lots more besides.

Of course, Dublin a century ago was not all frivolity. Near O’Connell Street lay one of the largest slums in Europe, where people lived in unimaginable poverty.

RTÉ Road to the Rising will reflect the lives of all Dubliners – rich and poor and that small, determined group that was plotting rebellion.

Choose from more than 60 talks and exhibitions and be part of live broadcasts throughout the day. Explore all aspects of social, political and cultural life during this period in the company of RTÉ presenters and leading historians.

RTÉ Road to the Rising is a very exciting project that will initiate the countdown to the Centenary of the 1916 Rising. Dublin City Council is proud to work in partnership with RTÉ, An Post and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to deliver this one off event in the historic setting of O’Connell Street. I acknowledge the input of the business sector and

other statutory partners who have worked together to create a wonderful programme for the day. The variety of content is both educational and entertaining and offers a unique opportunity for all to experience elements of early 20th Century Dublin. I invite and encourage everybody who has an interest in this period of our history to join us on O’Connell Street on Easter Monday for what promises to be an enjoyable and memorable family day out, as we look ahead to the Centenary just one year from now.

STeP InTO HISTORYWelcome to O’Connell Street, but not as you know it! Step back in time as the street is pedestrianised for the day. Experience the sights, sounds and people of the capital as they were 100 years ago. Highlights include:

A restored open-front tram, originally built in 1914, will provide a platform for readings and performances on its top deck throughout the day.

Hitch a ride on our vintage carousel! Experience the romance of the Edwardians on this spectacle of regal splendour.

Invoke the glories of the Age of Steam as a life size steam engine makes O’Connell Street its platform for the day, along with a smaller model for children to explore.

Stationed outside the GPO, a Hot Air Balloon will rise 80ft into the air – a spectacle not to be missed. Please note: the hot air balloon is weather dependent.

Actors will be on the street recreating the major milestones of life a century ago. Witness a fully costumed wedding, before journeying through the Capital at War. Massey Bros. will provide all the pomp and ceremony of a period funeral.

Soak up the atmosphere of the day with a seat on our oversized Gramophone – a living, breathing monument to music of the period.

Guided Walking Tours: Departing from the James Larkin statue on O’Connell Street every half hour from 11.30. To see more there’s an illustrated map on P30.

In this production created especially for RTé Road to the Rising, director Louise Lowe and her cast are propelled back to 1915 Dublin, a city gripped by austerity and gearing up for a fight.

The sceneThousands have gone to fight in World War 1. Back home, the Irish Volunteers are drilling in the Phoenix Park. We join the story on a Dublin side street as a young wife searches for her errant husband. Actors include: Shane Whisker and Alanna Nolan

A fantastic array of singers, musicians and bands from around the country are set to take the stage to perform music from the 1915 era. This is not just any old stage, but a beautifully recreated Edwardian music stage. MC Louis Lovett will oversee proceedings, decked out in top hat and tails!

Music acts include The High Kings, The Kilkennys and Beoga, plus performances from singers Jack L, tenor Simon Morgan and soprano Mairead Buicke. Choirs include An Post Men’s Choir, Cór Chúil Aodha (directed by Peadar Ó Riada), the Piccolo Lasso Children’s Choir and The Brook Singers. Completing the line-up are the East Coast Jazz Band, the 4-in-a-Bar barbershop quartet and the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society.

On the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising, Telefís éireann produced a range of programmes about the events of 1916. Among these was ‘Insurrection’, an ambitious and groundbreaking television drama that has been stored in the RTé Archives for the past 50 years.

This eight-part series, broadcast nightly in 1966, told the story of the Rising as it might have unfolded had television existed in 1916. As part of RTé Road to the Rising, a charity screening of the restored series of ‘Insurrection’ will be shown at Liberty Hall Theatre over a single day.

Pearse: Digitally remastered portrait of Patrick Pearse created from the recollections of some of those who knew him including Margaret Pearse, Seán T O’Ceallaigh, Desmond Ryan and Kathleen Clarke. Narrated by Niall Tóibín. Produced by Aindreas Ó Gallchói, the series was broadcast during Easter Week 1966.

A Sovereign People - The Story of the Irish Revolution: The period that followed the death of Parnell was the most exciting, turbulent and innovative in modern Irish history. Intellectual, cultural, political and military activity reached fever pitch. This documentary, produced and directed by Sean Ó Mordha, explores the road to the Easter Rising and the Independent State that emerged in 1922.
